Apple unveiled the first beta of the next version of the iPhone and iPod Touch OS. It's currently available to registered developers, and scheduled to be released to consumers this summer.
"The new iPhone OS 3.0 is a major software release packed with incredible new features and innovations for iPhone customers and developers alike. It will keep us years ahead of the competition,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
In addition to the Copy and Paste feature mentioned recently by Digg’s Kevin Rose , new features will include expanded search capabilities, landscape view for Mail, Text, and Notes, and Bluetooth networking capabilities.
As with version 2 of the OS, version 3 will be a free upgrade for iPhone owners but cost $9.95 to upgrade an iPod Touch.
If the server problems last year, when the new iPhone and OS were released, and the year before, when the iPhone debuted, are any indication, it's probably a good idea not to plan on updating for at least a day or two.

I never knew this. Its hardly fair that you spend an epic amount buying an iPod touch (not as much as an iPhone but still) and then are forced to pay to update. Imagine the uproar if Microsoft charged you every time you updated your computer or for the new Xbox experience thing. I personally own a PS3 and would take it to the dump if they thought they could charge for something that should come as part of the product.
oh wait this is APPLE......

Keith.... M$ is doing exactly the same thing. you go to you local Best buy and say to the salesman: " I want to upgrade my Xp to Vista" He sais: "Ok, but it'll cost you 150$ btw"
So both companies are run by capitalist rats like Jobs and Gates who just care about theur pay check.

Well, I have to disagree with you on that one, because Vista is a completely different system. You don't really need the upgrade and considering that your computer had XP in the first place, it isn't really part of the package. New OSes need to make money simple as that. Microsoft isn't doing that in terms of software because it gives Service Packs. Remember XP SP2. They pretty much gave you windows 5.2 for free right there.
I do have to say Gates and Jobs are plenty greedy, but for the most part I'd say Apple is lot more overpriced in terms of quality. It's almost the same thing with a couple of lights and interface changes that Mac fanboys will applaud no matter how useless it is. Look at Coverflow in Safari 4 Beta...

MS giving you SP2 or Sp3 is same as Apple giving you OS 2.1 or 2.2, OS2.0 and OS 3.0 are like XP and Vista totally different OSs so charging 10 instead of 150+ seems like a good deal to me. I own a iPhone so my upgrade will be free but if I had a Touch I would evaluate the new features and then decide if I want to update, Apple isnt forcing you to buy it you only have to purchase it if you want the new features.

The charge doesn't actually matter all its doing is encouraging piracy people will think its unfair and have a look at pirate things to find you can already download the beta.
and I assume it will be easy to install and sort out. Once people are on the first rung of the whole piracy ladder it escalates from there.

This is all well and good however what is soo good about this phone when the blutooth does not work over cross OS Platforms. Until they fix the blutooth issue the phone will never be one that i will purchase.

I tried to get this, but it's $100 to become a developer besides just getting the sdk. It's also a bit late Apple to be giving us these features now, especially making us wait until the summer for them. Better sooner than never I suppose. We should get paid some kind of compensation lol.
