God of War III confirmed for 2009 on PS3

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 21 Feb 2009 7:08 User comments (28)

God of War III confirmed for 2009 on PS3 In a press release issued today, Sony has announced that a few key games will be hitting the PlayStation 3 "throughout the year," most notably God of War III and the massive multiplayer shooter MAG.
Although there were no specific release dates given, it is the first confirmation that GOW III will actually make it to gamers' hands in 2009, quelling any rumors that production delays would push the game back to 2010.

Among other anticipated games coming this year are Uncharted 2, Infamous and Heavy Rain.

In the same press release, the company announced a new TV ad for Killzone 2, which it promises was "rendered entirely in-game." The statement added: "We're very proud that our game engine technology has reached the point where we don't have to resort to software pre-rendering."

The company was criticized over the last few years for a Killzone 2 teaser trailer that used pre-rendered action instead of in-game action.

You are condemning a game that isn't even out yet. Give it a chance.

As an "Afterdawn Addict" you should set a better example for us newbies. ;-)

what happened to sony i wuz wondering if they even put up a fight because they are so far behind. even though they are they still can catch up but need more blockbuster title games like in the days of psx/ps2 days but i dont really see it until 2010 at the very least due to the recession and all. . .

622.2.2009 02:34

ZippyDSM, hey they have been developing this game since work was being finalized on GOW2, so this is no quikly deved game this has been in the works longer than killzone 2

Can't wait for inFamous!

I hope that it gets released in the Summer at the latest.

This could be the years sony could take microsoft for a whirl with great titles release like GOW3 but there are certain other things they need to focus on as well to really push the PS3 this year.

1) sony need to focus on making the PS3 as effecient as possible to
get the price lowered. The ps3 has all the next-gen talent nece-
ssary but let's keep it real, sony still need to make the price
of the PS3 comparable to its competition. Lowering the price is a
must and would help to give PS3 some momentum.

2) They still need to work on their online service. I admit i have
not been online with PS3 much but from what i have seen it is
still need some tweaking to be comparable to xbox-live. Yeah i
know its free but still again you got to stay competitive with
your competition. I am not sure but can you talk online as easily
and communicate with friends on PS3 as you can with xbox360? I
love being able to talk to multiple friends at once on xboxlive.

3) Keep the great titles coming. GOW3 if it holds up to its predec-
essors should be one of the elite games for PS3 but the elite line
up needs to continue. Uncharted2 and killzone 2 should help move
some consoles as well. This is all about staying competitive
though. If Xbox release 5 elite games this year then sony should
aim for 8 to 10. This is speaking of console exclusives.

4) I cant count how many xbox360 commercials i have seen this year.
Seeing a ps3 commercial is like finding a needle in a haystack.
When sony does finally get a price drop they need to push it with
advertising.

With the release of great games and the lowering of the PS3 price(the biggest issue stunting the PS3 growth) this could be a stellar year for Sony's PS3 if they take advantage of it.

That's exactly the kind of small minded thinking that I am talking about. You are talking about advertising to a very small audience when you are speaking of newspaper ads with bestbuy papers and is that sony advertising you are speaking of or is that bestbuy advertising??? It is a "BESTBUY" paper.

When you advertise with commercial you get a lot more attention. I see countless TV commercials for specific videogames and then at the end they advertise the xbox360 @ the $199 price. That is advertising. Plus it isnot going to do any good right now. Sony advertising with commercial would be most successful following a price drop making it more comparable to its direct competitors. Why dont they make the PS3 more efficient through the actual parts and manufacturing of units first. Then offer a model without the built in wifi and a harddrive. Dont a lot of people buy their own HD for the PS3 anyway so why would i need to pay sony for one and the wifi could be offered as an optional accessory. If it was as easy to use your own HD for the xbox360 as it is for the PS3 i surely wouldnot have bought a xbox360 with a harddrive. If they produced a PS3 model with optional wifi(ethernet still allows online access) and no HD allowing people to buy their own HD and wifi at their own option they may even be able to produce a base model to match the xbox360 $199 price. They should at least consider a model without a HD if nothing else. I am not saying to stop producing the models with HD and Wifi but offer two models. Then start the advertising with commercials on tv which would reach a lot larger scale audience than a newspaper or some advertising in a magazine. That would really put the heat on Microsoft and help boost the PS3 sales with the great title sony is to release in 2009.

