'Anonymous' to go after Sony

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 05 Apr 2011 12:26 User comments (34)

'Anonymous' to go after Sony The hacking group 'Anonymous' has turned its collective eye on Sony, posting a picture on the AnonOps site.
Anonymous is certainly not happy with the way Sony has treated Geohot and others who have jailbroken their PS3 to run homebrew.

The group started in 2003 via 4chan and recently became a household name after they launched DDoS attacks on MasterCard, Visa, PayPal and Amazon after the companies cut off donations and server space to WikiLeaks following the release of diplomatic cables.

Anonymous claims responsibility, Sony claims 'sporadic maintenance'.....really, you can never do too much "sporadic" maintenance.

We’re aware that some of you have been experiencing intermittent service on PSN today. We’re working on finding a solution, and will report back here as soon as it’s resolved.

Thank you for your patience.

I think that's the idea. Can't get online, can't buy stuff from Sony. So people going to buy another console.

If they been doing this attack in the past, why do they still have internet access?

That's kinda the point. Hit 'em where it hurts, their pockets. If customers can't get on it means they can't buy stuff. It also hits Sonys reputation for providing a service and may turn some people away from using Sonys online service in the future.

Instead of suing Geohot and "going after" people. They should have chilled out and just banned the IP's of PSN's running a hacked PS3 like Microsoft did with hacked X360's and XBL.

Notice Anonymous didn't go after Microsoft and crash Live! Because Microsoft did it in a way that wasn't anti-consumer. You cheat, you're banned. With Sony you cheat, or even look at a video about cheating...you're sued. I swear Sony isn't ran by executives anymore just lawyers.

155.4.2011 13:22

i guess it's just some of the psn that's been cut off because i have been playing all night with no problems? And most of this AM. Although i could not log into the forum. I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy the show, lmao.

My psn network was down the other day but its working again I wish I didn't sell my 360 I got tired of Microsoft and there pay to play service and bans went legit buying games for ps3 supported Sony and for What constant updates for pointless shit just do what micro$ucks did and ban instead of being babies and sueing as long games will still be made people will always want online take your thyme out your asses and see what hackers have to offer as far as homebrews go not all homebrews are made for piracy some are better features that if you weren't being pricks about could use to better your machine Sony u get 2 fingers up at you

I am one of those customers, and I am willing to suffer if it means that someone else is hurting sony...

...and the issues are not fixed; the PSN has been dropping out on me all night.

Sounds like proof of success, at least partial success. At the very least, PSN store sales are taking a big hit!

In other news, they stopped targeting PSN servers because they don't want to hurt the user base...but some of the servers they are still attacking share bandwidth with PSN servers. Also, a couple other groups are now attacking the PSN as well...and they don't take orders from Anonymous. On top of that, a group like Anonymous really has no command chain; just because they officially stop targeting a server, that does not mean that it isn't still being attacked.

You should head over to the irc channel, running updates of what's going on, and you can even join the attacks if you want.

287.4.2011 07:28

Anon can do whatever they want with Sony, just don't tamper with my experience of online play.

Anon is dealing with the problem in a wrong way. Not productive at all. I agree in what they're trying to do but if they want to 'protest' they should do it in a way which won't affect the users of PS3s.

Sony also is going too far with the suing and shit and they're dealing with hackers the wrong way as well.

297.4.2011 09:17

It's called a revolution. Sony wants to be a tyrant and now they are finding out why all tyrants fall. The people will always have more power.

307.4.2011 10:14

weak. Anonymous keep using the same tactic; attacking the sites and servers. Sony is a billion dollar company. using that tactic doesn't even damage Sony. Anonymous is just pissing off the Gamers for the servers downtime. if Anonymous keep shutting down the servers, the Gamers and the Game Community will turn on their ASS. wait until they get caught slipping. the Feds, Sony, and other that they hack will have their penises in Anonymous ASS.

go ahead, the games are all still playable, and the BR. I was able to get on a couple hours later. The PS3 is still pretty awesome.

There seems to be a lot of hate from the everyday users who just want to play online which is understandable.

It's pissing me off.

Sony may take a short term hit from this but in the long run it will have no effect. All it does is piss off the gamers on PSN.
