PS3 price cut coming in August?

9 June 2009 23:06 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 23 comments

PS3 price cut coming in August? Sure we have heard rumors that a Sony PlayStation 3 price cut has been in the works for months now, but new "industry sources" are saying today that a $100 USD price cut is coming in August, right alongside the release of the sure-to-be blockbuster Madden NFL 2010.

"Industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (8/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry,"
says Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia.

He also notes that the video game market, despite a recent downturn, is still doing great.

"While software sales for the first half of 2009 are expected to be down mid-single-digits, we believe the second half, in contrast, will likely be up 10 to 15 percent driven by a robust lineup, easier comparisons and potential price cut(s)," he concluded.

The rumor would coincide with recent comments by GameStop CEO Daniel DeMatteo, which says that a price cut is imminent in the Q3 2009.

At this point I don't even bother with price cuts

So does this mean you will be able to buy a PS3 for $300 now? Or is this just going to be a price cut on the most expensive model? I'm really out of the loop with all these different PS3 versions.

Anyways my plan is to buy all the current gen systems when the next gen comes out. The only thing I really miss out on is the multiplayer games, cause nobody's gonna be playing those 4 years from now.

Towards the end of Sept. to mid-Oct. is more likely...no reason to time anything to yet another Madden game.

I also wouldn't be surprised if it was only about a $50 price cut and/or maybe some other deal like 2 controllers, PSN credits, game(s), 160GB HD for the base model, etc.

Anyway, it's getting VERY tiring listening to random 'analysts' saying "A price cut is coming very soon." as though they KNOW something. Then they keep repeating it over and over until it eventually DOES happen...or end up giving about a 6-month range of when it will happen. ANYONE can be THAT accurate. :-) The last 5 or 6 'top analyst' predictions have turned out totally wrong, so I wouldn't really listen to them just because they get paid for whatever it is they actually do.

They have to do something about the price...there are not enough good games to make it worth the price for most people, but for $300 it makes a great bluray player.

You can get a PS3 for $299 ($327) with tax right now. Go to SonyStyle.com and apply for the credit card promotion that they have right now with the $100 rebate. They say it takes about 37 days to get the credit applied. However, I got the credit applied to my creditcard within 3 weeks. The trick is to pay off the full $427 to not get charged any interest on the remaining balance.
    Hope this helps.

Perhaps they'll pull their usual trick.

    There's a new SKU coming, 160gb?

I expect they'll clear stocks of the old one cheaper & move the new SKU to the normal price?

I wonder, does this apply to the slim console as well or not? If so, i hope the 100 dollar rebate works with the Sony credit card as well, then I can save 200 instead of 100.

This $100 credit works with any purchase of $299 or more on SonyStyle.com. You can purchase anything from the site after you receive the credit card. Once you apply, you can call the next day with the auth number and now if you were approved. Then it takes about a week to receive the card.

I was actually in there right now and they changed the promotion to $150 credit. Additionally, you get an "Additional DUALSHOCK®3 controller free with purchase (a $54.99 value" I wish I would have waited just a little bit. I just bought mine about 3 weeks ago.

There's been continuous rumours of a price cut in the last year.

I have no hopes for this price cut and to be honest, I don't care and I don't hope for a price cut.

Sony are going to lose even more money if they get a price cut and great features may be lost if there is a price cut.

I paid $500 for my 60GB console, no complaints here :)

I kinda think it's dumb to wait for price cuts because when a console finally comes to a cheap price, a new better console will be out. I waited a year and they had a price cut which was pretty cool, but I mean the people that wait like 3-5 years for a console just to get it cheaper is pretty dumb, you might as well start a savings account and save up for the next upcoming console in the next few years...

@Morreale: I agree that it's best not to wait too long to buy a console. But with consoles having steep price points this gen compared to previous ones and with today's tough economical times, it's understandable why people wait it out. $300-$400 is well above the historical "sweet spot" of $200 (PS2 and other previous consoles sold heavily at that price point). And no, inflation didn't rise 50% since the PS2 era so that doesn't explain the price jump. Yes I know the 360 Arcade is $200 but the hard drive is very important (greatly reduces risk of disk scratching, running games generates less heat, noise, etc.) Right now the Wii ($250) is the closest to the sweet spot price. Heck, I waited it out quite awhile myself. Only got a Xbox 360 a couple months ago. Would have been wiser to get it soon after the price drop in October (or whenever it was) but I kinda didn't pay attention to the console scene at the time.

But once you wait too long, it can bite you in the ass. I got a PS2 very late into its lifespan (Dec 07) since I kinda stopped caring about console gaming after the PS1 (except for retro gaming on emus). But since PS2 was cheap and the library looked great, thought it was a good. My PS2 basically turned out to be my Xvid/DVD player (though I hear its laser really sucks so I probably shouldn't do that. lol). I rarely played games on it. Not sure why because it's not like I'm a graphics whore. I play on the DS regularly.

Why wait for a mythical price cut?
After using several tips I learned over at cheapassgamer.com in January, I picked up a new 80GB PS3 for $260 from Dell.
You can legitimately obtain a new PS3 for under $300 if you are willing to do a little ground work before and after you purchase.
I am very happy with my PS3, it does much more than just play games.

Why don't they list the final price of the product in the US? I know the sales tax rate varies from state to state but the price paid should be the listed price. That would piss me off when the extra is added at the cash register. What if I only took $299 along - I would be shit out of luck!

I can't imagine a PS3 only costing $50 more than a PSP. Plus, with Sony pricing the PSP Go at $250 I don't think they have a firm grasp of pricing things competitively.

The thing is that everyone in America is aware of this thing called sales tax. If you went into the store expecting to pay $299 you're either a foreigner who has never purchased anything in America except for gas or you're an idiot.

My point is - it should be included in the list price. To say it costs $299, but you end up paying $327, is misleading. I'm sure if you asked most consumers in the US they would prefer the price paid to be the price listed.

You're going to pass up a $150 discount to wait for a $100 price drop? Logic, please?

I paid $300 for my 80GB MGS4 bundle exactly one year ago. Wal-Mart was offering $100 GC with any BR player, and the Sony VISA discount was $100 at the time. $500-$200=$300 (plus tax, but still sweet deal for a year ago or even for today).
