Sony offering 2 PS3 games as compensation for PSN outage

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 09 May 2011 11:31 User comments (31)

Sony offering 2 PS3 games as compensation for PSN outage Although the company has had to delay the resurrection of the PSN, Sony is looking to make amends to frustrated gamers and will offer up two free PS3 games to everyone affected.
Users will get to choose the games from a small 5-lot of select titles.

For now, it is unclear what those titles will be, however.

Additionally, Sony announced last week that it would be offering everyone a free 30-day trial to the premium PlayStation Plus service.

After first announcing that the service would be up by yesterday, over the weekend Sony confirmed that they would have to delay the return of the service to an unknown time.

Adds Nick Caplin – Head of Communications, SCEE:

Please be assured that we are continuing to work around the clock to have some PlayStation Network and Qriocity services restored and will provide you with specific details shortly.

It does say "PS3 games" not "PSN" games though. What they actually are will be known/confirmed soon enough though.

This could be impressive...

Sony is going above and beyond what they need to do in this situation. I'm sure many will say it's not enough no matter what they offer.

Yes, it is suggested that these will be physical titles not PSN downloads. Let's wait to see the offering...

If it is a game that only plays on the PS3, then it is a PS3 game...it does not matter if it is downloaded or not. They are not going to be giving away physical games...that would cost lots of money.

I'm guessing we are going to get a few of the worst games on the PSN...probably stuff that no one has...because no one wants it. I hope I am wrong about that; I would love to see them put up the 5 biggest selling disk games in PSN form...but I know they won't be sending out disks or coupons for disks; it would cost a fortune and it would be a logistical mess.

Well I just wish they would get the shit back up. It to me has been way toooooo long. Come on NOW!!!!!

By Tuesday going to be online with psn or xbox. I am done with Sony

It would be cool if they offered resident evil 5 gold edition up for free so I wouldn't have to sell/trade my re5 goty edition to get gold edition just to have "move" support/compatibility.

cry baby >_> do something productive and quit complaining. they are doing what they can. and if they are seriously doing this then clearly they are doing everything within their power to keep you here. If this is how your gunna be about it then go to xbox. Your kind isn't wanted or needed.

ANYWAY. I'm hoping these games are good. I will be skimming through the list of PS3 games produced by Sony to pick out plausible games

119.5.2011 23:07

I was wondering if the the PSN is going to be free for a month, and we are going to be able to get two games free, would those games also only be free for the month, or would they be permanent downloads? I've never bought anything from PSN, just downloaded a few of the demos. I just don't want Earthworm Jim as one of the selections.

If it wasn't for the 360 exclusives + better controller I would have sold my 360 already. Never has Microsoft come close to showing this much customer appreciation or any. We have to pay $60+/year just to play online, and there have been many times when live was shut down for the day or half. But any PS3 owners that are whinning need to shut it, you don't have to pay for online and Sony is giving you 2 free games, what more do you want. You can take a break from video games for a few days, get off your fat ass, go outside and get some fresh air.

1310.5.2011 08:17

But when Xbox live goes down it is usually a planed down time for maintenance. I have always got an email or a message on my Xbox live account telling me when, why, and how long the service will be down for. I think the price is reasonable and that $60 I pay every year has helped maintain the servers and keep hackers from getting my personal and credit card information. Do you think Sony is going to spend that much money on fixing things on a free service, I guess not look what happened. They are now fixing the problems with there servers because they want customers back.

1410.5.2011 08:57

I don't mind paying a few bucks a month to keep my information secure and the network running. I know better than to buy anything Sueny.

1510.5.2011 10:24

I want to play Portal2 now not next week and not when they get around to it, man first they check if there are updates and then you cant play because its online content is down.. sad very sad now they are going to offer some game, as said before that no one wanted . I HAVE 9 COUNT THEM PCS RUNNING IN MY HOUSE AND AN XBOX A PS3, PS2 PS1 WII AND THEN WE HEAD BACK TO THE OLDER STUFF... MAN HATE IT WHEN WE GET THE RUN AROUND (maybe Ill just return the ps3 to wali-world and tell them to take it up with sony .. waiting is making it worse) sorry for the rant but some of us bought in to this bs wanting to kill a few hours after a stressful day. All they need to do is move the info to another server with a pass-code check like a dual layer and mount a tracker on the log-in this way when someone loggs in they have a flag on the account like an ip or mac address then those who abuse the terms can be band by machine ...

If the two games are physical, and are at least of average merit, I may consider getting a PS4 after all.

