Samsung unveils 8GB music smartphone

7 March 2006 15:49 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 31 comments

Samsung unveils 8GB music smartphone South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung has unveiled a new Smartphone that is equipped with an 8GB HDD. The SGH-i310 is advertised as having the ability to store up to 2,000 MP3's (4MB each). Samsung is the first to adopt a hard disk drive into mobile phones and has launched three models equipped with a hard disk drive; the world's first 1.5GB HDD embedded phone (model: SPH-V5400), the world's first 3GB HDD embedded phone (model: SCH-V7900) and the world's first 3GB HDD Music Smartphone (model: SGH-i300).

The i310 comes with the latest version of Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone which allows users to view files and easily carry their music library with them. This Windows Mobile 5.0 enables users to sync the playlists, songs, and videos from their personal PCs so that the experience with the i310 is identical to the users' personal computer. It also offers USB 2.0 and Plug & Play feature which allows the phone to be utilized as a removable hard disk. Businessmen and students can easily store and transfer files to/from their computers in any format conveniently.

The i310 has all the latest features including a 2 megapixel camera with flash, microSD slot, document viewer and TV output. Users can record video with the 2 megapixel camera in high quality resolution. "With the combination of first-class technology and premium design, Samsung has led the industry by offering various features of mobile phones. With great improvements in mobile storage, Samsung will continue to introduce a variety of useful functions for mobile." said Kitae Lee, President of Telecommunication Network Business of Samsung Electronics.

The i310 will be shown to public at CeBIT from March 9th to March 16th. It will be introduced in Europe market during the second half of this year.

It just got approved for sale in the US.

However...while it is a very cool phone, I'm really disappointed that it is not a PPC/Smart phone.

BUT then again I love Nokia phones! Hopefully that's a touch screen on it and not like Blackberry with that dumb wheel. I HATE Blackberries (I was so hoping for them to get shut down!).

    @rosedog

My God!! I just saw the pic of the nokia phone :) man thats just a mini pc... I dont really want that...its too complicated and makes it less user friendly... The phone I'm currently waiting for to hit the Australian Market is the Nokia 6681. Thats a nice lil phone with all the features u would ever need...

    Here is how it looks...

Now thats what i call a simple and user friendly looking phone...

They could add a pair of arms to cellphones to all I care, that would not change the fact that the reception still sucks.

Maybe they should perfect, what they originally intended a phone to be.

Borhan9, I have had that phone for nearly a year.. and it still hasn't hit the Aussie markets yet? Damn, you guys are way behind!

This phone i first saw when i was in india they had it there and it was cheap... but i wasnt really comfortable buyin it there cause theres no real garentee or waranty even if they say international warranty etc...

I can purchase it from the net now but i want to c if it comes out anytime this year at all...

The main reason we are soo behind is cause we still have old phone systems in australia that have not been upgraded in a lot of yrs... so much for being a first world country :)

Ok but I have to say a cam and a flashlight on a phone is essential, they're crazy!

I really don't care for phones like this, but i really think that it should be flash memory instead of a hdd....

if CRapple can make a 4 gig flash device, you surely could double that...

one drop of that thing, there goes your contact lists, mp3's, ect

Any chance it can play XviD or DivX video? Or a codec that could enable playback of MPEG-4 vido. H.264 or X.264 would also be awesome.

Who would want to watch a video on a phone anyways. Its just too small.

It's a cool idea but I don't see why you'd want one. As much crap as cell phones go through it'll be broke in a matter of a month or two and then you'll have to buy a new one. Hell for that I could just buy a p.o.c. phone and get an ipod and come out easier.

Sandisk just announced that they have made an 8gig CF card but the cost right now is, I believe $600.

It cost is expected to drop to $100 in a year.

as far as cost goes, every tech junky can suck it up. as far as abuse goes, only ppl who could take care of thier ppc's and ppl whose parents dont care what they spend on thier irresponsible children will get this. but a hdd phone is a lil crazy seeing as flash memory is growing daily, but what most are neglecting is the insane amount of battery power it will take to spin a hard drive just to play mp3's (a flash ram type cache would be a good idea) and to power a phone. that being said... this phone gave (gives) me a boner!

SQUIZZLE YOUR RIGHT MINI COMPUTERS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HANDS...I HAVE OWNED A MITSUBISHI,MOTOROLA AND SEVERAL MODELS OF NOKIA,HAVE NEVER OWNED A SAMSUNG BUT I THINK I MAY SOON DO SO IF THIS PHONE TECHONOLGY SUCCESSFULLY MAKES ITS IN THE MARKET. EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT A FAN OF MP3'S AN OTHER FEATURES ON MOBILE PHONES WHICH REQUIRES ALOT OF BATTERY POWER CONSUMPTION...MANUFACTERS HAVE TO IMPROVE THE TECHNOLOGY FOR BATTERY LIFE...I STILL WILL BUY A SAMSUNG.
