University of Florida locks out P2P users

University of Florida has implemented a monitoring system, that blocks users from the Internet if they are running a P2P sofware.

The monitoring sofware called "Integrated Computer Application for Recognizing User Services", or Icarus for short, also scans for security holes and backdoors in the computers, and automatically gives instructions on how to apply appropriate patches or disable offending programs.

Users sharing files will receive an automatic warning via email and pop-up window, and will be blocked from network for thirty minutes. The second violation cuts access for five days. Third-time offenders are subject to the school's judicial process, and will lose their network access indefinitely.

Universities across the US are looking for ways to prevent their students from engaging in illegal affairs, and possibilities for providing the students with legal ways of obtaining music. Florida's approach definitely addresses the first issue, but at the same time it automatically labels all P2P use illegal.

Well, lately I've been remembering an old song which I loved very much when I was just a kid. I just heard the song on the (AM) radio for the first time in years. I was thinking, I'd like to P-to-P this little ditty to my hard-drive, but in the wake of your above announcement, Jari, I'm damned-near paranoid of the RIAA, and even though I'm shuddering in my underwear, I'm still thinking of putting my life-on-the-line, and searching for the song. Since I'm not dialing-in from a university, what do you think my chances of getting caught are? Should I risk it? (It's a really nice song -- long since out of print --). Will I get sued for $600 million dollars or something? Oh my......decisions, decisions....... P.S. (I just got the song). Hi Ghostdog. (Nope), I'm Canadian. Before I listen to the mp3 I downloaded, I always draw the drapes first, turn the lights off, lock all my doors, take the phone off the hook, and make sure that the volume is turned way down. (I wouldn't want the RIAA's thugsters to catch me in the act, you know?) I hope no one 'turns me in' to the authorities. (What's the fine now for listening to an unauthorized mp3 these days? To be honest with you, Ghostdog, I'm not at all sure what ultimate jurisdiction the RIAA has in Canada, but probably more than I realize. I was reading in a Canadian Hi-Fi mag though, that it is legal to make a 1:1 copy of music cds from a Public Lending Library provided they are used strictly for your own personal at-home use. I find it kind of strange that an american organization has jurisdiction ranging across the borders of the US. Wouldn�t exactly surprise me though. Okay, I'm busted. No swithching back. A_Klingon, ever had the opportunity to play with a half track reel to reel (1/4" tape run one direction split to stereo)? It's the format most studio stuff was mastered to before DAT. Not a practical format for home use but WOW, what sound. Not as good as CD audio by the numbers but well, you know what I'm talking about. Analog heaven. No going back... So, I've gotten WAY off topic here... I'm done now. Ok the p2p thing isn't the only way to go, I get all my "ahem" WMAs over the net or ftp. Mp3s are good, but WMAs are less searched for. Shega (adrenaline Is the closest Total freedom) [ + quote]

(well no, not exactly - I never had a half-track tape deck) - my TEAC came with the option to have half-track heads installed, but I opted for the 1/4 track heads because I was ordering-in some of the popular 1/4-track open reel tapes that were being lovingly duplicated by third-party audiophile companies at the time. But I did play back some monaural 7" half-track reels that one of our local University radio stations used in their broadcasts. Yes, the sound was gorgeous. Shegax: WMA's??? (Oh pew!)
