without HDMI is this thing even worth buying.

HDMI is a handy extra connection, nothing more.

Component and VGA can give just as good an image.

Thats not good 92,000 compared to over 10 million console sold is horrible.

who cares at least these were all sold to watch HD0DVD as the ps3 not all were sold to watch blueray most for gaming..

Nonews yet on how many are headed to Aus but the last numbers I could see were 150,000 sold as of the 8th of Jan 2007.

but as of right now every blu laser unit sold has a 'normal' life of approx 3 years.

So perhaps combining a games platform and a movie player into an 'all-in'one' unit isn't such a great idea afterall.

HDMI is important not for its ability to send high def signal, I know Component and VGA are just as good. But in 2009 or whenever HDCP happens I dont think people are gunna be happy about having to buy a new HD-DVD addon just to get high def movies out of their high def discs.

You can get FUll HD 1080p with this. Just buy VGA cable.

Yes most people know you can get full 1080p using this (with VGA or component) but when HDCP kicks in 1080p will only be displayed through HDMI using a TV that is HDCP compatible, if the movie requires HDCP then people without HDMI and an HDCP supported TV then they will receive a downconverted signal. Making it a waste of time to have a HD-DVD player that only outputs at standard DVD quality.

It might happen but then again it might very well not.

In view of the huge already installed user base out there that don't have suitably equipped displays, nevermind such things as the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on, it's quite possible it will never happen.

It's worth remembering that the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on itself is fast becoming a significant segment of the HD-DVD market in its own right.

The movie studios aren't likely to cut themselves off from those profits any time soon.

You have no proof that HDCP is going to be coming along anytime other than a very vague indication that it might come at some point, most likely several years into the future.

.....and having spent only $200US/£130/$249AUS those of us that have bought into the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on will have plenty of HD-DVD movie discs already available
(it has been announced that a total of 600 HD-DVD movies will be out by the end of this year, not one of them with HDCP switched on).

That''s not a lot of money to 'risk' when, no matter what happens, there will always be an excellent HD-DVD movie library out for them.
