A Scottish man has been jailed for 20 months after a court heard how he turned his family home into a major counterfeiting operation. Ian McNaughton, 44, was copying and selling copyrighted material to pay off some high gambling debts. Copying equipment was apparently found in every single room in McNaughton's house. His 20 month sentence is the longest sentence ever handed down by a Scottish court for counterfeiting.
"These are serious offences at the highest end of the scale. You turned your family home into a factory to produce fake CDs and DVDs for the Christmas market. It was an operation of a significant scale. You had major debts but it was your decision and your responsibility as to what happened within your own home. Even although you owed people a lot of money and were under extreme pressure to repay them, this is a classic case where they cynically use someone to carry out a large scale operation like this with a family home as cover." said Sheriff Alfred Vannet.
McNaughton refused to reveal who he was running the operation for. He pleaded guilty to charges of counterfeiting and breaching the trade marks act during his actions at his home in December 2002 and also admitted breaching copyright laws. "The council welcomes the sentence because of the scale of the crime and the impact it has on the legitimate businesses." Councillor Helen McKenna, convener of North Lanarkshire Council's Protective Services Sub-Committee, said.

@alfie27
Oh...I was calm alfie, until he decided to single me out for my post. He isn't saying anything special anyways.
@mikeh4692
Quote: so as for growing up you can kiss my butt.
Spoken like a true child!
Quote: I do live in the real world
Really? And what world would that be, let me guess, population is 1 right?
Quote: and that world is full off people trying to make a small skin for themselves
Yeah, it is called having a job and making a living off your hardwork and not SELLING other people's work.
Quote: all the guys I know that copy are not terrorists just guys looking to see the newest movies b4 they come to britain and keep their kids off their backs
What in the world does THIS statement have to do with anything? Um, the title of the article was:
Scottish pirate jailed for 20 months
NOT:
Scottish Pirate Jailed for 20 months because he didn't want to wait for the movie to hit dvd!
Dude, you aren't saying ANYTHING that is backing up your statement, so I will close with this. You statement here:
Quote: so as for growing up you can kiss my butt.
Doesn't mean much, considering you are saying nothing relevant anymore. So, if you want to continue this discussion in a civil manner, than do so. And don't take your agressions on what YOU would do and pin them on me!

venom , i dont want to single any one out but you need to realise over here its rampant , the local markets are full of the cinema pirate jobs which are terrible at times ,the thing is people will always buy them because to take their kids to the pictures it will cost them about £35 but to get the pirate dvd will cost them £5 , as for the retail backups , they cost £15 in the shops which is equivlent to $30 in the states , where as the pirate cost £5($10) , there is alot of deprivation here and people do what they can to get their kids good stuff , think about xmas , 10 retail dvds £150( $300) compare that with 10 copy retail dvds £50($100)that means some one on lower income bracket can get almost the same quality dvd for 1/3 of the price .
seems you cant speak the truth without getting shot down , no real discussion then , totally one sided , no body got balls to tell the truth about the whole pirate situation and why it is rampant ,this guy ended up in jail , probably was snitched to the cops by his competition. any way I am off to work ( sellin dvds at the local market ):0p ,only jokin. The sad thing is it wont stop people from doing it,for some of them its a job and they dont claim benifits , then again some of them do.
ee arrr jim lad, pieces of eight , x marks the spot
see ya guys

