IBM wants to put commercials during your DVDs

27 November 2007 18:27 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 113 comments

IBM wants to put commercials during your DVDs IBM has patented a new concept that will place commercials during the movie you are watching on your legally purchased or rented DVD.

The scheme, which is a terrible abuse of consumers, will allow purchasers to either purchase or rent the movie at the current standard rate with commercial interruption or pay extra money to have it commercial-free.

When the new DVDs are inserted, the DVD player will automatically check to see what type of disc you are inserting and if it is the commercial-infused version, it " will either play embedded ads on the disc over the course of the movie, or connect to the internet to download new ads to embed in real-time into the film."

If the patent is granted, one of only two situations is possible. Either the consumer will see the movie industry as even greedier than they are and sales will fall. There is the possibility however that the consumers will not mind so much and the movie industry will get added revenue from the ads.

What do you think?

This would only, aside from really pissing off consumers, add a whole new wave of piracy that they're fighting to stop. Even if none of the studios go with it, I can't believe IBM wasted a single man-hour on this project.

dvds are expensive enough as it is. and IBM wants people to pay even more for commercial-free movies??? thats just ridiculous. now i wouldn't mind watching the commercials if the movies were free.

Given enough time, this is enevitable. Dont know how many of you have seen the (mediocre) movie "idiocracy" but that where we are heading.
I have a friend in the states who records shows we dont get here in nz and sends them over from time to time, the amount of adds you guys have grown used to is unbearable even with the ability to fast foward them.

Just put yourself in the place of the artists. DaVinci would just love to have a Pepsi or Viagra painted in his masterpieces. The Last supper will have various products at the table. Judas will wear a T-shirt of the most popular team. They are doing this already. Notice the Visa and other products that the actors are using and blatantly flashing across the screen.

The artists will wake up and do their own distribution. This is already happening in the music business. We will pay the artist directly for his/her work. What a great partnership!

Give them just about 2-3 hours after the "IBM" movies are released and they will be ripped sans commercials with the Cracker's Logo at the beginning of the movie. I am not inventing or condoning any of this on either side. They will get what they ask for.

My Prediction: Yes, there will be two tiers: one in which those that "buy" into their business model and the other where we partner and respect the artists. Movies and other productions will be produced using the new model of cooperative genius among all artists, actors, singers, writers all sharing in the joy of unfettered creativity and well deserved wealth.
We should welcome this as as new era. The present powers that be will be powerless, the path is their their own choice into oblivion.

No wonder Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs are being pushed...With a whole lotta adverts being inserted at the start of every chapter, there just ain't gonna be enough space on a standard DVD, is there?

I can see it now, all movies will be a 3-disc set. Disc 1 is the main movie + adverts. Disc 2 is special features + adverts. Disc 3 is just adverts.

Look on the bright side, we can now watch all of your favorite adverts in superior resolution! And in the case of re-mastered movies, the adverts will look even better than the actual movie!

Woohee! Lol...

With the high cost we pay to buy their products, I reckon they should be paying us to watch their crappy commercials, not IBM.

Industry execs better plan on "renting" those commercial-infested discs to me for A LOT less than Wal-Mart's $3.00-$5.00 price for B-grade movies.....because that's what a movie with commercials IS. The only ones who will endorse this are the same idiots who've since forgotten they endorsed divx "rentals" Perhaps IBM is merely banking on the greed & deterioration of the media industry and is getting a patent in place to have a stake in future strangle-hold they [media industry] will surely attempt.

Pretty soon they will be recording what channels we are all watching and when the mute button is pressed etc. The whole point behind a movie is so you can enjoy a show with out being bothered by all the stupid CHUCK'N commercials that are on regular television. I have not but a CD player for my new car yet and listening to the radio sucks they play more commercials than they do music.
Have you ever tried listening to public or college radio? Depending on where you live, those alternatives can sometimes be quite good.

I have read most of the comments concerning this "advertisement" on DvDs and have to agree on not liking this idea at all. We are lambasted with commercials on cable, radio, tv, and every other medium of entertainment. Now they want us as consumers to pay to watch more commercials? I think if it was up to 'the consumer' with a vote (like we are going to get that), I'm sure it would be unanimously - NO. I for one am having to mute the TV, turn the car radio off, watch as many commercial free movies on cable as possible, so I DO NOT WANT AND WILL NOT PAY FOR ANY DVD THAT IS COMMERCIALIZED. Do you think we as Americans could ever join together and NOT purchase this insane proposal of more commercials? I would like to be the first one at the polls. Count me in.

