Sony to re-release God of War games on one Blu-ray Disc

Sony has announced they will be releasing a two-in-one game for the first time on the PlayStation 3, re-releasing the blockbuster hits God of War and God of War 2 on one Blu-ray Disc
The PS3 team, in a not-so-subtle knock at its rivals, says it would not be possible for the Wii or Xbox 360 to place two complex, HD games like the God of War series on one disc, as they use the lower capacity DVD standard while PS3 games use BD. Dual layer DVDs can hold 8.5GB while a dual-layer Blu-ray disc can hold 50GB.

The GOW1/2 combo will be the first of a few other combo releases coming soon, adds Sony.

“There are gamers who are still holding onto their PS2s, and we are currently evaluating these catalog titles and seeing which ones we can move over to PS3 like we are doing with God of War,”
added Kim Nguyen, marketing manager for PS3. “It’s a very unique competitive advantage that we have with Blu-ray Disc. [Others] are limited by the capacity of DVDs.”

The combo game will retail for $39.99 USD.

Yay :)

Sweet!

Although many will still hold onto their PS2, this seems like a good move for the PS3.

35.9.2009 21:12

Thats Great i Played 2 at a friends and liked it also have the PSP one but i do not own a PS2 it got stolen when we moved 7 years ago and my PS3 doesn't have b/c so hurray

45.9.2009 22:25

Are the games going to be graphically redone as well similarly to how the twin snakes was done for the game cube?

55.9.2009 22:54

It's gonna include full Trophy support and 720p resolution

66.9.2009 03:39

Remake: FF7 and the first 3 MGS. That would be awesome.

They may not have updated textures, though, but should still look a lot better than the originals on a PS2 or PS3 w/ PS2-compatibility.

No surprises there Oner.

I mentioned GOW 1&2 coming out as a disc for PS3 @ $ 40.
On topic.

The main text specifically mentions PS3 Blu-ray v Xbox DVD disc capacity and I commented (briefly) on that.
On topic.

So the 'off topic' claim is actually incorrect which makes me wonder just what is it you're worried about?

If they know people are holding on to their PS2's, why get rid of bc then? Nevermind, buy the same game twice. Duh.

136.9.2009 12:19

Yeh has no one else thought that for $40 you could buy 4/5 good ps2 games?

I just don't see why they don't create a better BC for it then theres no need to rebuy games, that would make alot more people happy I think.

146.9.2009 14:48

Jake_C

They want to resell everything they can.

PS3 backwards compatability is not coming back, ever.
The tops guys at Sony have said so publicly.

There is also an aspect ratio problem, a lot of PS2 games are in 4:3 and not 16:9/16:10.

Expect PSN to fill up selling mildly reworked old PS2 games, the fig-leaf will be an occasion inclusion of 1 or 2 previous games in a special latest version PS3 game release as seen here.

156.9.2009 15:16

im happy abotu this. my PS2 stopped working and i pirated the 2 GoW games.

now i can play them in 720p with AA aswell and pay the devs their deserved's worth :)

By your own admission you briefly touched upon the subject, but the majority of your post was about Xbox accessories, Xbox data compression, Xbox Hard Drive space, Xbox 360 Arcade models/games & etc. about XBOX, was just far too much. As I said ~ If you would like to have a more in depth conversation about OTHER items/consoles you are more than welcome to visit/post in our console forums. Thank You.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Sony's research found that more people would like the console to cost less than have PS2 backward compatibility. Some people are gonna find something to bitch about no matter WHAT they do.

And by "more people," I mean the people that really wanted the backward compatibility were only in the 15-20% range... 80-85% of potential buyers being willing to buy a system at a lower cost beats out only 15-20% of potential buyers being turned off by no PS2 compatibility.

IF you have it already then why complain? this is for others who dont have it and want to play it.

and no one is forcing you to buy it.

great so when your kids, dog or whatever damages your disc you lose 2 games and not just 1.

wouldn't it be a better move to release a new title & not just rehash old games seems sony are continually stating that people don't want to play old games, gamers want the next new experience.

isn't this their reason for removing backwards compatibility?

have sony reached a new low in contempt for their loyal fans by reselling titles that they own for their PS2 for the PS3 as a way to move to the newer console. do sony really think people are stupid with very, very deep pockets!

PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility is "not coming back," ever

Says Koller: "It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table...It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," he says. "We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They've buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies."

i'm guessing sony PR dropped a clanger somewhere. old games are ok when sony can get you to purchase them all over again but not when talking about backwards compatibility.

207.9.2009 03:50

I have no problem with it as long as they use GOW 3's engine and textures for the games, other wise its.... tits on a zombie sure their fun to look at....... er...sorry Vamprie:TM:BLoodlines has been begging me to come play with it again ><

What I am getting at is it a Capcom style rehash port or are they going to put some work into it?
=============
Interestx its a none issue mate as Grears of war 1 and 2 can be put on the same disc and installed to the HDD for full use, or in this case I guess Halo 1 and Halo 2 running the Halo 3 engine and textures...speaking of which oh MS theirs you an idea!!

