GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities.
It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

This is an Teriffic program that just keeps getting better. I dumped my expensive ones for this program, It was to top heavy for what I did and rea;lly complicated. This one suits me fine. Also with this newest release, you don't need the GTK files. Just download the single file from their home page.

i don't know about the best but it certainly is one of the better ones...and those of you that bitch and complain about this program only do so because you lack the skill needed for this app...SO SHUT UP!

This would seriously have to be one of the most over-rated software applications of modern times. I am well and truely tired of hearing about how "wonderful" gimp (and the ported gimp-shop" is, and how expensive Photshop is...as a graphics and digital arts teacher, I can honestly say that both truely are worth what you pay for them!

i think this is the best grafix app around, its free and its definitely better than most of the shareware alternatives around, it may be coplex for noobs but its worth the time to learn it... i have been using this proram for ages and ages and let me tell you, it doesnt get much better than this

I don't know why everyone isn't using this free program. It is right up there with the best of the big graphic guy's. I found that I have run out of ideas before this thing ran out of possibilities. There are several newer releases that you can find on their site www.gimp.org. There are also tons of free plugins and tutorials around the net. You can find them easily enough with a google search. All in all, this thing is an amazing piece of work.
