Online pirate sentenced to jail time

20 December 2006 5:40 by Dave "Davedough" Horvath | 81 comments

Online pirate sentenced to jail time United States Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan has released a statement saying the 24 year old defendant Scott R. McCausland, one of three who operated a P2P network known as Elite Torrents has been sentenced to five months jail time and five months house arrest for providing illegal copyrighted material for download.

Part of a government agency sting operation codenamed D-Elite, the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigated and shut down their main website which was found to be a portal for file sharing copyrighted materials. The homepage of Elite Torrents was replaced with a message stating, "This Site Has Been Permanently Shut Down by the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)". Within the first week, more than half a million page hits read that welcome message.

Elite Torrents had been known to be a valuable source of pre-release software, movies and games and was even noted for having the Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith movie some six hours before the first theatrical viewing. Consequently, the file they provided was downloaded over 10,000 times in the next 24 hours. United States District Judge Sean J. McLaughlin did not look upon this lightly and stated that online pirates, "are not modern day Robin Hood’s, but rather common thieves motivated solely by the desire to get something for nothing."

Your spelling is so bad, could you actually spell anything out?? Reading through your world record run-on sentence. What you say is nothing but BS. If you don't like the price. Don't watch, don't buy, don't rent. A lot of things in this world are overpriced. People either buy them or they don't. But you and so many others like you try to come off as THAT's the main reason you p2p. Pleeeeze. Who are you kidding.

I'm not judging. P2P rocks. But enough with the poor me BS.

"ZIppyDSM (AfterDawn Addict) 23 December 2006 cant think for yourself do I have to spell it out for you?
I mean I have to work on spelling and grammar but really paying price of movies and dvds could be balanced out more so they don't make you say WTF,moive prices could be lowered or at least reduce the price enough for snacks and sodas to be 50% less than they are now,if they do that then current DVD prices would be more reasonable at least in the 25 first year or 2 10-15 after that, they don't make back thier money from ticket sales least not most of the time its the DVD that usealy dose it.

As they are DVD's could be reduced by 5-9$ to be between 11-15 instead of 20-30 but there are things they can do but wont do.

As for out of print or hard to find video games/programs/comics can fit in that category try finding a obscure game 3-9 years after its released in some form of like new condition either they want 90$ for it or you get soemthign that might not work for 20$
there are alot of reasons why it would be more profitable to make online communities where you pay a monthly or a small fee per download the corperations however hate this because they would lose some of their monopoly and god forbid they lose any money when they are brining in millions if not billions."

Okay first off what does grammar have to do with anything as long as his point is valid? Which it is and thats his opinion and you have yours. Second you're still not telling me what doesn't make sense so I'm just gonna have to assume you don't know. Third quit looking for faults in my posts and get off my edited by ddp. Fourth dude I'm not looking for a "flame war" so once again quit looking for faults and get off my edited by ddp. Fifth what I said applied to downloading but if you want to make that apply to everything if I keep doing and believing in everything I think is right is that actually caring about what someone else thinks? No because I'm not letting that affect me. Sixth this edited by ddp is done. I can post whatever I want to post unless I'm banned which I'm probably halfway there without having you scavenge what I say looking for something wrong or claiming it doesn't make sense.

I try and not flame..but sometimes the world gets to you....grammar Nazis and people who think "oh you an learn the controls" of a game that should normally learn ok you know I am learning disabled I am either really good or really bad and Halo2 2 controls are not made for south paws sure the analog sticks are swapable but the buttons they do not a move....meaning you can not jump and do other things like a normal "default" player...*sigh*

I am also getting tired of being bitch at that options are not needed in games, button mapping no,sound volume options no its like options are fcking bad thing....