I have heard a price drop is in the works and this summer or upcoming holiday season would be a great stratedy for sony to choose. As soon as sony drops the price i will be getting a PS3. OOppss... and GOW3. LOL

This is impossible. Unike some 360 games, every PS3 game requires HDD.

Sony cannot require the consumer to install a HDD.

I agreed with your first post a bit more. You NEED a HDD for the PS3. You make some good points but you then mention that you do not own a PS3 and your experience with the PSN is limited. The PSN is great and I can't fault it at all as I have had no issues except for scheduled maintainence. I can also say the same for XBL.

I'm glad you are looking into a PS3, and the price drop will be nice if it happens. I honestly think you get what you pay for at this point in time however.

Hopefully I'll see you on the PSN in a few months.

1622.2.2009 19:22

A PS3 Price drop is not happening!

Why do people even bother saying it will/could help.

Sony are bleeding money atm.

The YEN has got rediculusly strong due to the recession.

All profits Sony were making on the PS3 in 08, are gone.

They are making losses everywhere.

They financially can't have a price cut for the PS3, just like they can't price cut for their TV's.

This is because of the strength of the YEN.

I'd also like to point out 'killer' games such as MGS4 were meant to save the PS3, yet it didn't.

'Killer' exclusive games will not solve the PS3's problems, heck it had a pretty decent year of exclusives. Its all about price.

Sony can't compete price wise.

Its a recession, all income elastic goods need price cuts to keep selling.

Consoles are income elastic goods.

Stronger YEN, Recession, better competitors
Bad news for Sony.

RE: lxhotboy's arguments...

1) A BD-ROM drive alone costs $70-100. The only thing I agree with
about price/features is that they didn't need to include WiFi,
but that's probably only costing up to around $20 per unit. PS3
is still selling respectably enough at its existing price and is
now over 21 million (vs 360's 27 million, which also had a year
head start and took longer to reach 20 million units sold than
the PS3 did AND M$ won't divulge if they're including replacement
units due to RROD in their numbers, but most replacements appear
to be refurb'ed, not new, so might not be hiding much units
delivered-wise).

2) I definitely agree that PSN doesn't have quite the offerings as
XBL, but it IS free.

4) I have seen quite a few PS ads on TV the past several months.
Maybe they're just not on the channels you're watching much or
you don't watch enough TV. :-)

It's not small minded at all, especially for those of us using a DVR to BYPASS commercial advertisements altogether!

I have a habit of looking in sales circulars every week to catch what's on sale, and I know I'm not alone in this, which is precisely why said adverts are stuffed in the newspaper for subscribers. They are reaching a customer base just like TV does.

You can choose to do the "DVR" method to the newspaper and chuck the sections you don't want into the trash, it's your choice, but no different than what I do with the TV.

Getting back to the above comment, Sony DOES pay Best Buy for that representation in the ad. Best Buy would obviously bundle the best deal and advertise it, which would not always include a PS3 with a Sony HDTV (why not Samsung for example?) The ad this week was promoting a Sony HDTV, PS3, Guitar Hero, Blu-Ray movies, and miscellaneous Sony products.

If you visit a B&M store, Sony OWNS several endcap displays to which Sony dictates what product is demoed and SOLD there. The shelf and peg hooks sit empty if the product runs out. BB employees cannot replace the empty space with a substitute product or they violate their contract with Sony!

Sony reps sometimes visit the store and verify this display, and sometimes hang around and sell/hype the product alongside the paid BB sales floor. HP, Epson, Intel, AMD, and various other companies do the same as well. DirecTV pays to have an NFL Sunday Ticket ad run simultaneously on ALL the TV's in that department, as well as Hollywood movies such as Hancock, Spider-Man 3, Star Wars and V for Vendetta have all had ads in the same fashion.

Next time you go into BB (if you do, I know, the place is the devil) go into the TV or Digital Camera section. Sony has had an ambiguous display "hiding" in both departments for YEARS. The camera section has a camcorder or camera on display with an LCD screen, and Sony MemorySticks, bags, batteries, blank media, etc. are sold there. The TV section these days shows off a Blu-Ray player attached to a Sony HDTV and surround system, while a 1080p disc showing off Sony tech plays on the equipment.

