LG prices Blu-ray writer/HD DVD reader combo drive

17 March 2007 18:19 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 9 comments

LG prices Blu-ray writer/HD DVD reader combo drive LG Electronics has revealed the price of its new internal disc drive that is capable of reading and rewriting Blu-ray blank media and reading HD DVD-ROM discs. LG already offers a hybrid stand-alone player for both formats, but it lacks support for several aspects of HD-DVD, meaning it carries no HD DVD logo. The GGW-H10N "Super Multi Blue" drive will cost a whopping $1,200 to buy.

It can burn both single layer and dual layer Blu-ray discs, supporting up to 4x write speed for single layer (24 minutes per disc), but drops back to 2x for dual layer. The 4x write speed is welcome, but the market currently only offers consumers single layer Blu-ray media, mostly with 2x write speed support for about $11 to $20 per disc.

The GGW-H10N will also read and write DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW.

Seems that there are serious issue's with this drive. Some say updateing the firmware ( from liteon ) made the problem worse. And some say reverting back to the original FW done the trick. There was some talk of modded firmware on CD freaks that works a charm but I cant find a link. Also it looks like the change from the SHM to the SHW was a ploy to integrate some kind of protection, although liteon are saying its more media friendly, Not.
Maybe these new format players/recorders will work the same way, Mod the firmware and release the real potential of the drive!!

Funny thing you should happen to bring that up in this thread, you would be referring to riplock would you not? My Laptop that I got a few months ago has a 8x DVD drive, that wit riplock cripples it down to 1.8x ever try ripping 7gb at that speed? its not fun. But the funny thing is its an LG drive, I will never be buying anything LG ever just because of this. I will also never buy anything Acer because of all the problems Ive had, Laptop kept getting stuck in hibernation(even when not set to) and freezing I lost alot of data ever few days. Eventually the whole computer crapped out with stuff like internet not working, programs ending unexpectedly etc. The geniuses at Acer completely reinstalled everything claimed they couldnt find any problem and sent it back to me still broken. Somehow the freezing problem solved itself and just when I was getting over all the problems and starting to like (?) my purchase, the backlights now stuffing up randomly. And just to make it worse it was advertised incorrectly where I bought it, so I was paying for a POS computer for way more than it was worth because of missing features.

Now back on topic, I see a big market for these combo drives if the price was right. But that will be the key thing, with a pricetag of $1200 (USD?) I dont see many selling. And the fact that they dont fully support HD-DVD kinda makes them a waste of money.
