Alright, so, its official now. We have now removed the last remaining so-called "pop ads" from our site. We did so to our forums few months ago without notifying anyone about it and now the transition is complete for the main site as well. No more annoying pop-unders.
To know the history of our site's advertisement decisions, we need to go back in time. Our site was founded in 1999 and our aim right from the beginning was to keep the site easy to use and friendly for users. Unfortunately, back in 2001 or so, our site was experiencing the aftershock of the dotcom collapse and advertising money spent on banners by big companies simply vanished, almost overnight. As our site was a small entity back (not a company, just an obsession run by seven guys) then, only about half a million page impressions each month and only few thousand registered users, we were struggling to keep the site running -- to even cover the hosting fees. Thus, we, like thousands of other sites -- ranging from goliaths of Net to small hobby sites -- had to adopt the much-hated "popping ad" advertising to our site. However, we wanted to spare our users from the worst and have never actually accepted "pop up" ads, but instead, we always used "pop under" ads -- simply put, ads that (in pre-tabbed browsing world) opened in a separate window, behind the active window. Additionally, we forced our advertisers and ad networks to set the limits so that one user could only be annoyed by one pop-under, not more than that.
Despite our best efforts, pops were always hated -- we didn't really like them either, but hoped that people would understand that advertisements pay for the content, for the servers and for the service users receive from ad-funded sites like ours. But, they were always hated :-) Thus, we have now eliminated them from AfterDawn.com. For good.

There are also referrals in the software section whenever you buy, that could come to a fair amount.

Thank you AD for removing them. Never liked the pop ups and they were some of the hardest to keep from coming up.

Great to hear that the pops are gone :) I personally have bot noticed it because of my firewall blockin everything on websites that are anoying, but i do understand that ads help pay for the sites costs.
But its good to see the improvements of this site still goin.

Thanks to Petteri for all you have done. Yes, I too hated the popunders, but knew how it benefited the site and was tolerant and understanding. I hope that AD can and will survive and flourish in the future. Words cannot express my feelings of gratitude and thanks for all the knowledge I've gained from AD.

I really hated the pop unders as well but I really wouldn't mind them if AD needed the revenue. I'd rather have an AD site with a few pop unders than no AD site at all.

I can deal with popups if it meant keeping afterdawn going. So do what you have to do for funding this great site.
Thanks Afterdawn

Thats impressive, the number of members they have, and the changes they've made to accomodate them. That's great, like the kellogs frosty the tiger, which is actually on cocaine, that's why he's always happy, well, that's pure speculation... lol

Well, of course ads are always hated, but the pop-under wasn't that much of an adherense, moreso of a slight annoyance. I didn't know that aD limited the amount to just one pop-under, if I did, then maybe I would've kept it open. :D
N-e-way, it's cool that you would keep the users happy in exchange for that. That was thoughtful of you guys at aD. Also, do those static ads still count if ads are fully removed, like I have it with the AdblockPlus/Filterset.G combo? I don't even see the top banner link to the home page! ;)

Unfortunately, no. So, if you block the static ads, such as our banners, we wont receive any income from those ads.

As some of you might have realized, we haven't had even a single ad on our site's main front page (same goes for forums' main front page) since late 2002 -- again, to make the site more welcoming to new users and people who prefer to keep our site as their browser's default home page.

I can't believe all the butt-heads that have written in. Not one person has OFFERED TO DONATE ANY MONEY to help this wonderful sight out.
Moderator: Please let me know where I can send a donation in. I'am disabled and live on Social Security, I can't send much, but it's better than the rest of the deadbeats that leach off this wonderful sight for nothing.
Thanks, I just want to do what's right.

Actually, as weird as it might sound, in Finland -- where AfterDawn Ltd is based -- it is illegal for individuals and companies to accept donations. Only organizations that have registered as non-profit are allowed to accept donations and as our website is owned by a for-profit company, donations are out of question.
Therefor, only and best way to help us out is to view pages with ads, buy stuff from companies who advertise on our site -- and of course, to promote our site to other people via word-of-mouth, via your personal homepage, via other discussion forums, etc.

Thanks to all you guys (who most of us don't know or have never heard their mention) who keep this a great site, and I certainly appreciate all the help over the years. If the pop ups are needed, then let them come as we need to show our appreciation for your efforts. I would be first in line for a donation or fee, but understand the legals rammifications. Thanks once again from Stan in the USA !!!!

buckeye, you can edit your posts, maybe you should get to no the site a little better befor posting.(read forum rules)
your thread is off subject.and you posted your e-mail.
Also, Thats my tax dollers your trying to give away,(so dont call us dead beats! (wasent for us and the goverment you would be a bum.) Most normal people have to work for a living.6-7 dollers an hour.
And everyone donates what they know thats what makes this website what it is. this website is teaching and learning
Should of kept the pop-ups then just maybe afterdawn could afford to make some new wallpaper backgrounds.(Im sick of the same old 3)also some afterdawn PSP wallpapers would be nice.
sorry if i sound rude, didnt mean it like that

Like dRD said, if you want to help the site then buy your supplies or other products through the advetising links found here. I've bought media through supermediastore.com to do my part :)
Hey Boss,
If http://newegg.com advertised here we could get a ton of folks to buy through that link.

The number of links that have appeared, particularly in this section, involving newegg is uncountable, they'd make a fortune.

Just to let you know, I allowed Adblock to allow static ads for this site now. Just a minor inconvinience, but well worth keeping this site up. :)
I also didn't know of the links to newegg.com. If I ever shop there, I'll be sure to use the links from here. ;)