mikeh4692,
Your opinion does matter, but not when you point out just one person to point at. I am all for a civil discussion as many members on here know. So, in the whole scheme of things, your opinion does matter, because whether it is right/wrong, it is still your opinion.
People do have balls and we are not blind to the fact that this kind of thing goes on. Hell, just look at the articles that are posted, almost on a weekly basis there is some group or individual out there looking to make a profit, or a quick buck.
Although I don't live in the UK, I know several of my friends who DO live there, and I TOTALLY agree with them that the taxation of the prices in the UK is outlandish and ridiculous. Much like the prices in Canada compared to the US. I am not defending the US in any means, but majority of things that are available are here in the US first. I can TOTALLY understand that people don't want to wait for dvd's and movies that come out. There is nothing wrong. But what IS wrong is selling them online, or through some other avenue, because that is what piracy is. I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but a majority of us DO, ahem, "backup" dvd's. So, it is definite knowledge.
The only thing is that, no matter what the situation, there is always a more alternative way in order to fix it, and you shouldn't have to resort to that. I know it is easy. How can it not be, make a dvd, put a label on it, and sell it. It is alot safer to do that, than be a drug dealer, at least you won't be killed for a dvd...at least I hope not.
You DO make a valid point, however, he put his family at a VERY high risk of being labeled as accomplices, and THEY could have gone to jail as well or slapped with a HUGE fine. I know that here in the states, they would have most likely been charged.
So, in conclusion, I just wanted to say, that even though we don't agree and you have your own way of thought and I have mine, people are NOT blind to the fact that it happens. You mentioned Christmas, I can understand that as well, but not to go SO far as to put your family in the light of danger of being a pirate. I can see you d/l'ing a movie and have it for your kids, man, when something is released now, it ONLY takes about 3 hours before it hits a T-site. But this is about a guy who deliberatly tried to MASS produce these things, to settle a gambling debt that HE incurred himself, nobody forced him to gamble.
Also, the UK isn't the worst place for piracy, even though it is a global counterfeit business around the world, China holds the torch in that department.
Here is an interesting article:
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_06/b3919001_mz001.htm
The only reason why I mention this, even though there is much more info besides dvd's, is because I just wanted to show everyone the extent and the global reach of this and everything else.
Anywho, to you all, keep posting your opinions...everyone has a voice to say what they need to say, whether or not someone agrees, just don't single a person out!
Have a good one all and see ya in the forums!
;P

Here Here children no more brngin shit down on the forum is not nice. Everyones bought a copy movie cd etc at some point or taped from the tv or radio, its all theft, borrow a book of someone and read it your taking money from the author its all the same, point being eeryone is guilty of something but we dont all get 20 months for it.If we didnt live in rip off britain im sure people would be glad to purchase everything legite, the whole matter is this we work hard for a pittance in this shit hole they call britain and we pay way to much taxes on everything so theres very little left to purchase luxury goods so when given the choice between paying 20 quid or a fiver for the same product you will pay the lesser amount thats human nature. We can send our troops to fight an illegal war at the cost of billions in pounds not counting the human cost as well but we cant build descent homes for the eldrly, nor hospitals for the sick, you see its kidney machines that pay for rockets and guns so everytime you purchase a dvd a gallon of petrol or a paket of ciggies its another 12 rouns of ammunition to kill or maim some poor sod in some faraway country. At least whe you buy dodgy stuff the money puts clothes on some poor kids back in our country more than i can say for what anything the goverment are doing with there constant drive to push povery the frontline thus lowering wages ad that creates a better inflation which in turn feeds the rich that makes the movies etc etc etc. WHO WILL YOU PUT INTO POWER IN THE NEXT ELECTION.... DOESNT MATTER WHO..... THEY WILL SCREW YOU JUST THE SAME.

LOL, as long as the inspiration doesn't drag you into piracy, as you may end up sharing a cell with Hamish Macdonald in prison here in the UK.
Then we'll all be talking about you in this thread............LOL

I know this man personally, having bee brought up in Glasgow. This is not about a man trying to clear off gambling debts (no doubt he does have some), this is more about one mans greed. This man has for the last 7 years at least had a stall at a very popular and very busy weekend flee market (called the Barras). Over the last few years he has been arrested for piracy having been caught with somewhere in the region of £2 million pounds worth of illegal software. Believe me when i say this is no fly by night operation. Over the years i have seen this man becoming more and more clever, using children as young as 10 as runners, ie people order from a list of available software and DVD etc and the children take the money and bring you back a disk or disks. They have for the last 3 years all been in radio contact with this man Ian. He is even as sophisticated as to use spotters at various positions, watching out for police. He did get caught however and as we all know if you can't do the time - don't do the crime. There was maybe another Mr Big but believe me he wasn't that much bigger in the piracy world as this man. I know for i have used this man over the years for software, software that is by far to expensive to buy retail. Does that make me as guilty - probably.