Its all good dude. Yeah I've noticed how people always point out slightly bad spelling to try to gain the "upper hand." But what you type is completely understandable so yeah dude. I can understand if someone doesn't actually get it but thats not the case. Btw pot is what keeps me sane and mellow for the most part. And the legalization of drugs... Theres plenty of states making it so if you carry under an o you're in the clear but they might take your buds and the use of medicinal marijuana which is dank as hell. But national legalization? Probably wont happen for a long time if it even does... They would lose out on a lot of money upon legalization because of the benefits of pot and the usefulness of hemp. If everyone in the world smoked pot and it was growing everywhere and it was legal... The world would be a mellower place ha ha. But yeah I don't mess with crack and I have some friends that do coke more probably more than what they say they do so I know if I touch any of that its pure but I hate the comedowns so yeah. I don't really like edited by ddp like that. Shrooms and buds are pretty much my choice.

you have to remember the balance tho once drugs become legit and are priced to close as what the are prices would coem down importation of illict drugs would fall so would drug crime in the long run you'd probably save more legalizing it and creating more rehab places then mindlessly pouring money into the "war on drugs".

you are right tho much like a fair tax/regulation on personal backing up of "data" it wont happen the corperations wont let it,they make money off legal drugs by creating "fixs" for them and they make money off overcharging on stuff.
its lose lose for the consumer/populace when corperations have to much control.
wgnwheel (Inactive) 23 December 2006 10:01 Send private message to this user
Oh yeah dude trust me I know the benefits of legalizing some drugs and some others should just stay the way they are. Such as coke, smack, and especially meth which have no benefits and would create an even more deranged America but then again if everyone could get their fix legally maybe it wouldn't be a full blown hell. People would just die faster, more car accidents, etc. But yeah with legalization of cannabis people would stop going to prison for petty offenses from a beneficial plant. I don't think importing would stop though if it became legal because it wouldn't be illegal unless they made new customs laws. If they didn't then we could always get some good edited by ddp bud from Holland ha ha. But yeah dude in Cali medicinal is about the same as street price but if it was nationally legalized then you would have state and government tax instead of just state and I doubt it would ever be close to street price but who knows you know? But yeah other than just possesion related charges crime related to drug cartels with pounds of pot would drop and cops would stop having to edited by ddp with pot smokers and actually do something that is contributing to their city or state or whatever.

I dunno coke is not as bad some say the amount/purity and what its cut with dose the most damage same for LSD and other party drugs coke in high ammoutns ya thats pretty bad and the few other drugs that have a insane addictive ratio on them probably best to make them prescribable and if the DR has a few patinas dieing they lose their licence there are ways to balance it out but first and foremost OMG pot should not be illegal WTF do we have viagra giveing old guys hard ons and pot a plant ou can grow int he ground and easily cook/make that has effects eaqul to drinking and smoking combined and its illissisct because pruds cant get the pine out of the their arse ><

anyone who has seen what chemo can do to a person should understand that pot should at the least be made available to them of corse the coperations dont want people living longer if they can make money of pot replacements not to emntion the helthcare system dosent want to keep alive the majority of people that cant afford their canser....ok ok I will stop now >>

    ZIppyDSM,

What is a wold? Did you mean to say popper that's popular among gays? Or pooper? Do you need to take a break?

Oh yeah. One last thing. You must be very careful too. It's dangerous but essential. After heading west for 41 minutes, stop at the yellow sign. Wait there for 12 minutes. Drive another 2 miles and stop again. You'll see a man with one leg in the street. Hand him the brown satchel and tell him "The condor is ready to fly." Good luck.

Bottom line. All this "poor me. we're gonna show em" crap is just that; crap. If only they'd cut the price in half, if only they'd_______fill in the blank.

BS! It's about getting something for free. Nothing wrong with that. It just is what it is.

Congrats, xterra458. I agree that many in the movie industry are way over paid, self serving people. However when a movie is circulated before its release, many jobs of people working pay check to pay check are at risk. McCausland knew the consequences when he put these jobs at risk; I think house arrest is not too harsh. The overpaid actors won't miss the profits, but the guys on a paycheck will. If we don't see or support these movies that will send a message.

ChiefBrdy, Gay??? That's the best you can come up with? You talk a lot of shit for some little geek that hides behind his Walmart bought computer and jacks off to porn all day. Does your mommy know what you do online all day behind closed doors? Maybe you should spend your time doing something a little more worth while then opening up your mouth and bashing Americans!!!
