Michael Bay likes Blu-ray better after all

Michael Bay, the director of the blockbuster Transformers, has once again flipped his views on the competing HD formats, commenting to USA Today that he believes Blu-ray is in fact the superior format.

Although Transformers has broken all HD DVD sales records in just over a week, Bay had this to say about Paramount�s decision to go HD DVD exclusive, , �It's short-sighted and it has delayed consumers' moving to HD (home video). As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is. Consumers are smart, and they are going to wait it out.�

Bay had originally made such comments, including this quote he made immediately after Paramount�s decision. �I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having two formats. No Transformers 2 for me.� A few days after his rant however, he changed his mind and instead praised the pricing of HD DVD�s hardware and said that he would come back for Transformers 2.

No matter what Bay thinks, and whether he�s back for the second installment of the blockbuster film or not, the movie will live on in HD DVD and the format war will continue on with no end in sight.

I fully agree with that statement. With people jumping from both ships (and joining the other one) it makes a statement I said a while ago more and more realistic everyday: No one will win for the masses are hooked on DVD. Even if the format war does come to a close, with a winner, I wouldn't hesitate to say that another format will come along very quickly afterwards and wipe the floor with both HD DVD and Blu-Ray. I am sure you guys (and gals) have seen the threads and news articles out there about formats that store many times (even into the Terabytes) more data on a DVD sized disk and reads the media with red lasers. With technology like this you get extremely massive storage along with greatly reduced development, production and probably even distribution costs because the system uses already existing technology and takes it to the next level. The masses are starting to grasp High Definition and once they do (and see the amazing quality compared to SD) then a little while later they might start wanting HD quality movies but until that day comes the war will never end. Between the constant side-switches and nit picky fights between HD DVD and Blu-Ray backers the war won't end. Once again, I will stand by my position, until the public becomes more educated regarding HD and until a unified standard is brought to the table the "adverage" consumer will just stick to vanilla DVD; as a result the "format war" will never end. Why does he feel its a superior format, as the only difference is storage size and more DRM on Blu-Ray? WHAT IS HIS REASON WHY BLU-RAY IS SUPERIOR, HAS HE EVEN DISCUSSED THIS? As i said in another post, its a battle between the main pro DRM MPAA lobby (sony, disney and fox) who want the extra DRM that is anti-consumer BD+ of blu-ray, and the rest. because the main studios will never shift their position and release films on both formats which would give the consumer a choice there is a media frenzy and neither format will benefit as ppl will just stick to their dvd's as who wants to own another minidisc obsolete format! the one good thing about the fake war is that it will drive down prices, but its hard for studios to global price fix when there are two formats in competition! all films should be on both formats and let the ppl decide what they want! If they want to see if one side is dominating, then the studios should release one or more blockbusters on BOTH formats and see which one sells more. [ + quote]

Stuff HD,I'm with all the consumers out there who think this war is a farce and the upgrade to all this HD lark is just a BS plan to extract more revenue for the same old grainy film. I'm sticking with my crusty SD TV which isn't costing me any extra cash and getting cheap DVD's and good old Sky+ SD. I'm putting my cash to other fun uses until my TV finaly dies which probably won't be for another few years. [ + quote]
