Lily Allen quits music following anti-piracy tirades

24 September 2009 19:50 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 29 comments

Lily Allen quits music following anti-piracy tirades Lily Allen appears to have decided to completely gut her music career because she apparently cannot make any money from recorded music anymore. The performer said she has no plans to tour or make a new album. "Just so you know, I have not renegotiated my record contract and have no plans to make another record," she said on their anti-file sharing blog.

"The days of me making money from recording music has been and gone as far as I'm concerned, so I don't (at this point) stand to profit from legislation." The move comes after Lily Allen found herself on the opposite side of artists in the UK such as Radiohead and Robbie Williams over proposed measures to tackle illegal file sharing that included disconnecting pirates from the Internet.

The brief controversy was entertaining though, not least because Lily Allen found herself accused of copyright infringement too. Torrentfreak called out Allen for 1:1 copying an article from Techdirt without attributing it to the site on her blog. She responded with, "I THINK ITS QUITE OVIOUS [sic] THAT I WASNT TRYING TO PASS OF THOSE WORDS AS MY OWN , HERE IS A LINK TO THE WEBSIITE I ACQUIRED THE PIECE FROM," seemingly misreading the accusation as plagiarism.

Torrentfreak then went on to point out that Allen has scanned a number of articles from newspapers and uploaded them too, and to top it off, found two mixtapes that she was offering for download on her own websites that were loaded with 19 unauthorized tracks.

Well her father has a few contacts, she had a myspace page, surprised she has got as far as she had. As said if she was really any good, there would not be a problem. Enjoy your 15 minutes and get back to reality.

Its a pity un-elected Peter Mandelson doesn't use his energies to sort out the thieving Bankers, who even now are squandering Taxpayers money by still giving themselves bonus's, and making staff redundant with the Governments funding, instead of picking on the small fry downloaders, who's only crime is to cut the profits of the millionaire Film & music industry moguls, who rip off the public in any case with their inflated prices, just shows what a slap up lunch with geffen can buy, with this snake in the grass.

Trying to make a living from a dead business model. Like trying to drink water from a strainer. In both cases, you'll whither away.

You have to give people a reason to like you. Going on a rant calling would-be fans thieves doesn't help. Time to re-think her career goals. We live in a time when people will find ways to sample music for free, and there are plenty of ways. If they don't like it, they won't invest in it.

My thoughts exactly. That might have something do with the whole "I can't seem to make money thing".

And she might want to look in to that contract that "she's not going to renew" to see where all her money went.

I WOULD use her liner notes as toilet paper, but they would leave my ass chapped and bloody..Oh, wait the RIAA does that to everyone anyways with their draconian theatrics! lol

Too funny! You guys can fight over this sniveling little 8!+ch and the rest of us can watch the tug-of-war. I never heard of James Blunt either; but with a name like that, he must be one of those guys who smokes joints the size of a cigar.

WTF...She sucessfuly sued a magazine for reprinting something from another magazine...but without a ruling from the orriginal magazine? What happens when the magazine that printed the original article shows that did not mis-quote her? Will she have to give the 10,000 back?

What about the mix tapes? Why isn't the RIAA or someone going after her for illigaly distributing 19 tracks for profit? And who would buy a mix tape? Who would buy any tape? CDs have been around since 1982!

BTW...checked out her music...it is truly terrible, some of the worst noise I have ever heard. She should move to Hollywood, where female musicians with no musical ability have no trouble selling millions of copies of every CD. It seems that someone with so little talent and inteligence should do very well in happy-pop-music-land, I assume the problem was with her distribution method (dubbed cassette tapes).
