TiVo storage hack emerged

9 May 2007 15:17 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 3 comments

TiVo storage hack emerged It appears that owners of Series3 high-definition TiVos will be able to drive up their storage a bit after a simple hack was revealed over the weekend. Using the method, TiVo users can expand the amount of storage available to the digital video recorder by using an external Serial ATA hard drive. The method allow the use of the SATA pots included with the TiVo hardware.

Normally the devices store an advertised 30 hours of high-definition programming. So far using the method, which includes pressing pause and 62 on the device remote control, is reported to work with hard drives with capacities up to 750GB.

I have a 4-year-old $130 video card that will record on a schedule to my ~1.3TB of HDD. Why would anyone pay a few hundred for a Tivo box + more for the "service" + more to hack it?

The problem I have is finding time to watch any of the stuff I record. I've got a DVD Recorder, a DVR, and one of my computers is set up as a PVR.

Between Lost, Heroes, Entourage, and Sopranos, that is all that I can handle.
