Nintendo Co. Ltd has announced that sales of the Nintendo DS hand-held gaming device have reached 10 million worldwide. As you would expect, the majority of the devices sold were in Japan, with Japanese gamers picking up over 5 million since its launch in December 2004. That makes it the fastest selling video game machine in Japan to date according to the company. In the United States, Nintendo sold over 4 million of the devices since launch.
Games such as Nintendogs and Super Mario 64 DS have been most popular amongst DS owners. "It is on the upswing of its life cycle," Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing, told Reuters. After its launch in the U.S. in November 2004, Nintendo ended the year having sold 1.4 million units there. Nintendo also said that the new Wi-Fi Connection wireless gaming service has had over 550,000 unique visitors globally.
The company's Game Boy Advance SP sold 4.6 million units in North America in 2005, compared to 7.6 million in the previous year. Both the Nintendo DS and Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) helped lift the U.S. video game industry in the past year. U.S. video game hardware and software sales were $7.6 billion through November 2005.

Well it depends what you like. I got myself a psp yesterday, and has already taken my iPods place.
I don't understand these statistics. I mean, I like to keep an open mind on things, but I played a DS on the thursday before Christmas (Fifa 06) And the graphics and gameplay were about at the same level as the Nokia N-Gage ..
Well, each to their own..

Does it matter how many they sold.
It just depends on what you want your hand held to do.
Play a game or watch a movie or both.

Perhaps you just played a lousy game. It was only soccer, how many different things can they really add to the game, when they've been releasing a new version practically every year for the last 10-15 years. Did the N-Gage have a touchscreen...?

OzMick - what use is a touch screen if the gameplay & graphics are crap?

-It's obvious you don't play soccer games that often..
I don't really care what the n-gage has or hasn't - it's rubbish.

You missed my point. A crap game, regardless of the console is a crap game. You played a crap game that doesn't take advantage of the platform. There are a lot of such games for each of the consoles, you shouldn't just base your opinion from a single game, especially a tired EA Sports title. The company has just been sticking a new number on the end more often than not and just pushing it as the latest and greatest with next to no innovation. Thus the fact that the game handled just like an N-Gage: it was probably just written for the sole purpose of porting to other platforms, thus the saying "A jack of all trades is a master of none".

in my fair opinion, the ds blows. its made of sh*tty plasic, it folds, the has touching which will lead to scraches, two screens to ensure my eyes have to move too much to play a game, a stylis that is easily lost (i found two at my school), and the graphical abilities are no more than a step up from the gba.

My kids got DS's for Christmas. I find the touch screen is a very good innovation, giving you gameplay possibilities that you can't get on the others.
One thing to note too, is that Nintendo's figures are units SOLD, where the figures that Sony releases are units SHIPPED, big difference there.
I like the PSP too, it has a much better screen, but most of the games I have played have been versions of games I have already played on the PS2, nothing innovative like the DS games.

The DS touch screen is very innovative, but dont forget the DS is CHEAP! Here in the UK you can get one from a major retailer for about £70 and sometimes that even come with a game! Don't forget Mario etc are Classic games and dont be suprised to see parents hiding away at 12am playing Mario 64 on their sons DS, whereas alot of parents havent heard of alot of games that are on the PS2/PSP so dont have a personal connection with the product. lol i'm going a but deep now, oh well i hope you see they point im trying to make
