Apple warns of iPhone 3GS overheating issues

4 July 2009 23:37 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 17 comments

Apple warns of iPhone 3GS overheating issues Apple has discretely admitted to iPhone overheating issues today, adding a warning to its support pages acknowledging that some iPhone 3G and 3GS indeed overheat.

The problem seems to stem more from the newly launched 3GS, with tons of reports coming in claiming the overheating occurs in many various environments. Some of the reports, such as those coming into PCWorld, have even said that the back cover of the iPhone has become discolored in under a week due to the heat issues.

Although there has been no official admission of an overheating problem, the warning at least acknowledges that there is a problem. Who does Apple blame however? You, the iPhone 3GS owner.

The warning says that the phone is not meant to function properly if the temperature is above 113 degrees Fahrenheit and tells users to not leave the phones in parked cars.

Says the warning: "If the interior temperature of the device exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature: the device stops charging, display dims, and/or weak cellular signal."

You should probably listen, if you don't want the dreaded Temperature Warning screen:

I was just about to pick up one of these this month. But now, I'm either going to wait for Samsungs Omnia 2/or Lite to come out this year...or maybe I should wait next year for the next iPhone.

It's like a trend with Apple's devices (iPods, iPhones, accessories...) each new device comes plagued with issues. That's why I'm sticking to my good ol' iPod Classic (160GB), AND that's why an iPhone is not on my purchase list anymore...

Wasn't the 160GB classic full of issues and that's why they came out with a 120GB version after it? lol

It did have dozens of problems, but mine doesn't have any of them. That's why I can actually talk about that. Ever since the 30GB iPod Video there hasn't been one decent iPod or Apple gimmick for sale. All of them have problems, usually battery and heating related....

get the hero. much better imo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKTDSfbcbBU&NR=1

probably in most people's opinion once it becomes more known. the specs alone blow the iphone 3gs away. and the sony xperia will blow the hero away once its released.

Those specs look much better than the iPhone 3GS, but personally, I think that all smartphones are just way too thick, that's why I'm putting off buying a smartphone and a laptop till later 2010. I'm wouldn't be surprised if there are more powerful and slimmer smartphones by then.

there is no doubt that they will get faster and smaller. even as soon as holiday season this year the improvements will be pretty drastic.

keep an eye out for sony android powered xperia. its not official yet, but pictures and specs have been leaked. the thing looks pretty amazing

The processor, Cortex-A8 clocked @833MHz might be the issue behind the heat. 833MHz is over kill for a phone any way.
