Sony has no plans for larger HDD PS3 in UK

29 January 2008 17:15 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 6 comments

Sony has no plans for larger HDD PS3 in UK Sony Europe has told GI.biz that they have no plans to introduce a 120GB or 160GB model of the PlayStation 3 in the UK.

An internal Best Buy memo showed that supply of the 80GB model was being cut and since then rumors have exploded across the internet that the US will see a 120GB version for the same price as the disappearing 80GB. Sony has yet to confirm or deny the rumors however.

In the UK though, the story is different. "We do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK," added a spokesperson for Sony Europe.

The rumors are not all that far fetched as in the past Sony has implied that it would consider PS3 models with larger hard drives if consumers demanded it.

Geez is this the only way the console makes it into the news? Every other week it seems there is a rumor of cutting this model or adding X gb hard drive...first it was the backwards compatibility now the re(re)structuring how much hard drive space you get. What is the deal? Can't a company decide on a business model and stick with it? I understand the desire to upgrade and make your product better, but c'mon! Things like this didn't happen with last gen consoles, not to this extent. I plan(ed?) to purchase one sometime in the next year, and all this uncertainty pisses me off. Without sites like this and Joystiq I could never keep up on Sony's constant changes. Can someone send me a brochure that explains all this garbage? Though M$ did add HDMI and a larger hd with the Elite and introduce the Arcade version, that's about 134,575,226,575,265,774 less changes than Sony. Wait more to come! 'Assemble your own blu-ray drive and get a 1 terabyte drive at no cost!' I can see it now

Both the 360 and PS3 have been playing the mult-sku game. Honestly, HDD space differences are okay, but adding/removing features is a bit much in this short amount of time. And honestly, who cares about HDD space on the PS3 anyways? You can self-upgrade the PS3 with almost any drive size you want, right?

who cares when u can already add ur own hardrive to it and as of now theres no reason to worry how big the hardrive is til theres some emulators or something for it so dont think anyone cares really how big the harddrives are.....

Please tell me the cost of the 120 gig seagate drive then tell me the price of the current 80gig drive, lets hope sony are not using this as a way to justify a huge price hike and are honest to their customers and keep the price virtually the same as it costs sony less than $5 difference to source any of these drives and retail for next to nothing.

if they go ahead with canning with B/C i seriously wouldn't bother if you have any ps2 games, i would pick up a 2nd hand 60gig verstion and replace the drive myself. backwards compatibility(B/C), which as pcworld stated, is a software trice and adds little to no extra cost to the ps3 so there is no reason not to support it in all ps3's.

Maybe they'll even offer a system update to buyers of the existing 40GB model that up-flashes their systems.

You know PS2 compatibility is just a software trick in the 80GB model, right?

I wonder if this has anything to do with the white ps3 that there was a news article about last week (or was it the week before?). Any ways, it is rumored that these new ps3s will have the dual shock 3 packaged with them and lots of games like resistance, ratchet, and uncharted will release downloadable patches that will add the rumble feature into the games.

edit: just read the other article that also mentions the rumor about the dual shock three with the new system.
