Sony strips some PS3 PlayTV functionality

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 15 Aug 2008 1:52 User comments (16)

Sony strips some PS3 PlayTV functionality Sony has confirmed that the upcoming PlayTV device will not be as great as it has been hyped to be, and will not be compatible with HD signals nor will it allow users to copy saved video over to the PSP, a PC, or any type of memory card or flash drive.
The PlayTV will allow users to stream live or recorded content to the PSP using Remote Play but that is the only way to move the content.

"With regards to PlayTV, you can not transfer content to your PSP, PC, or memory sticks. You can stream live or recorded TV content on your PSP via Remote Play only,"
said a Sony spokeswoman.

In regards to the device's incompatibility with HD signals, the Sony spokesperson said they are working on making it possible via a future firmware upgrade.

The PlayTV hits the UK in mid-September for £70.

And thus a great idea dies. Didn't Sony see that DVD's are now coming with portable versions of the movie? Apparently they missed something about demand! Plus, streaming video, HD or SD, is still crap. Looks like PlayTV will be a big letdown.

What did you expect? the truth?

Just like every other politician. They preach pronounce make promises and knowingly they won't be able to keep such promises but everybody bites the hype finding out later down the road that a bigger letdown exists. Don't believe the hype, wait for the product to be released. Then, view reviews of others and based on that judgment its on you whether to buy something that you are not pleased with.

Hmm... so what are you trying to say? Every device with a TV Tuner sold since May 2007 needs to accept digital broadcasts. I'm lost on how that affects Sony pulling out on the transfer function of PlayTV.

I can record a digital HD feed sampled down to 480 through my analog inputs on my DVD recorder (digital to analog to digital). I can convert that to any format I want to on my PC, and play it. I can take it to a PSP, iPod or Smart Phone. Yes, the quality goes down as I convert, etc. but, it drops considerably less when you have to keep bandwidth in mind for streaming. Nevermind pixelation and pauses while video buffers.

So, that means it looks like crap because... It is a bandwidth thing, not a digital broadcast thing... um... what he said ;-)

That sucks...I was expecting big things from Sony PlayTV.

Major bummer on their part...

Hey don't actually let ppl know, if we can keep it contained to the internet then ppl will still think that what we said at e3 is still reality and by the time they have the device home we already have their cash. Mwaaaah-ha! ha! ha!
