321 Studios cranks it up a notch

4 October 2002 14:40 by Jari Ketola | 738 comments

321 Studios are about to release a new package for DVD copying. Their first product, DVD Copy Plus was intended for copying DVDs on CDs. They are now about to lauch DVD X Copy, which claims to make bit-to-bit copies of DVDs with a regular recordable DVD-drive.

As we reported in April, 321 Studios asked a San Francisco court to rule on the legitimacy of their product. According to DMCA the package, intended solely for backing up DVDs owned by the consumer, is illegal, because it uses a copyright circumvention algorithm to descramble the CSS encryption used on DVDs. However 321 Studios argue that the DMCA in this case is unconstitutional, because it prevents the fair use of a product. Consumers are allowed to make copies of VHS movies for personal use, but thanks to DMCA, it is impossible to do legally with DVDs.

Major movie studios, as well as the U.S. Department of Justice have asked the Californian court to dismiss the case altogether. Clearly a ruling in the case would have noticeable consequences -- if the software is deemed legal, then DMCA is invalid, and if it's ruled to be illegal, the court, in essence, rules that DMCA takes precedence over the United States constitution.

The case still rises quite a few eyebrows in the AfterDawn staff, as I'm sure it does with among our users. 321 Studios is still, at least to my knowledge, selling software and information found and distributed free of charge on the Internet. And we all know that making identical copies of 9 gigabyte DVDs is impossible with current DVD-recordables. Take a look at our discussion forums to get more insight on the matter of DVD-9 backups.

Since it looks like us pre-orderers are going to get our program this week (hopefully) I have a question for the folks at 321 (or anyone) - What, in their opinion, is the absolute best o/s to be using with dvdxcopy?

321Studios will no longer be replying in this thread.

    Cheers!

p.s. Please join me in thanking Petteri and Jari for all their hard work in setting this up and offering to do so in the first place.

Could anyone tell me how to get a dvd file to fit a regular dvd-r, in laymens terms. I do not quite understand all the compression yet. So if anyone could give me a simple set of instructions after the decryption process it would be very helpful. If it makes a difference I have a hp dvd 200i writer. I tried to use Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0, but I could not get the application to except my drive type. Does anyone have an idea or know what I should do next? Thanks!

No , not much...just sending my reports to bugs@ for now. The blank response was a feeble attempt to get removed from auto updates on this thread, as the dvdxcopy thread has moved.
I will un-check the email box on this reply as well, but probably to no avail....any ideas ?

    <heh-heh-heh> He's got you there, Lawman. <gg>

I still keep the thread checkmarked for updates just in case something tasty comes along. I had been hoping we could crack the 1000+ message barrier by the time we wrapped this thread up, and by god, we came close.

Has anyone tried to "dvdxcopy" Spiderman yet, i have successfully made 2 movies so far (Ocean's 11 and Fast and the Furious) but spiderman is messing up on disk 2, it seems to over lap the director commentary on top of the movie.

    Has anyone had this problem?

    Hi,

Hope this is not too stupid a question. Have been following the whole DVDXCOPY beta thread (and am on the beta list, but unfortunately was unable to receive my DVD burner in time to participate fully).

My question is do those on the beta list qualify for the pre-order download release (the ftp site listed at http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com). I've seen mention of activation codes and am not sure if the registration codes used for beta testing are used here also.

So, guys, if you can set me straight on the above, I'd appreciate it.

Oh, and happy burning! Thanks 321 and afterdawn.

That's a good question; I've been wondering about it too. I *think* we qualify. (Hope so).

We'll maybe have to wait until we (those on the beta list) get a personal email on where to download <the activation code(s)> from. I don't know when the beta-testing will be officially over. Maybe it already is. Regardless, I hope someone will let us know.

Myself, I can't run the Pre-Release post-beta (if I've described it correctly) on my Win98 system, but since I think I heard the activation code(s) would be good for a year, that gives me 12 months for 321 to (hopefully) fix or patch the MS .dll problem which prevents 98-users from running it.

Mike: Activation codes are good forever. They will not expire.

Also, we're unofficially out of beta testing, but have moved right into (smile please) release testing! DOH! I hate it when I say that.

All beta testers will receive their 5 free activation codes early next week.

    Cheers!

That's *wonderful* news! THANK YOU !!

Rob, I'm not the brightest web-surfer on the block, so please, when you're ready to send out the codes, let me (us) know what (main) program we're supposed to download & keep, and where we should get it, to go along with the activation codes.

YeS ! You really *weren't* kidding when you promised that beta testers would never have to pay for dvdxcopy! You can be certain this is going to make the beta testers v-e-r-y happy indeed!

(Truly sorry I wasn't able to constructively contribute to the testing process).

Yeah, "release testing" is a new one on me. (You really like to live life 'on the edge', doncha? <gg>

    Much, *much* obliged !
