Following closely after the release of its firmware update 1.3 in February, a new firmware upgrade, version 1.5 has become available on Toshiba's official support site.
The firmware update is for all of Toshiba's second-generation HD-DVD players and will help fix connectivity and playback issues.
According to the official documentation by Toshiba, "As part of our commitment to provide world-class service to our customers, Toshiba is supplying this firmware update for use by purchasers of Toshiba HD DVD Player models HD-XA2, HD-A20, HD-A2, HD-A2W and HD-D2. This firmware update addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related problems identified by Toshiba."
You can also choose to upgrade directly through the player's ethernet port or you can call Toshiba directly and ask for a firmware CD which they will send free of charge if you are a registered owner of an HD-XA2, HD-A20, HD-A2, HD-A2W or HD-D2.

The report is of a firmware upgrade to 2nd gen machines so why show a picture of the 1st gen HD X1/A1?
Compare the HD X1 to an actual gen 2 machine and you can see how far on they have come......
.....and be reminded of how far almost all of the BD players have to go too.
They're still stuck trying to pull-off (and failing to) a bloated bulk-hiding 2 tone look.
They remind me of the old early VHS video machines.

AH HA! so thats how they are planning to do forced firmware upgrades when too many keys have been recovered from stand alones. no excuses when they will send you a free upgrade cd in the mail. and because of this they wont feel bad or be chastized when new hd-dvds wont play on the old firmware.
what if you are the second hand owner and a firmware updates comes out? you arent registered so no firmware update? sounds pretty lame to me.

georgeluv you should try it when you are denied any firmware upgrades, it sucks.
Basically your machine grows ever more obsolete with every passing day and none of it's (usually easily corrected) niggles ever get sorted.
I for one specifically select my DVD players on the basis that there is this kind of support after manufacture.
The fact that this can be done just opens the door to owners to improve and update their machines - and if you're so paranoid about official firmwares then how about the unoffical ones out there?
