According to figures released by Enterbrain, during March, Nintendo's Wii games console outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3), while the PlayStation Portable (PSP) outsold the DS handheld for the first time in six months. Nintendo managed to move 265,542 Wii units in the five weeks to March 30th, while Sony sold 81,579 units of the PS3.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 console has struggled to gain any momentum in its life so far in Japan. During March, the Xbox 360 sold a weak 13,127 units, keeping it far behind its rivals in the home-console market. As for handhelds, Sony considerably beat Nintendo during March, selling 415,415 PSP units compared to 255,124 NDS units.
The strong sales for the PSP in March reflect the chart-topping performance of Capcom Co Ltd's Monster Hunter Freedom 2G. After a very weak first year, the PlayStation 3 (PS3) has come back swinging since late 2007 following price drops, improved games line-up and possibly the victory of the Blu-ray disc format in the next generation DVD format war.

I wasn't going to post but I just have to. For M$ to sell less than 15,000 consoles in a month is to funny! I mean I knew it was unpopular, but damn, it's just sad.

It is sad but gamers in japan are not interrested in war games and blood and guts they like rpg's and adventure titles not the garbage microsoft is pushing on them. and nintendo understands this this is why the wii is doing good.

they love us (people from the usa) but hate our products.
at least that's the way i see it.
you see every other car on the road here is japanese,
but the detroit auto makers can't sell a thing over there.
honestly, i'm pretty sure it's just because of the outrageous import fees
placed on american cars by the japanese government, so it's not the same thing.

The PSP has come a long way since 2005. 360's performance in Japan is absolutely embarassing. I'm starting to think Japan is just a waste of time of resources to Microsoft and maybe they should just consider giving up in the region.

Just like any other country...
Japan is also very keen on domestic products.
In Germany everyone drives German cars.
In Korea everyone buys Samsung and Lg.
In Japan everyone buys PS3s, Wiis, Toyota and vending machine pantsu.
When I visited Germany, Toyota was literally giving away Scion TCs at extreme low low low prices since sales on Toyotas are so low.
But this sort of attitude you don't see in America as much anymore unless you go out to the rural areas.
-------
Just like the poster above me. The gaming community in Japan is a bit different from USA gamers. A buddy of mine meantion this that many American children grow up watching too much violence on TV shows and movies which is why many American children enjoy warfare games. Theres more to it but I don't feel like writing an essay.
