Disney forms a Nintendo-exclusive video game studio

7 November 2006 18:21 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 13 comments

Disney forms a Nintendo-exclusive video game studio Disney has displayed its faith in Nintendo's new Wii console by forming a development studio that will produce content exclusively for the console and Nintendo's handheld gadgets. Fall Line, the new studio based in Salt Lake City and headed by Scott Novis, is the fourth game development studio now under Disney. The plan is, of course, for Disney to cut back on out-sourcing game development and produce its own software.

Avalanche Software, Propaganda Games, and Climax Racing are owned by Disney. Disney has a vast array of brands that can be brought to the games industry, whether they span back decades or are more recent box office hits created by studios like Pixar. However, with Pixar producing content that gets the attention that "Cars" or "The Incredibles" have gotten, Disney will have to wait to develop Pixar-branded videogames for some time.

Currently THQ holds the game rights to the next four Pixar movies. "It seems like with our brand, the Nintendo platform is a really good place to put our development effort," said Fall Line head Scott Novis. Novis previously worked on the game adaptations of the movie Cars. In December, Chicken Little will become the first game from Disney to be available for the Wii console. It was developed by Avalanche Software.

Could be but I doubt, since KH is a joint venture between them and Square.

This is more a mini studio for porting stuff to the WII first and maybe focusing on WII content 2nd,Unless of coarse they keep THQ or whoever to churn Diz titles/ports out.

On the positive side of things, it was announced a couple months ago, that Disney and Square are looking to do what is being called a 'Nintendo version' of Kingdom Hearts, probably with popular Nintendo icons. I wouldn't mind seeing square characters toe to toe with the Queen Metroid, or Bowser(How funny would that be?). It seems that this is not only possible, but highly probable. Unfortunately, a title, plot, and screens are unavailable, it seems they are more in the concept stages right now, and much is to be decided.

Hello, I'm new here, and I registered because I was highly interested in your statement, Handsom. You say that Square-Enix and Disney are wanting to develop a 'Nintendo version' of Kingdom Hearts, and this was confirmed a few months back? When and where was this confirmed?

I'm not trying to call you a liar, I'm just highly interested in such a possibility.

I'm glad ZIppyDSM stepped in.... Because I just looked, and honestly couldn't find it anymore. I'm guessing that it ended up becoming that new Crystal Chronicles title; I hope not, personally.

well like I said Square is tight lipped and there are no solid rumors floating about, altho unless Nintendo,Square and Disney make a unholy pact he PS3 is the best bet, however th PS3 is becoming like the N64....

who knows the WII might be the rebirth of nintendo.

I'd like to thank you guys for replying to my inquiry, though I guess there's not really much evidence for this. As for what system KH3 will be on...I think my bet is actually going to be multi-platform.

I believe sometime in winter 2006 Square-Enix said that they wouldn't have all of their RPGs on the PS3, that they'd 'spread the love equally,' this means there's a good chance that Wii and Xbox 360 fans may get to experience KH3.

I still think a Nintendo/Square/Disney crossover game would be quite a sight to see. Sora, Donald, and Goofy aiding Link defend Castle Town against Heartless? That just sounds plain awesome.

As for the PS3 going out like the N64...don't count the PS3 out just yet, I think their biggest gun right now is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Now you may not think one game can change the tide, but we all know what happened with Halo and the Xbox, after all.

Because the Wii is rather watered down the PS3 cant find its head for its arse and the 360 is thusly American ,Jp devs have lil choice but to go multi platform, their pride will not let them make exclusive 360 titles at least not in great numbers....

at least this is my feeling,I have a gut feeling "flag ship" titles will only be first party...

    I love irony...

I just got my new EGM mag, and on my initial flip-through; what should I come across on pg. 39? The first picture I've seen yet for "Mushroom Kingdom Hearts" coming to the Wii in 2008. I'm not a huge fan of Mario's look for it; but hey, they wanted to make it all fit, you know?

    Quote:
    Excerpt:
"First off, Mushroom Kingdom Hearts is a Wii exclusive and will feature a cast of over 41 Nintendo characters. Not only that, but it will also feature Sora, Mickey and a flock of other favorites from the first two Kingdom Hearts. And as far as the story goes, all we know is Mario will get his hands (and feet) dirty hammering down on the Heartless... oh, and apparently some princess needs saving, too."
    How cool is that?

Yeah, I was about to say, I thought that was false. However...you know what guys? I have an idea: could it be probable that KH3 will include Nintendo worlds sort of as a...surprise, perhaps? I mean, Nomura has said he'll reveal details at the end of '07 about the next KH project, and I vaguely remember him stating that we should 'really look forward to it.' But...there's always the fans to do something like make fan fiction, or whatnot, if it doesn't happen.

ya know anythign can happen Sony has cocked up the PS3,the 360 is a US console and dissed leaving the WII last and tis under powered and dissed so whats S/E going to do they cant make great games anymore and the only way to make a profit is by making multi platform games to get as much as you can from each game sale.

I can see KH3 being on all systems I can see a KH/Nintendo game I can see a HK/Halo game I can see them putting KH3 on the PS3 only and then making the KH/Mario game for the WII,but frankly the PS3 is in kinda bad shape so any PS3 only game is goign to hurt publisher unless that pub is sony or sonys right hand.
