Xbox Live Gamerscore cheaters targeted

26 March 2008 3:23 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 23 comments

Xbox Live Gamerscore cheaters targeted Administrators of Microsoft's Xbox Live online gaming community have cracked down on those who are found to be tampering with their Xbox Live Gamerscore. "Today we took action on some of the accounts we have identified as the most serious offenders who have violated the Xbox Live Terms of Use by tampering with their Gamerscore and achievements." administrator Major Nelson wrote in a post on Tuesday.

Those who were caught suffered a variety of punishments, such as having their Gamerscore reset to zero, all registered achievements canceled and some had their accounts labeled as cheaters on the Xbox Live service and Xbox.com. The response from Xbox Live users has been mostly positive. Back in October, Nelson had warned against the cheating activity.

"I strongly urge you not to tamper with your Gamerscore and achievements. If you do decide to employ some nefarious techniques to artificially increase your Gamerscore or obtain achievements by manipulating the Xbox software without playing the game, bad things will happen," a post read at the time.

you serious? does anyone really care ? if somone needs to look "badass" becaue he dominates games even if its not true, then let them. I dont really see this as something important.

If they mean by this using glitches in games then good for them, They deserve to lose their points.. I have to work 4 times as hard in call of duty 3 on xbox live cause people that suck at the game want to cheat...

This is the one thing that really aggravates me about Xbox 360. I could care less about Gamer Scores and Achievements. There are alot of games I play that I may finish the campaign, but don't have the time, energy or desire to unlock 100% of the game. Because of the stupid way the Gamer Score system is setup, I am a "cheater" and punished if I use someone else's game save to unlock the rest of the content.

For instance, TimeSplitters 3 on Xbox 1 had 40-50 unlockable characters for multiplayer, plus unlockable boards, etc. Some of the requirements to unlock the extras were insane. That's great for gamers who want that challenge, but personally, I just want the ability to play as the dinosaur when I play against my friends. So I would download a game save that has everything unlocked and now I can mow down my buddies as a dinosaur.

If I couldn't use the game save, I doubt I would play the game anymore. So, is it a crime that I want to be the dinosaur?

Of course people care!!! It's part of the whole "experience" and makes the entire "interactive gaming experience" more engaging. Falsely representing is just a start to the cheating as a whole and dumbs down the Xbox Live fun. That's like saying "who cares about scoring". Cheating to simply to win, and make themselves feel better (GOD only knows why) displays the simpleton dummies from those with integrity and intelligence. Cheating to win money is a horse of another color all-in-all. Misrepresentation and cheating is a sign of classlessness and lack of respect and they should be electrocuted!

    @SProdigy

So if you're that type of player then you prolly dont care about how high your score is b/c you dont care about the "challenge" rigt? So whats the biggie to you anyways if your score gets reset?

Plus that comment was kinda dumb. If that was the case The term noobie would pretty much be non-existant. I personally like having the edge on people in COD 4 b/c of what i've unlocked.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha.

This is funny microsoft thinks they can track cheaters. But what they don't understand is gaming glitches which happen with there consoles are allowing users to use mod chips to minipulate there gamer scores there are even patches for the games that allow instant and easy acheivements and some of these patches are not detectable by there new anti cheat system which sucks i would rather play a game for real then need to cheat.

And worse if they are going after cheaters then they need to go after users who are jumping up to areas in levels in online games like halo 3 where you are not suppose to be this is why i stopped playing halo 3 because cheaters would hide out in areas using cheats and sniper the heck out of everyone including there own team members.

Maybe Bill Gates should spend some resources and fix the only problem he and Microsoft should be concerned over....

The Xbox 360 and the ridiculous "Red Ring of Death". I'm on my third system in less than a year (and that's not even the worst I have heard about).

Who gives a rat's a** if some kids Gamerscore is tampered with????

The gamerscore is ridiculous to begin with. I just want to play games. Sure there are challenges, but trying to knock 100 heads off of zombies in 2 minutes is just repetitive for little reward. PGR3 and 4 are perfect examples of repetitiveness.

Games that use a system like COD4 have sensible rewards, and yes, gamers should be rewarded that way.

Why don't they bind the gamesave to your gamertag? If you load a save from another gamertag, IT SHOULDN'T AFFECT YOUR GAMERSCORE. One less way to cheat the system for those that care about it in the first place.

Doesn't that make sense? Instead, we are in the dark ages, where I can't trade games and saves with friends, or bring over a memory card from another system, without fear of being labeled a cheater.

I'm just looking at it from the old Goldeneye/Perfect Dark memory card days, where you could load anyone's game save to play with all the characters and boards, but you could use your individual profile to keep track of statistics. How could a 10 year old N64 game get it right, but today's 360 games don't? (Pretty much makes a Pro Action Replay device useless, don't it?)

And you're right, I don't care about the gamerscore. Why should you? I like achievements, but the score is arbitrary. I get 5-10 points just hitting the start button in the Simpsons game. Yippee. I can also abuse other kiddie fare, like TMNT and jack up my score. Wonderful.

I hope Sony cracks down on this as well, it is very obvious who is cheating just by looking at the scoreboards. They would just need to have one person scan the scoreboards and ban all the major cheaters once and a while, its not as huge a task as it seems.

Lol me and my friends were just talking about this and one of them was complaining about how Achievements take away from the actual game and turn everything into a competition... That isn't fun...

I think your gamer score just shows how much time you waste playing games for stupid points. The less, the better :)

I can see it now in a new upgrade, a message flashes on screen...

Your console will now self destruct in 5 seconds for cheating...
    5...
    4...
    3...
    2...
    1...
a nice puff of smoke from your $300 dollar console....

I can see Billy sitting in the corner giggling to himself on how he just figured out how to make another billion!

how do you even cheat with ur gamerscore on xbox? and how does msoft know you cheated to get a high gamescore?

once can only assume someone got all of them in one day as opposed to weeks.

i played through Eternal Sonata and only got 120 points. i have to play it again to get the remaining to get the full 1000.

    ugh.

    Blah, whatever.

I've played 360 WAY more then my PS3 so I think I can make a fair judgement. I constantly go to my friends house and he's always playing 360 and he goes diehard over these points. Like right now in rainbow he's using all of these random guns that he's crap with just so he can get the 100 kill achievements. I think you should play a game because you like it, not for numbers. In total he's rented 49 games over the past 6 months and half of those were crappy old ones that had easy achievements. Sure its fun to get them sometimes but when your wasting money on games you never plan to play again for them I think it's pointless.

BTW, PS3 is getting this lame point system soon enough with Home so technically I'm bashing that too. "Accomplishments" lol

this suouldnt happen. gamer score should be non- existant. Games should have there own challenges to complete, that is like just in the game and have nothing to do with live or psn. like cod4 that has its own challenges. sony wouldnt ban u off psn if u downloaded a save file to get to 10th prestige would they? and niether would I.W.
MS need to get themselves a reality check and start improving crappy vista before fiddling with this crap. I am a ps3 guy

    Summary:

    Xbox Live is broken....

This cheating is the RROD of the online service. All of the BS achievements and scams to get you to pay for an online service that STILL craps out despite its funding (Christmas anyone??)... I mean thanks for Undertow... I preferred Bioshock as the end-all underwater fps but I'll gladly trade a months worth of online time for a shitty title I wasn't going to purchase anyway [/sarcasm]. Microsoft will eventually need to spend some serious $$ to accurately combat this cheating.

.. maybe they will just continue to overprice thier accessories to death to compensate i.e. 100$ for a wi-fi adapter??????!!!???
