Gaikai: Sony or Microsoft will completely skip this next generation of gaming consoles

Gaikai: Sony or Microsoft will completely skip this next generation of gaming consoles Just a day after Sony confirmed it would not be unveiling a new console at this year's E3 event, one company is saying that either Microsoft or Sony will completely skip this upcoming generation of gaming systems.
Gaikai, is a cloud gaming service similar to OnLive. CPO Nanea Reeves says: "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3."

Because Nintendo has already announced and showed off parts of the Wii U, that leaves Sony and Microsoft. The Wii U will be completely revealed at E3 with a holiday release schedule.

Sony execs like Kaz Hirai have said they believe the PS3 will last its promised 10-year life cycle so the speculation is on Sony skipping this generation. Microsoft's console, which has a DVD optical drive and a less powerful processor than the PS3, can likely not last too much longer without upgrading. Top games already fill up multiple DVDs.

The WiiU is not a next-gen console; it is a current-gen console released late. It is the first Nintendo console designed to compete with current-gen consoles like the 360 and the PS3, and is not intended to compete with next-gen consoles like the XboX next and (if it is released) the PS4.

So, if Sony skips this next generation, Microsoft will have a monopoly on high-end gaming for the entire next generation by offering the XboX next and the only PC operating system that is good for games.

Sony definitely has something up their sleeve. They always deny rumors but finally end up releasing something. The PS3 and 360 have already been maxed out, it's time they release something with better specs.

Sony also never tells the truth...the promised never to remove OtherOS...it is gone. They said they were going to offer Cross-game chat; they didn't. They then said it was due to lack of ram...the same amount of ram that the 360 uses to do it.

Who the f___ is Gaikai to be a reliable source of info about what other companies are or are not doing, anyway? Unless they're being misquoted and saying someone just won't be announcing a new console at this year's E3 (which Sony has already said they won't be).

I find this hard to believe.
Microsoft will continue to develop Xbox/Kinnect - Kinnect coming to PC shortly is another indicator a more advanced version is likely I'd suggest - and a new gen is obviously going to take that even further.
The pace of PC development being what it is I'd expect annual or biannual improvements to Kinnect.

Besides as things are Microsoft know Xbox 360 has years left in it - but it's in the same way that PS2 has had long after PS3 appeared, there's your 10yr life-span.

But no new gen until beyond 2014!?
I can't see it.....not unless the console makers want everyone to return to PC gaming.
The gap is already obvious & enormous.

As for Sony I just can't see them not having a PS4 by 2014 either.....unless they are getting out of console manufacture altogether.
I think that's extremely unlikely but who knows the once dominant Sega did just that after losing out to Sony back in the day.

Even so I don't think Sony can risk another gen where they are so late to the party.

They first said it's a patent that microsoft have and Sony don't have a work around for the patent so not bothered any further about it.

Overall the game chat thing doesn't matter much 9 times out of 10 no one uses it anyway in the games that have it.

The problem these days in the PC gaming area is the hardware is so stupidly ahead of the software that there really needs to be something better in the software side.

the newest GFX cards aren't maxed out by games anymore but by seti and video converting etc.

When you have crysis etc running at 150FPS at 3960x1080P with full settings on the game and it's not even stressing the hardware.

Then you need to look at the software side, probably why all the consoles now have motion controller rather than trying to copy the Wii.

Nin is doing some wacky with the WII U...its an add on from hell...only you need to buy the whole thing. I can't see anything good coming out of it unless they have some awesome gamecube BWC.

Sony is sony and frankly the PS3 can last 10 more years the real question is do they want to allow the PS3 with all its limits to last so long... I do not think so.

MS needs a new system...period... but frankly if it dose not have BWC I am not going to bother with it.

They both have 512MB RAM, you're right there however the PS3 has 256MB system and 256MB video where as the XBox 360 has 512MB video. That could be where the limitation is. The PS3 probably taps into system RAM for video needs, if the hardware allows it.

Like I commented about Sony link just a few minutes ago, I see no reason for Microsoft to be pulling the same stunt, in a manner of speaking.

As Microsoft tries to put out a 'cheaper' startup system and then nickel & dimes the hell out of you as you go along, Sony just up & gets the full on ski mask down, no greasing, barbed wire cock ring, to the hilt penetration, eat the dirt dollar approach. Sorry, still too soon after the release of the PS3?

Simply put, economy is for crap, nobody has money and if they have to compete for people spilling high dollars for consoles they're going to make damn sure that it it's theirs respectively.

Sorry, but not quite on target. The Xbox 360 has 512 MB of unified ram. The developers determine how much ram is used for any given operation. This is actually similar to the design of the N64, which itself also had unified memory.

The real problem Sony had is that thanks to the IBM connection Microsoft knew all along what Sony were planning with PS3.

Its why the 2 systems can be so different hardware-wise and yet the practical outcomes be so similar with one slightly better at one thing some of the time & the other a little better at others some of the time.
There's so little in it.

In fact Sony R&D money helped fund some work for Xbox 360.

That's just the problem...the WiiU will be competing with the PS3 and the 360...if there is no PS4, then the only competition Microsoft will see to the XboX Next is PC (running Microsoft Windows).

Go to PC and laugh at everyone who dumps crazy money into a new console with no games and insane restrictions...that is what now.

And yet the vast majority do....every time..... while building a gaming PC is realtivly simple its too much work and upkeep for most people.

This is why most PC games are bad ports and media..er...gaming in general sucks, the consumers do not care about qaulity.

LOL, Zippy, couldn't agree more... Building customized PCs used to be so much fun (and cheap too), but I have to say, it's a disappearing art. It cost more in term of time now a day, so a lot of people don't even bother with it any more. The only incentive is self satisfaction. The passion to build a PC just not with me anymore, it's easier to turn on the button and just play, lol. I remember I joined AD just for correcting various components of my media systems. Now? Eh, passing time with a little post here and there, sort of pathetic :-(

On track to sell 15 Million this fiscal year, has brought the "gap" down to be where they are just about equal, being in the black for some time now and so on, and so on. Your main point of how many in house exclusive devs is proof enough in it of itself...though you will have a hard time from people who just don't want to hear it no matter what you say or proof you provide.
