Nintendo profits get boost from DS

25 January 2007 7:58 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 23 comments

Nintendo profits get boost from DS Nintendo has posted a 40% rise in quarterly profits, driven heavily by strong global sales of the company's handheld DS console. The Japanese game maker also stood by its forecast for record setting annual earnings. The Wii console is still also on track to sell 6 million units by March. The company didn't change its latest net profit forecast of ¥120 billion ($990.5 million) for the year to March.

Nintendo's strategy of attracting women, the elderly and casual gamers with the DS handheld console seems to have worked superbly; helped with successful titles such as Nintendogs and the Brain Training games. The strong figures were expected as Nintendo previously raised its outlook for the year to March three times.

"Numbers were really strong, but there was little surprise after the upward revision the other day," Daiwa Institute of Research analyst Eiji Maeda said. "Going forward, its share price will be susceptible to new software titles for the Wii and foreign exchange fluctuations, both of which could affect full-year results."

Nintendo expects to see the success only continue to grow with considerable demand for the Wii console remaining in all its territories.

Just another bit of proof to show something sony will never learn:

Looks beat performance when your selling to the public!

I mean the nintendo ds lite was such a good product! And the sales were fueled by the amazing advertising this product has!

    Bravo nintendo!

@lecsiy: I think the originality of Nintendo's current consoles (i.e. the DS and the Wii) also has something to do with it. With the touch (DS) and movement (Wii) inputs it opens up the consoles to a much wider audience, the consoles appeal to more people, because touching a screen and moving a controller are easier for "non-gamers" (people who wouldn't normally play games) to use then all the buttons on a "standard" controller.

Anyway, nice to see Nintendo continuing to do well. :)

Well that is nice. I still love my PS3 though. The Wii is probably good but I wouldn't buy one. I have a PSP so i wouldn't buy a DS either. I thinks Nintendo is doing good but I'll stick with Sony.

Anyone know if Nintendo hired an ex-Apple employee or something? Their product design has vastly changed with the Wii and DS Lite. Very elegant compared to pretty much all of their previous products.

I don't see a DS 2 for a loooonnggg time, to much potential left, which is what I like to see.

Even if they do make a "DS 2", it will most likely be called something else. Maybe a quad screen player?

    It all ends here.

I agree. They made their system all white and shiny and slick like apple stuff. Cause regular DS looks like 1988 product while DS lite looks pretty cool.

definitely! design can help a console too. I like the futuristic look nintendo has given to the DS Lite.

I love my daughters DS Lite. It's a fun system to play with if your bored and want to mess around. She's the bigest Nintendo fan of them all. I'm sure she would of had a N64 if she was into games when it was out. I bought her a N64 at Gamestop for $20 used I think, and she plays that thing alot more than her Cube.

Things have changed since she got the Wii. Not she's keeps bugging me wondering when a Pokemon game for Wii will be released!

    Way to go Nintendo!!

DarkMods (Inactive) 29 January 2007 10:03 Send private message to this user

DarkJello (Senior Member) 29 January 2007 10:09 Send private message to this user
I thought the Wii and Wii games were region free?
DarkMods (Inactive) 29 January 2007 10:33 Send private message to this user
they aren't. its just like the ds. u need a japanese Wii to play a Japanese Wii
DarkJello (Senior Member) 29 January 2007 10:37 Send private message to this user
Isn't that putting a region on it...?
utp216 (Inactive) 29 January 2007 10:47 Send private message to this user
I would say that yes, that is a way of them region "coding" the Wii system. Shame though, my daughter would love to play the new Pokemon, even if it is all in Japanese.
