French sports groups join class action suit against YouTube

6 June 2007 4:18 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 7 comments

French sports groups join class action suit against YouTube The Federation Francaise de Tennis, the French national tennis organization and Ligue de Football Professionnel, the country's top soccer league, have joined legal action against Google's video sharing giant YouTube. Both joined a class action lawsuit that accuses Google of copyright violations. Bourne, a music publishing company and the English premier league filed the lawsuit last month.

YouTube has claimed that it has protection under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) against being found responsible for the millions of copyrighted clips uploaded by third party users without permission to the service. Viacom sued YouTube for $1 billion back in March. Those in the class action lawsuit want unspecified damages and an injunction forcing YouTube to change its business model.

"We formed a firm conclusion that on Google and YouTube there is rampant copyright infringement," Louis Solomon, one of the attorneys representing the plaintiffs in the suit, said. "We think it's wrong and are eager for a judge to decide the issue." New York-based Cherry Lane Music Publishing also joined the class action lawsuit against YouTube. It owns more than 65,000 copyrights, including the publishing rights to music from Elvis.

I love my football and i do not have cable TV so i find YouTube is the best way to see highlights of the games i have missed. Maybe if Youtube can come up with a deal with the football federation around Europe this will help them out here.

As some content owners are beginning to wake up to the fact that this type of consumer consumption of their products is actually good for them (e.g the news about nbc, cbs) others still reside in the toddler stage of "mine! mine! mine!".

Makes me wonder how many fans of these teams are being punished for their interest in these teams and how many sales of team items to fans may be lost by this childish greed.

ya the industry has been making "profit" off "word of mouth" to long they can not hinder every little thing to a profit setup if they do they will lose everything, look at the music industry its killing CD big box stores and the RIAA is only making things worse by ratching down they've put them selfs in their own coffin.

Other rights holders seem to get it if only in the slightest bit.
