RIAA chases down promotional tracks

Nine Inch Nails, trying to promote their new album "Year Zero" have hit a roadblock. That roadblock is the RIAA.

In trying to promote their album, NIN released an internet scavenger hunt that led to a website where you can download singles from the new album. The band also dropped USB flash drives in the bathrooms of their concert venues, with each drive containing a song from the new album.

The idea was to get fans to swap the music and start talking about the new CD which is exactly what happened.

The whole plan backfired when the RIAA began to send out emails demanding the fans to remove the music from their sites and threatening to sue them for every single shared.

Why the RIAA is going against a decision that was signed off by the label they are trying to protect is anyones guess.

What they fail to mention in the article is that NIN has made the album in it's entirety available for download on their website. For Free. Curious how the RIAA will handle that one. [ + quote]

hehe, i woulder what would happen if someone let them selfs get take to court and lose to RIAA over this. Just so they could open an appeal to counter sue the RIAA for suing them for distributing content that was already free and was consented to be that way by the copyright/label holder. hehe, might just make them think more carefully about future cases, tho im sure it wont, would be intresting to see how much you could screw back, oh and the compensation dont forget the compensation payment. The big question is, how can the RIAA possibly have any legal standing to sue? Since it was the actual copyright holders who were distributing the music, the RIAA has no legal right to get involved. the RIAA is a disembodied laywer firm loosely attached to the Media mafia they give them moeny and let them do things on their own and when the label and artis try something new the RIAA claims foul because they are not getting enough moeny from the venture. I just noticed something cool. There is a song on the said album called 'God Given'. This is an excerpt from the lyrics: "How can this be right? I'm afraid we're gonna ask you to leave This you cannot win With the color of your skin You won't be getting into the Promised Land It's just another case You people still don't know your place Step aside, out the way, wipe that look off your face Cause we are the devine separated from the swine Come on, sing along, everybody now God given" Now, if you put it into this context, it sounds like they're talking about the RIAA. -We're telling you to fark off. -Wipe that (greedy) look off your face. -"We" are the divine, the RIAA is the swine. -This (battle) you cannot win. -Distributing music is a "God given" right. ...or am I just stretching it too far? This article proves how greedy the RIAA is it dont make any sense that they are intervening in NIN person choice to promote their cd. Its crazy how they want to control every faze of the Music Industry. It would be different if they were giving away some else music but its their own and they have right to do with it as they please. I was persued by them 3 years ago for releasing my own music online.. So I gave up with it. There's no point as a small independent artist trying to fight this shower of s***. BTW.. Well janrocks that's why they earn the title of mafiaa. If you don't grease the right palms you might as well wear concrete shoes while swimming. Also without knowing the specifics of what happened to you I don't see how they could stop you releasing something you own the copyright on. [ + quote]

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the RIAA doesn't eventually try to stop free distribution of songs that are "public domain" because they don't get a kickback from them either. If I remember correctly,Nine Inch Nails is an old group and they need all the exposure they can get if they want to sell their new album and I commend them for trying to reach the public and their fans in any way they can. Personally,I won't buy a cd if I can't hear the tracks first!!!! muskie [ + quote]
