UK gets 220,000 PS3 consoles for launch

4 February 2007 3:57 by James "Dela" Delahunty | 13 comments

UK gets 220,000 PS3 consoles for launch When the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console launches in Europe on March 23rd, the UK will have about 22% of the available stock, or about 220,000 units. All the units available will be the 60GB model, priced at £425 in the UK, with the cheaper 20GB model coming later on. The console is expected to sell out in the UK fast and at least one retailer is already using the PS3 in a bundle to eat from its demand.

"My overall number is a bit lower than it would be if I had a less well-established product. So we’re round about the 22 per cent mark which, if you divided that into the million would give you 220,000 units." Sony Computer Entertainment's UK managing director, Ray Maguire said.

The high price of the PS3 in the UK has already received a negative response from gamers. £425 is roughly US$838, while the same PS3 model sells in the United States for $599 (£304) and in Japan for ¥59,980 (£253). Ireland also has a higher price for the console, at about €629.99, which about US$816.

There'll be a short fanboy rush.

Then sales will stall just like they have everywhere else.

Then they'll cut the price.....probably from £425 to £399 in time for x-mas.

.....and it won't make the slightest bit of difference.

If they can't sell them in Japan for 1/2 that price what makes them imagine they'll sell here?

I can't understand the constant whining about the price. Look at the prices of stand-alone Blu-ray players and HD-DVD players. PS3 prolly the cheapest Blu-ray player, and as an extra you are getting the finest console on the market.

People are just so cheap. Quality is not valued these days. I like Sony's High-End product strategy. It is a brave move and hope they make it. "Get a life Sony"? Get a job so you don't have to whine about every hundred bucks/euros/pounds spent.

    - It might be one thing if they were more or less the same price everywhere but if you look Japan is getting them a half the price they are going to expect in the UK.

That kind of wildly outrageous discrepancy always going to get people's backs well and truly up.

The truth is it's a least a year late and it isn't particularly impressive when it comes to the specs either.

Lots of people have decided that it really isn't all that and it really isn't worth it.
As stalled sales numbers show only too clearly.

    - Er, it's got nothing to do with a job, people (even people with jobs) just don't like getting so well and truly Royally stiffed on the price.

Do you never find any price a rip-off, is this your response to all high prices?