My point is the 3 or 4 things the 360 can not do in comparison to the PS3 is not that important to gaming or design.

Hey oner if this takes things out of line to much go ahead and edit it all you need to, but tell DDP he might have to do a article on rule changes, like the staff is tighting up on comments and such, I mean if you guys really need to get us all in line it would not hurt to to start reminding us of it and all.

This is awesome news and I'm definitely picking this up: both God of War games (which I love on PS2) on one BD, remastered in HD and with trophy support. What more could I ask for?

Also, I see the article mentions more such combos are on the way! I wonder what other games we'll get remastered for HD and with trophy support ... any ideas?

I just hope they are quality ports and not slapped together crap like we see daily in DLC.... I mean I approve of re selling overhauled updates to games and all but it'd be nice if they did it better than DLC.....

I was pretty excited to hear this news. I already had the two GOW games on PS2 but never could get around to playing them. I sold them on Ebay and will be gladly buying this copy on one disc will updated graphics and 720p resolution. Trophy support gives me a bigger incentive to actually play through and finish the games too.

do you know that you can pick up copies of God o War & God o War2 at car boot sales around the UK for £0.50p each? have you looked at how much these trade for at game even!

Do you not think, seems these are ps2 titles that have already recouped the development costs & many other costs several times over that releasing them for $20 a piece ($40 for the two), the same price as dedicated ps3 platinum titles they are a little over priced?

Do you not think that charging $5 per title is more appropriate seems PS3 users do not want to play PS2 titles, as most of the PS3 fans on AD have already stated that backwards compatibility is pointless due to the games being "old"!

and they are a broad demographic data catchment

re-releasing old games after the rhetoric surrounding backwards compatibility, and then charging an extortionate price for them must upset even you Oner?

It doesn't upset me since I think the price for 2 great games with Trophies & ported (not upscaled) graphics @ $40 is not so bad and is not at all "an extortionate price". $50 would have been an issue but $30 would have been perfect, imho. Then again my personal view on the cost of things is different from someone else, since what I make and spend my own money on is personal to me. Either way I look at it like this, those who want it will buy it, those who don't agree with it won't. I personally won't...maybe borrow or rent it (for the trophies) but not buy it because I have 2 PS3's that have BC as well as 2 PS2's to choose from if I REALLY wanted to play them.

As for the backwards compatibility issue, I have said it before

Quote:
If people wanted BC & OtherOS/Linux capabilities they should have purchased one that had those features in it. But to complain about it now when the PS3 Slim is cheaper with less features then they only have themselves to blame....You can't please everyone. They want a lower price, they get it and complain about not enough choices...they say it has too many features, they get them removed and they continue to complain more...they don't think BC is needed...only to complain later that it's wanted...oh well like I said ~ Those who complain have only themselves to blame.

I see it as a good thing since publishers tend to forget their back catalog but I'd like to see some polish and added value to the whole thing.

I would not mind seeing a new game get re released as a "whole" or finished project after 6-12 months of its release, you know drive sales as much as you can with the 60$ game then come out with a fixed version for 30-40 it sucks but its better than DLC......

277.9.2009 13:09

they shoudl have done this with killzone 1 IMO :)

i cant wait for this, hopefully its £30, as £15 for both games seems very good, esp with 720p res and trophy support.

<3 <3 <3

If you dont like it, dont buy it. simple. i dont see why people dont bitch about xbox 360 selling old games via xbox Live.

Oh Zippy...don't get me started on DLC and how there are certain titles that are nothing more than DLC content but labeled as a full game with a full price tag! Now THAT is "extortion".

Even worse when the game has clear flaws that need to be adressed but are over looked for DLC SW:unleashed,FO3,Bioshock, my god its endless.... you know I will pay 10$ for the flaws to be fixed.... or a wide and varied cheat system so I can enjoy SP.....

307.9.2009 14:40

This is a nice way to compensate for the lack of backwards compatibility. Other game combos that should be ported to the PS3 with updated graphics and features include the Gran Turismo series, Tekken 4/5, Metal Gear Solid 2/3, Resident Evil CVX/4 (updated controls on RECVX), Devil May Cry 1-3, Mortal Kombat PS2 series, and Tomb Raider Anniversary/Legend. Playing those games with 1080p graphics would be like visual sex.

3111.9.2009 13:35

Personally, I'm looking forward to picking this one up. I have both games on the ps2, but will gladly buy this 2 pack for my ps3 and would also like to see them do the same for the Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Devil May Cry series. If they do, I'll buy 'em for sure. -Rick

yes but unlike you im 17 and didnt have $600 to blow on a console 3 years ago so it would be nice to have for the people who didnt have a chance to get it and im pretty sure you would want B/C if yours didnt have it right so the people with it dont care and tell people to get over it and people without want it

also another point the ps3 slim is more powerful allong with smaller cause of the advancements also i am compleatly covered under warrenty

as manufacturing costs go down prices go down
