Dell Streak tablet phone launching this Friday

Dell Streak tablet phone launching this Friday Dell's Streak tablet/phone will hit the U.S. on Friday, says AT&T, launching at $300 with contract or $550 without.
The multi-touch tablet/phone is expected to compete against Apple in both categories, although it only has a 5-inch screen so a direct comparison to the iPad is weak.

AT&T has the device going up for pre-order on Thursday.

The Streak was originally supposed to launch in July, after being unveiled at CES in January, but delays pushed it back to its current date. Between CES and release, Apple has released the iPad and iPhone 4 to record sales numbers.

Dell launched the tablet/phone in the UK in June, to mixed reviews.

Dell says the device will ship with Android 1.6, which is unfortunate, but an upgrade to 2.2 is promised by the end of the year.

Lol.... Why launch this device with only a 5in screen and Droid OS1.6 for $550... when folks can get an iPad for $500? Doesn't seem very smart if they intend to compete with Apple.. I guess we will see!

What? 1.6? That sucks...and promises of Android 2.2 mean nothing...Verizon promised Android 2.2 on the Droid by the end of July.

The screen is nice and all, but clearly Dell has no intention of supporting their product; otherwise it would not have launched with such an ancient OS.

for 599 you could get the iphone 4 16GB without contract and 199 with. to hell with dell i say and i don't even like the iphone.

Contractual agreements? (Actually, it's open-source so shouldn't be)

But any way, what the hell? I was really hoping one company would really rip up Apple in this but never mind, shouldn't have expected much from Dell :/

Lets hope Lenovo or one of the other companies at least release something that kills the iPad (which really shouldn't be liked any way :/)

haha, this is going to be an Epic fail for Dell, its expensive and all the new devices such as Evo 4g, Incredible, Droid x, Droid 2, iphone 4g all under $200, (incredible goes for $179 at 1 point on Amazon) and this P.O.S for $300 W contract with crappy At&T? no thanks Dell

Because Dell is a big, dumb OEM...and this thing has been in a very slow development for over a year. Most android devices are designed, tested, and on the market all in a space of about 3 months...apple takes about 9 months to do the same thing (except they don't do quality testing), and dell takes even longer. Dell management does not understand technology; they only understand profits, losses, costs, and customer opinions that were taken 5 years ago. All they know is that people seem to want this android thing. Because of this, their new superphone will have less than 1/2 the mflops of my old moto droid.
