CES 2008: Blu-ray titles to include PSP version of video

10 January 2008 1:29 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 11 comments

CES 2008: Blu-ray titles to include PSP version of video At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Sony demonstrated an upcoming addition to Blu-ray titles; lower-resolution versions of the video content. Using a PlayStation 3 (PS3) consoles, which can read BD-ROM discs, and a PlayStation Portable (PSP) console with a MemoryStick Duo for storage, Sony inserted a Blu-ray title into a PS3 and produced a video compatible with the PSP.

The PlayStation 3 did not encode the video however, the copy for the PSP system is permanently stored on the Blu-ray title itself, with no expiration date and at apparently no extra cost. "There was always the promise of greater inactivity," said David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

The new feature is not yet part of the company's release schedule, but Bishop said he expected to see Sony Pictures rolling it out this year. Not many details were given on whether the video content could be transfered to portable devices other than a PSP.

Support on the PSP is significant enough on its own however, as it seems Sony may be cleverly replacing its UMD format (at least for movies) with Blu-ray discs that instead contain a copy of the movie for the Memory Stick.

    Sony connects to Sony...
    Sony connects to Sony...
    Sony CONNECTS TO SONY...

Hmm it's an interesting development, but since you can't copy the video onto the PSP, then what's the fkn point?

Your gonna sit in your lounge watching a Blu-Ray movie on your PSP instead of your TV directly in front of you? Lol... gee that's just ingenious Sony!

    Current Specs:
    Intel82801BA Mobo, Intel D 945G @3.4Ghz, 2x2Mb L2 Cache, 1Gb DDR2 SD RAM @677Mhz, 250Gb WD Caviar @10,000Rpm, GeForce7600GT 512MB GDDR2, ASUSTek Tiger Digital/Analog TV Tuner, Samsung SyncMaster941BW 19" LCD

So is this to make up for all the money lost on those UMD disks?

um you can copy the video onto the psp thats the whole point. Each blu ray movie will have a psp encoded version of it on the disk and you just select copy to psp on the ps3 and it copies it to the psp. Sony said the videos would be around 1gb each

Here's a bold idea, Sony. Make the Blue-Ray movies cheaper. That would sell more discs. I don't need any more proprietary crap from you. Betamax, Gigapocket, DRM restrictions....

but its far cheaper and you wind up with better quality if you rip it yourself to put it on higher spec non sony products.

pirates? i dunno what you mean =p ^_^

i think it's a decent idea i just can't see the 222 MhZ a PSP is capable of boosting out would manage to run a full on Blu-Ray Disc!
even overclocked to 333Mhz it'll still be far from performing Blu-Ray.. the concept isn't that bad...

whoever said "we're gonna sit there and watch the film on the psp instead of the TV infront of us" that's just stupid, it's put on the memory stick so that you can take it around.. use your head ¬_¬

maybe the Slim & Lite's might be able to run the Blu-Ray discs, but they have no compatibility with homebrew!... arrgh
