TDK ready to ship 25GB Blu-ray recordable media

10 April 2006 20:19 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 74 comments

TDK ready to ship 25GB Blu-ray recordable media The TDK Corporation has announced that it is ready to ship single layer Blu-ray recordable media to retailers. They provide a 25GB storage capacity in both write-once (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RW) media. The company claims they will be the first publicly available Blu-ray recordable discs. The blank media will be available for the launch of Blu-ray devices which is expected to begin in June. Dual-layer 50GB recordable media will not be available then however.

TDK expects its 50GB recordable media to be available later this year, priced at $47.99 for write-once and $59.99 for rewritable. The 25GB discs will cost $19.99 for write-once and $24.99 for rewritable. The Blu-ray camp believes the 25GB storage capacity is sufficient for recording a single video at 1080p. There will also be recordable HD-DVD media available very soon.

The HD DVD camp will roll out dual layer 30GB recordable media before dual layer recordable BD media arrives. The first generation of Blu-ray recorders will not support dual layer discs. It will take a number of years before recordable media for both formats will become widely used, when it becomes more affordable and when components for both evolve further.

Just be careful with your Hard Drive. Overuse can cause corruption. If all you do is store stuff and that's it, then you should be fine, but if you constantly delete, format, write, overwrite, etc... your drive may die in a couple of years.

If these are reliable, I'd be willing to give them a try, but the burner required would be so expensive, it just isn't worth it. You'd have to write A LOT before the value of these outweighs that of a hard disk, at this price anyway. But then again, as said, this is the grand opening price. Soon after, the price will no doubt start to plummet. That's been the case with every media type except DVD-RAM.

Will they release this like the dvd recorders now speed by speed plus you will have too have a powerful machine too encode at 36 mbps.
sammorris (AfterDawn Addict) 13 April 2006 11:29 Send private message to this user
Encode? Who said anything about encoding? You just don't get those sorts of speeds, this is writing to the disc. Encoding is done before you write to the media!

I am personally not cheap, but money wise. If these swindlers think I will buy their products at prices ranging at 19.99$ and above, they are out of their minds.

Hypothetical situation here, what if you use the disc, the power goes off, you're in the middle of a burn...BOOM

19.99$ DOWN THE DRAIN!!! And since in the States minimum wage is 5$ an hour (which is close to slavery salary if you ask me) that is 4 hours for a crappy disc you won't end up using.

Just as a tangent, minimum wage here in Montreal is 7.40$ an hour. Still chump change if you ask me.

And what about these ridiculous 50 gb blue ray discs...at close to 50$ per disc...HA!

HA! YA OK! I will stick to cheap 48cents dvds that come up to 6$. thanx

    Aren't we forgetting something?
With brand new technology, this problem always occurs. Now recordable DVDs have been about for a while the prices are reasonable. If you must dive in to be the first to use them, then you will be paying over the odds for them. I had no idea US minimum wages were so low, In the UK it's about the same in pounds, with a 1.8 exchange rate!

I agree with peanuts2. I use CD and DVD+/-RW's and external HD's for all of my back up. It cost much less than this "new tech" stuff they keep coming out with. It also works with everything I already own. WOW!!! 2X write speed!!! YE HAW!!! Luck to all!!!
sammorris (AfterDawn Addict) 3 May 2006 14:52 Send private message to this user
Yeah exactly, I've only started writing DVDs often in the past few months. The majority of discs i've burnt are 8 or 16x discs.

Once again, sammorris has a good point, in a few years the cost factor will come down and what is new now will be commonplace in 3 to 5 years, just like everything else. But, also, by then this will be replaced by the "Next New Thing". Pay the piper!!! Luck to all!!!

The next new thing, gets us talking. One wonders whether you can use UV to read discs. By then, we'll probably have something better than a big plastic disc, there'll end up being a legacy slot for those CDs, DVDs and HD-DVDs, then like a slot that attaches a 500x SD card or equivalent. It'd eliminate the once-only issue. No coasters either!

It's a wonder that everything hasn't already gone to some type of "Memory Card" or "Stick" yet. I'm sure it will come down to something simple, just give it time.

    Luck to all!!!

Well who knows, a mere couple of years ago you could only get 16MB flash drives, and USB only really became commonplace 7 years or so ago. Before that it was PS/2, serial and parallel.

First time I've heard of this problem unless CD-R's are abused severely. Sorry dude, hope you have better luck in the future. I have hundreds of copies I've collected over the years and have backed them up to MP3's. Whenever I need a new copy of a disc, I pull up the MP3's and re-convert them to standard format so my standard CD player will play them. But I have never had one flake. Have your disc been exposed to alot of heat or sunlight? I've heard this may cause that problem. Also, is it the top or bottom flaking? LOL!!!

Wake up dead!!! Luck to all !!!

I'd say that was the problem. I'd recommend one of two things: 1- Kill the cat or, 2- put the CD's somewhere they can't be pissed upon! The bottom side of the top layer of the disc is where the DATA is recorded and if this gets scratched or chipped, disc is ruined. Good luck replacing the ones you lost. I've been messed up and been in contest to see who could throw a CD the furthest. They fly quite well, and coasters make great targets at the rifle range. So have some fun with the ones you had messed up and look at the bright side, be creative and don't just throw them away, recycle them like I do!!! Have fun and good luck!!!
