Wii, PS3 price cuts coming in Q3, says GameStop

23 May 2009 1:13 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 12 comments

Wii, PS3 price cuts coming in Q3, says GameStop According to major US retailer GameStop CEO Daniel DeMatteo, price cuts for the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 will be coming in the Q3.

DeMatteo added that the company is forecasting 33.5 million hardware units sold at that point and is factoring in price cuts.

"That assumes that there will be price cuts on the PS3 and potentially one on the Wii," said DeMatteo, adding however that "it’s hard to tell if we actually need a price cut on the Wii to get to our numbers. There are some price cuts built into that assumption, but not until the third quarter."

DeMatteo also says that the current price of the consoles is too high given the global economic recession.

"The hardware price points, given this economic environment are potentially too high, and if the platform holders are going to make the numbers that they forecasted for the year, those prices would have to change.

"Also, if you think about it, these hardware prices have stayed up longer in this cycle than in any other time before, and in a very dire economic environment, those two things seem to be mutually exclusive.

"Put all those things together, I think that there will have to be price cuts in order to get the hardware moving to where it needs to be,"
he concluded.

The Wii needs more than a price cut to go beyond where it is now.

i think the main problem for the wii is not to sell more consoles, but to keep the buyers interest in the console. for example, better games, more downloadable content, firmware updates, ect.

I completely agree. I finally have a Wii due to their extremely limited supply. 6 months later? Still playing Mario Kart and Wii Fit. While they're good games everything else is just sooooo gimmicky. The only ray of hope I see coming is the house of the Dead....gotta get it.

The Wii needs better games. I could very well see how one would want to trade this console in for the ps3 or xbox 360. My 11 yr old had the opt to get the Wii or Xbox 360 and after playing the Wii at his cousins house...he said it was too girlyish so he chose the xbox 360 which I lucked up and got for a mere $160 off ebay.

Nintendo would lose money if the Wii was sold at $100-150. Razor and Blades is not Nintendo's style. A price cut to $200 or a bit less should be doable though. The price cut should have come awhile ago.

As for PS3, SONY should concentrate on making a profit off their PS3. It's too late to catch up to the console war race now. Besides, you could even argue that Nintendo was the real winner last gen because the Gamecube was actually profitable for Nintendo whereas the Xbox and PS2 I believe weren't.

As for games, it's a myth that the Wii doesn't have enough good games. Unless you equate good with stunning graphics. There are enough quality titles for the Wii that will occupy your time. The 360 has the largest number of quality titles (by metascore standards at least) and more quality titles gives you more options so that's why I went with that but if you own a Wii you are not exactly screwed. You just have less options but the library is sufficient enough to occupy your gaming time.

there was an article here a while ago about the wii costing $140 to make, if sony is selling the PS3 at a loss, and still doing good i can see ninentdo selling it for 150 or 160

Unfortunately the WII dose lack a good range of solid "normal" games.

And that's the problem "good enough" is not worth my time or money WII,PS3 easybreak oven they all are filled with consumer wank like movies are filled with IE games poorly developed and left unfinished so they can rush out the next title..

Smells like EA, makes me want to cry... Their games are just so sad and disgusting it's evil. Like, holy crap. God Father II? WTF! How could you sell that unfinished garbage for $60? I almost bought that too, cause I liked the first God Father game and it was good. But this just let me down. Only EA game I own is Rock Band but the people at Harmonix are good people.