Sorry this went off topic, but I just wanted to prove that Sony does have advertising muscle. Just look what happened to HD-DVD when they couldn't get shelf space at stores like Target. Their fate was not a coincidence!

2023.2.2009 14:25

imo theres a snowballs chance in hell of MAG coming out this year. More like mid 2010.

2123.2.2009 18:38

I understand that they want to put new games on the newer systems, but unlike Xbox or gamecube, the systems that are out now from those companies are 10 tims better then gamecube/xbox, But ps2 is dif, i dont understand why they dont make games for it like GoWIII, they make sports games for it still. i Dont think alot of people have 400 bucks plus 60 bucks + for the games just to keep up with "the new sequels" to their fav games, they will prob make Kingdom hearts III for ps3 too.

2223.2.2009 18:47

I can't wait for GOW III, its the reason I've been waiting to buy a PS3 and I might wait even a little longer to see if we can get a price drop (or if i get and HDTV =D )

I understand what you are trying to say but my point was that more people watch tv and it is probably the best way to reach people. The majority of people watch tv when compared to looking at Bestbuy ads and they would get more out of tv than those ads you speak of. While you and I both enjoy looking at Bestbuy ads most kids dont pick up the newspaper everyday.

You really did go off topic. I dont know if you were offended or what b/c you started on and on about everyother product sony makes which has nothing to do with the advertising of the PS3 i was discussing. I never said sony didnot have advertising muscle. We are talking about the PS3. Not sony's other line of products. TV commercial can cost a lot more than a newspaper ad. Why??? Fact...b/c the masses watch tv so commercials are a more expensive form or advertising allowing to reach a broader number of people.

Very true. The options for TV are about as broad as newspapers though, considering the amount of networks available these days. Best Buy is most likely in every major newspaper nationwide, each Sunday. That's my only point.

Nope not offended at all. Just showing that Sony is advertising, but still in the "trojan horse" Blu-Ray player fashion for the most part. I do agree there isn't much in the way of PS3 TV ads, not like the "U R NOT "RED"-E" PS2 ads of yesterday.

1) Sony just started making some profit. Price drop will not help. Lots of people are still amazed by the 360 exclusives.

2)I've played Xbox Live and I don't see what the fuss is all about. I play COD4 on it and it's basically playing COD4 on my PS3.
Just my opinion.

3)Exclusives doesn't boost sales up apart from the overrated Halo 3.
Again, my opinion.

4)True.. But I don't think that advertisements would do anything, apart from parents - the ones who know nothing about hardware- who will criticize it because of it's price compared to the 360.

I know the price drop would hurt sony but it would help them move more consols off the shelves. The biggest gripe i hear about PS3 for those that dont have one is the price.

Come on now their are other exclusives that boost sales besides Halo3. Neither console is running away with the majority release of exclusives at the current time as each seems to have a few exclusives to counter the other companies. Ex. Xbox360 releases Gears of War2 and around same time PS3 releases Resistance2. Back in the day PS2 just completely dominated the great exclusives and i do remeber all the URNOTE commercials they had. Those were the days..eeh? But like you said right now advertising willnot help them much at all. Not while one console is so much more expensive than the other.

Seems Sony messed up on their announcement

Quote:
Last week, exciting news broke for PlayStation fans when it appeared both God of War 3 and M.A.G. were confirmed for release before the end of the year. Sadly, we now have some unexciting news to temper those hopes, as it turns out God of War 3 and M.A.G. could potentially sneak into 2010 after all.

The confusion comes in the way Sony worded a press release for Killzone 2 last week. The release boldly stated that Killzone 2 would "usher in an unprecedented year" for the PlayStation 3, and went on to mention God of War 3 and M.A.G. But now Sony says that both games are schedule for release in this fiscal year, which runs into March 2010 (via Shacknews). That's not to say neither game will make it out in 09, but it does open the door to the possibility that we'll have to wait a few months into next year before we see them on store shelves.

Sure, it's potentially a little disappointing, but would that really be the worst situation in the world? If history is any guide, there will probably be too damn many games to play in the holiday season anyway.

Ridiculous but I'm sure that everyone had a little feeling that this was going to happen.