By the way, isn't part of IBM owned by the Chinese?

Bad idea!

Just extra work to make your backup without the commercials.

OTOH, great opportunity to hone one's skills in handling the more sophisticated options in the editing and backup software.

That's the last time I went to a commercial movie theater. If DVD's started coming with compulsory commercials and I had to pay a extortion fee to avoid them, I would stop renting DVD's.

Simple as that, Big Blueski!
What a whiner! Just stop watching movies now. I can't believe you stop going to theaters because there are ads before. Just show up @#$ late if it bothers you. In fact I'm glad you aren't there, cause you are probably one of the A holes who talk, use cell phones, and basically ruin it for everyone else.

I just have to flame this kind of crap. This DVD idea is just stupid, but pre-film ads are a non-issue.

Next there will be "AdDVD's" released for purchase. With such famous actor's coming out with "Hi, my name is David Hasselhoff, did you miss my No.1 advert last Christmas? Well, don't dispair, because you can now own it on DVD. For only $39.99...Blah, Blah, Blah!"
Crazy is as Crazy does! Its a joke and should be seen as one.

Actually, I own that DVD. I got it at Wal-Mart. I only paid $39.92 for it though.

The morons coming up with these ideas need to be drug out into the street and shot to death with a rubber band gun. This would almost be as torturous as watching a DVD you PAID for that had commercials in it!

See, I can come up with ridiculous ideas too!

This is ridiculous.
In my town(not in the US), some buses used to play movies in tv. I think it was great. Then some newer buses had a very freaking idea of setting up ad screens that play the same commercials everyday. It is ok the first few days but if you ride the buses everyday YOU WOULD WANT A GUN so you could shoot the screen down.
As if the daily traffic isn't enough for commuters, they have to make it even worse with this kind of shit.
Anyway, that's a different story but I think it's the same kind of abuse. I wonder if us consumers have a law to protect us from this kind of shet.

There is a serious greedy f*ckhead proposing this on IBM's behalf. Are they blind? the more they want to suck money out of us, the more piracy will develop.

I won't watch any of those f*cked up movies with commercials in them. I'd just make use of my copying abilities and voilá. If only the other industries realize that advertising that much is a waste of time , energy and money, they wouldn't put a crappy add in our very expensive DVD's.

I for one, never watch adds. I record every tv show I like in my Panasonic DVD recorder's hard drive and never whatch de adds. I "save" 16 minutes for every show skipping adds. Just like tivo, but free.

Again, f*ck adDVD's, like DiVX, this is dead from birth.

I agree, if they think that piracy is bad now, just wait! If they do actually do this I will start buying the commercialed movies, ripping them, editing out the commercials and giving away thousands of copies just in protest!!!

Come take me away, I will plea insanity! Driven there by the insane ideas these money grubbing idiots come up with. No jury of my peers in their right minds would ever convict! My peers are the sane members of AfterDawn.com!!! We know what's right! Except for that one idiot who is going to post something in opposition to what I just said (you know who you are).

Like I said earlier, I can come up with ridiculous ideas too!

Now if they did this in order to LOWER the price of the retail movies for the consumer, I might think this wasn't so bad, but you know that will NEVER happen in a million years. "Greed of money is the root of all evil"

As I have said countless times, when will these jack asses learn? No matter what "copy protection" they come up with someone cracks it. nothing is full proof. do they not realize that no matter how many millions they spend on trying to copy protect shit, someone cracks it, and the the crackers don't charge to crack it. Instead of throwing away millions on "copy protection", why don't they feed the homeless, or spend it on medical insurance for those of us who don't have it? Even better, bribe the politicians to stop accepting "campaign contributions" and get this country back to where it needs to be, the land of the free, not the land of capitalism.

You've gotta admit the dopes who create the DRM make a good living. Besides, how do you know that one of them isn't a leaker? Wouldn't that be too juicy a bit of irony?

Or make films worth buying with dvd content worth buying!

It would be interesting if some bright critter in the ad industry starts putting out Snark Ads to get folk to pay attention to the commercials? That's one way to sell a product and get the ad itself viral.
borhan9 (AfterDawn Addict) 20 December 2007 18:50 Send private message to this user
This is crap idea by IBM they should realize that people choose to watch DVD's because they are ad free and if the do this it will make it even greater abuse to copying the DVD's because then we will copy and remove the ads.
