still to much money . 300.00 dollars would be ok. plus i would want the dvd player to play both HD and Blu-ray and be able to upconvert regular DVDs to 1080i/1080p

This looks like the European version of the HD-A20 that will be available in the US. The specs are practically identical.

Question; am I hallucinating or did somebody release a hybrid player which plays HD-DVD and blueray? If there is such a thing I'm sure it's pricey. I can't wait til they drop the price. I'm so getting one.

"Pricey" is an understatement. Especially for a Toshiba. I Have learned, through the lack of product support, to stay away from Toshiba unless its absolutely the last alternative. When working, their products are great. As one would expect with use and time, however, breakdowns occur. When that happens, be prepared to throw the unit away and hope that by that time an alternative was developed.

Well that really bites. What's a more reliable brand?

My short answer is, "I don't know." The long answer is that I don't believe one should buy a product just because its made by XYZ. On the other hand, I do belive that one should avoid buying a product from XYZ if their corporate structure results in leaving the customer unhappy. I want good products from good companies and will avoid good products by "bad" companies

Regarding specific models, research reviews to look for product flaws. My opinion of Toshiba is dissatisfaction of their product support which will make me avoid buying them when I can. Don't get me wrong, I love my 3 year old DVD player that they made. But, I have a problem with it and need a ten cent part. Guess what, Toshiba won't sell it to me and Toshiba's own "parts houses" can't identify the part because Toshiba never sent them the specs. Oh, and Toshiba customer service can't (or won't) tell me the specs.

I know its comparing apples and oranges and WAY off point, but take my TV, for example. Lots of people love a variety of brands. Personally, I bought a Mitsubishi big scren back in 1984 and have had it for 23 years. Sure, things went wrong with it but I could always get it repaired at a reasonable price. This year, the repairman again said he could fix it as he had the parts but he said I would be better off taking that money and putting towards a new set. The fact that I was able to get this set serviced for so long a period has left a feeling of good product support by this manufacturer. I did buy a new set and its again a Mitsubishi.

I want to be the one to decide when to repair or replace a product. I don't want a company to tell me when I have to replace their product.

You're absolutely right. It's all about the service. Some people think it's all about the name or a warranty. It's just about good products period. If they made products like they used to , there wouldn't be the need for a warranty.