Well I agree that this is not great but in truth I think this is something that will happen more and more with all sorts of online stored data services (itunes, spotify, xbox live) Its the nature of the beast! If sony arnt online yet its cus its not safe so just relax and go out for a drink! Its done when its done!

I dont know why people are saying "oh to my xbox then" ye!? IF IT WORKS! RRD got no such costumer support just xbox expecting there mug customers to sell out for the latest version so just pipe down.

And as for games I expect sony titles such as little big planet, killzone, gran torrismo, heavy rain etc

1913.5.2011 09:37

Better not be new DRAKE - I just pre-ordered!
I doubt it would be tho - that would lose them gajillion$

2013.5.2011 11:30

Part of wants to say, "They are trying to do something nice in light of a bad hand dealt", while on the other side of the coin I want to scream at the top of my lungs, "Don't do a gyotdamn thing!!! Don't sign a gyotdamn thing!!!" In fear that if you take them up on this offer (as an appease to settle the natives) it will have a 'string attached'. The caveat being that accepting the games will be your compliance in no further action against Sony for their involvement (voluntary or involuntary) with the loss of person information with the server breach.

I've seen this f%^k - f^%#k game played before, why would this situation be any different. Especially when the bulk of the information stolen originated with kids, then moved into their parents. It's not conspiracy, its a viable angle worth thinking about before brow beating someone up over what game they hope Sony offers them.

Sony is offering 2 free Games to their Subscribers. I guess that is IF they get PSN back up and running. Fortunately for me when I joined PSN it was free and I never bought anything from them, so they never got my Credit Card Info.

I hope it isn't L.A. Noire. I pre-bought that back in March.
:P

Guys/gals calm down and stop making uneducated guesses, please! The two free games will be downloads, will not be physical discs. It's very simple logic really... PSN is down, not PS3 down.

The two games will be from a selection (as to full disc games vs. PSN games, that's debatable, for example, Warhawk or PJ Shooter 2?). My educated guess is a wide range of PSN game and a few full disc downloadable games (inFamous? Warhawk?)

Now, here's the kick... Sony will be giving out PSN+ too, those don't have PSN+ definitely benefit from this. I'm guessing that for those already have PSN+, their membership will be extended by one month. The kick? Well, the two free games will be tied to the PSN+ subscription. Meaning? As soon as the PSN+ membership is up, the free games expire. SHOCKER!

See, if you're PSN+, the free games for PSN+ members remain free as long as PSN+ subscription is active. Now, for the discounted games (PSN+ members offered discounted PSN games every week/month), say PJ Shooter 2 is $2.99 instead of the $9.99 normal price, if PSN+ member bought the games at the discounted price, the games don't expire (they're still playable even if PSN+ membership expired).

So, do I want the free games? Hell yeah, but not if it's marked for PSN+ users (if it's free for PSN+, then it's more like a lease).

Hey! Don't forget the 2 free PSP games out of a 4-lot that Sony is also offering PSP owners!

So, if you have both, that's twice the freebies! Sweet!

Gnawinvek: Can you imagine the sheer volume of class-action lawsuits when little Jimmy's mom finds out that her son's free compensation games suddenly vanish after a month? No, Sony aren't that stupid...are they? :p

Besides, you're forgetting about games like Stacking and Red Faction: Battlegrounds, which were free on PSN and never expired, so there are exceptions to the rule.

OH AND MY NEIGHBORS 9 yr old KID IS TOTALLY LIVID ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO PLAY ONLINE, HIS DAD CALLS ME FOR THE LATEST DETAILS, AND I TOLD HIM HE WAS GONNA SIT HIS XBOX 360 IN THE CORNER!!! THE awsomelorenzo HAS NO PATIENCE!!

Good point and good info on Stacking and RF:B, thanks! Looks like PSN+ for a month and two free games are pretty good :)
I always thought that free stuff for PSN+ remain free as long as the subscription is active. Well, there are exceptions, so thanks again for pointing that out!

If you downloaded items when they are/were available and keep your PS+ active you will always have them in your already downloaded list and could re-download them if you deleted/removed it/them from your PS3. I say this because items do rotate out/in for PS+ which is why I always download everything all the time (so as to not miss out on anything), as you don't know if it will come back up/available.

Now if you don't keep your PS+ active then they would still be in your completed list and still be downloadable BUT they wouldn't authorize when installed. Now that is only for certain things, not all, because some things will always be yours whether or not you keep PS+ active like themes, avatars, the free games for the inconvenience of PSN being down etc.