Well, moog1968
If what you say is indeed true, then yes he got what he deserved for sure, and the fact that he was using children to do his couriering makes me sick.
Dragging children into the crime light like that is unforgiveable, it just goes to show, that these 'big' game pirates are known to the Police, and they are just collating evidence................
You never know moog1968, you may even be starring in one of the Police's star videos of bootlegging on the market stall..................

Well im Ian's daughter and i think use are all out of order writing stuff about my dad on this!! He doesn't deserve it and the rest of my family don't deserve to see it either!! It's not as if any use haven't bought a fake dvd/cd or what ever! And it's not your place to question what kind of dad or husband he is!! He's the best and he done what he could to support his family!! Use know nothing about the situation, all use know is what the papers write! So why are use even wasting your time writing comments in especially when you don't even know him!? And whoever it was that wrote in and said they know my dad, well i can assure you that you've got the wrong person!! And who cares where the work got done.. It's nothing to do with use, it's not your home so stop going on about it!! And whoever it was that said you would have loved to see the house, that is just pathetic!! Millions of people are doing fake dvd's all over the world, just unfortunate that my dad got caught! My dad cares about nothing more than his family and we know that.. So stop going on and saying stuff that seems like he doesn't because it's a lot of rubbish coming from people that don't know the first thing about my family or the whole situation !!

@ yvonnemcn
Your entire post was ignorant and contradictory.
Quote: He doesn't deserve it and the rest of my family don't deserve to see it either!!
He broke the law. He deserves every minute of that 20 months.
Quote: It's not as if any use haven't bought a fake dvd/cd or what ever!
And your point is what? We're not on trial darling. It's your pirate father that's on trial.
Quote: Millions of people are doing fake dvd's all over the world, just unfortunate that my dad got caught!
By that statement you acknowledge what your Dad was doing was wrong so what makes him so special that he doesn't deserve punishment for breaking the law?
Quote: He's the best and he done what he could to support his family!!
By that statement you imply that he couldn't support his family without resorting to piracy. So if in the first place he couldn't support his family where in the hell did he come up with capital to start his pirating venture?
Quote: My dad cares about nothing more than his family
Obviously. That's why you'll be without him for the next 20 months.

Quote: And it's not your place to question what kind of dad or husband he is!!
But, it's OUR place to say what we WANT to say because this is an OPEN forum. It isn't a private thing.
Quote: Millions of people are doing fake dvd's all over the world, just unfortunate that my dad got caught!
Yeah, but millions of people aren't SELLING them like your dad was.
Quote: My dad cares about nothing more than his family and we know that.
So...if your dad was a drug dealer than that would have be ok too/or embezzled money from a company/or robbed people because he didn't want to work. Right?
Well, sorry, don't know what world you live in but the fact is, that you are asking to get caught if you sell them. So, nobody feels for your dad.

yvoonemcn: As I stated above, reality is harsh. Plainly put (and rather harsh I might add)...
Your father ****ed up. One and a half years can do a lot to a man. Don't let him let you down.

Use all talk pish man.. im not asking use to feel sorry for him or any the rest, i dont want use to and neither does he! Im just saying that use don't know the first thing about the situation or my family all use know is what the papers print as iv allready said and they also say a lot of shit!! And he actually doesn't deserve it because even the wardens in the prison have personally said that they think the sentence is far too harsh! And no it wouldn't be ok if he committed any they other crimes mentioned because i don't agree with them... But i don't think piracy is much to worry about! They should be out catching the people who are doing bad to others etc etc!! And fair enough use have your own opinions but how can you judge how a man is with his family if you have never met him!? There was me thinking that would be rather hard! And yes there is millions of people selling them not just buying them!! And yes he does care about nothing more than his family and that is why we'll be without him for 20 months because he was getting money in for the family to live! And another thing hopefully his appeal will go to plan and he'll be out before christmas...Aw i would love to see what use would be saying then!! If you feel so strongly against piracy then why buy the dvds/cds? And lastly my dad will never let me down!!
