Mario creator says Nintendo is too conscious of competition

Mario creator says Nintendo is too conscious of competition Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the infamous Mario, has warned that Nintendo is paying far too much attention to what the company's rivals are doing. He said that Nintendo needs to focus more on its own offerings and unique strengths. "I do think we are too conscious of competition. There are many companies today that can be compared to Nintendo, but I think that Nintendo should be unique and become a company that can not be compared with the other corporations." he told CNN.
He continued: "Our former president himself has said, 'Do not try to compete with the others, try to be the only one, set yourself apart from others.' We are able to spend as much budget as needed for the challenge of creating something that makes us "the only one. That is why Nintendo puts as much money as possible into such projects and big challenges. Our company thinks that there is never a big enough budget for such challenges"

He referred to the Wii console and the DS handheld console as examples of how Nintendo's innovation can set it aside from competitors. "A new market will open up when you introduce something that people have not expected. I feel strongly that we can have a chance in taking the lead in that market. Nintendo, historically, is a company that takes risks," he said.

Nintendo expects to have sold over 6 million Wii consoles and 23 million DS consoles by the end of its financial year. "I don't think there is a company equivalent that has the know-how or skills with the technology behind the games, or has the history and experience in the entertainment industry, and or has such abundant and motivated staff." he said. "I believe that with our people, we are able to make games that can be accepted by the public for a long time. And as long as we maintain that edge, we will always have an advantage over other companies."

This is why i am a fan of Nintendo's new console it is different and is not the same generic consoles other manufacturers make

Mario is more than Nintendos life, its their bread and butter. People ll over look forward to the next mario game becasue its "assumed" tht it will be a qaulity game. It's like another one of Nintendos flag ship lines, "Zelda".

I'm far from some FaNboi OmGRoKerrs, i play a little of everything, its just stating the obvious.

look you guys are missing the point:
this man Shigeru Miyamoto, "IS" Nintendo, end of story. AFAIK, hes been with this company for almost 30 years or something like that. When the day comes he either dies or retires, its the beginning of the end for nintendo. now, i havent been a big nintendo fan for awhile, but they certainly have their act together, no matter what certain websites would have you believe. They are one of the few companies that still prove it doesnt take $100,000,000,000,0000,000,000,000 dollars to make a successful product. good for them IMO they shouldnt worry about MS and SONY they dont need to as long as this guys running things he certainly knows his stuff

kill Mario!!! What I grew up playing Mario. I still remember being five or six years old pretending to be sick so I wouldnt have to go to school and play Mario. It will be a sad day when that old plumber dies.

I a a fan of video games,Mario is a ok game however I feel Mario since the SNES days and has not been done right Mario sunshine is screwed up the level design is ok but making thos jumping zones part of the main game it threw the whole game off, nintendo really needs to focus even more on gameplay if not they will lil by lil become as bad as the rest well maybe not as bad as sega is now *L*

blah blah blah "we're sooo good we're gonna kick ass" Nintendo is always full of themselves...

Don't be fooled by their bs now, they've had a good early run but then again so did the N64 and that ultimately was surpassed by MILES by the PS1.

And the GameCube was a complete disaster in the 6th Generation Consoles.

I foresee a bad future for Nintendo, Sony will catch up just you wait.

wii is stupid.mario used to be good.not anymore.ps3 will catch up once the pricce goes down :@

I'm surprised that a senior member would say that. Very interesting.
PS3 will catch up, but it will take years for that to happen. Granted, the ps3 system will last 5-10 years. yes, the wii name is something very... different, but as a device, the wii functions as a very nice gaming console.

why are you surprised?i am a playstation person.ever since the beginning of playstation 1.i loved mario games.dont get me wrong i still do.but not the games for gamecube and wii.mario has been over used.its not the same anymore since n64 stopped being made.wii may be a nice console and hey i have not tried it yet, but i can say that the mario character should be thought about carefully among nintendo's creators.playstation 3 is selling low because most people still have their ps2 and the games are still working and they can still play online unlike xbox who's xbox live is done(i heard).plus playstation 3 costs too much so people want to try the wii and i heard great things and im happy nintendo evovled from that crap gamecube.

Sony is full of far worse BS than Nintendo is,however nintendo is sliding into the realm of bland gameplay, since they are not focused on fluff they have a better chance than MS or Sony to get back into gameplay..

You are absolutley right screw the Wii we should all go out and get a PS3 so that we can buy an xbox 360 ported game but pay even more than 360 owners because it Blu-ray and has no online support. Yaaaaaa. Or we could buy a Wii game that is original and doesn't taste like they were more concerned about it looking pretty and giving you a gears of wargasm than actually being fun because hey were only paying $60 bucks for the same piece of shit time and time again. Maybe the nintendo seal of quality doesn't mean anything to you anymore but when I see it I see something that had sweat and blood poured into it and not just another generic fps because now it's getting ridiculious. Maybe you like being fooled with clones but I like to emerse myself in intelligence and challenges in a new way never before possible.

I think what he is saying the 360 and PS3 are over hyped and both are going to share alot of games, while the WII is going to stay somewhat unique.

that is true.but the wii is more aimed at a younger generation of kids rather than xbox and ps3

1922.2.2007 02:13

BIGnewb
yes and no,is more aimed at family's this dose not equal "kids",and if nintendo wanted to keep to kids you would not find alot of teen and mature titles on it.

Nintendo is going for a more general audience while MS and Sony are going for mindless teens with allot of disposable income to buy the shallow game grern.

Not only did he create Mario, he created Zelda and Donkey Kong. If I was a higher up at Nintendo I would definitely consider his words because if you make him think that it is worth it for him to take his creative genius somewhere else, you are in BIG trouble.

Bland as some of the previous Gamecube titles seemed, they were still really fun, and also had some very decent replay value. Twilight Princess looks way more interactive than Wind Waker, but I'm only basing that on the few chances I had playing TP over actually playing and beating WW.

While I admit that the Wii Sports and WiiPlay weren't super fun to me, they were still executed very well, and still had some fun interaction between me and the person I was playing with. That's one of the better things about this console; it's way funner to play with someone else on the same console :D

Aside from that, I've played on 2 of the 3 current gen systems (seen PS3 played but not played myself), but in terms of expectation, the Wii goes slightly beyond what I expected it to be, which is a good thing.

Bland?
Not really more a different level of polish than during the 90's but better than most other games MP2 is unbalanced but still good,Zelda WW was good but missing something,Mario SS was ok but did not flow well, you could say the games have shallow polish on them *L*
Unlike some/most newer titles of the past 2-4 years that are just shallow and rushed.
