AfterDawn.com has been updated! In addition to renewing the layout of the site we have also speeded up things considerably. The new version has been tested on our Finnish site for several months, and during the testing we have managed to improve the new version even further.

You can now enjoy this new layout at English AfterDawn.com and English Discussion Forums as well! We have also introduced new sections to the site, and re-arranged things a bit.

Other thing I like about MM is you can pick and choose and send to player directly. No syncing.

Easy to use, and does a great job managing my music library. I wanted a simple software which would allow me to set up a party music library, and Media Monkey is simple to use, and does a great job. A must have.

Media Monkey rules, most players can’t handle big libraries and even if they can it takes forever for them to build a library list. I have a MP3/WMA Lossless library of over 300MB’s and all but 60MB’s is low quality MP3’s (ripped at 128 to 192) so there are tens of thousands of songs. Media Monkey had no problem what so ever with this and built a library list within about a half hour. One of the popular players Quintessential took most of the day to build a list.

Not only does it handle big play lists but also has a very good normalizing function so that you don’t have to be blown out of your seat one second and then putting in your hearing aid to hear the next song.

The skins that come with it are very nice but of course you can add to that if you wish.

Another nice feature is that you can add and manage your plugins easily so that you don’t get stuck with a bad plugin or can change on the fly if so deemed.

I’m amazed at how many poor players exist and how few goods ones there are, this player rates 5 out of 5 in my opinion and I’ve played with quite a few.

In my opinion I would classify MediaMonkey as "Freeware" not "Shareware". Yes, there is an upgradeable version to a Gold version that will allow a user to convert from virtually any sound format to mp3 <-- Gold version's best feature (free version will only do that for a 30 day trial - but there's other freeware ways to get around that... see below) The free version also doesn't have "upgrade me" spyware. I believe it's a wonderful program that certainly is a much better alternative to anything that Real Player has put out. Like Real Player this player can create playlists (you can name name them whatever just like Real ... for example my heavy metal playlist is called "Harbinger of Night" - props to MTG: Battlegrounds) With MediaMonkey and the help of some easy to install Winamp and Real Alternative plugins you can play just damn near ANY sound format. You can even play different video format with help from plugins. It also plays video with the help of plugins. Here is a quote from their FAQ on their website:

If MediaMonkey is Freeware then why isn't MP3 encoding unlimited?

The philosophy behind MediaMonkey is to ensure that the Free version has all of the functionality that would be required by the average user (see: <a href="http://www.mediamonkey.com/product.htm" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.mediamonkey.com/product.htm</a> ), and that satisfied users or more advanced users will upgrade to the Gold version that adds more advanced functionality. The one glaring exception to this philosophy is that MP3 encoding expires after 30 days in the free version.

Unfortunately, to legally distribute MP3 encoding functionality, per-user fees must be paid to Thomson for each MP3 encoder shipped, and in the absence of such fees, encoding must be limited to 30 days. In order to ensure MediaMonkey's long term viability, it was necessary to comply with these licensing regulations.

Fortunately, the free LAME MP3 encoder is available in a variety of locations on the internet, and users can switch to the standard version of LAME if they wish to avoid upgrading to the Gold version of MediaMonkey.

If your looking for an iTunes/iPod syncing alternative this is it. MediaMonkey does it all. Syncs to a big library of mp3 players (incl. iPod) has visualazation support. Supports Winamp 2 plugins. Can rip and burn cd's. And retrieve song/artist info and cover art from the amazon.com interface. And one of my favorite featurs it can convert your songs to a lower bitrate while syncing your mp3 player. So you can have all your songs saved as lossless files and then convert them to 128 kbps, 256 kbps, etc while syncing your decive. All in all MediaMonkey is the only piece of software anyone will ever need for their music collection.
