AfterDawn.com hardware section opened

Written by Jari Ketola @ 07 Jun 2007 4:56 User comments (30)

AfterDawn.com hardware section opened We have just launched a new section at AfterDawn.com. The hardware section lists specifications of a growing number of flat panel televisions, flat panel monitors, mobile phones, DVD players (including HD DVD and Blu-ray players) as well as other devices. In addition to technical specifications, price information from our partner stores is also shown (when available).
In addition to reviews and ratings you, our users, can suggest new, missing products to any of the categories, or submit product pictures for devices that are missing one. We will be adding new categories for other types devices during the summer.

The selection of devices is currently focused mainly on products available in Europe. This is because we are based in Finland, Europe, and launched the hardware section originally on our Finnish site. The number of products aimed at the North American market will surely increase quickly!

You can find the hardware section by clicking on the Hardware tab at the top of the page or by visiting

https://www.afterdawn.com/hardware/

directly.

All type of feedback regarding the hardware section is more than welcome! Be it feature requests, suggestions, bug reports or anything, please let us know by either writing comments to this news article or by sending us feedback!

What a great addition to AfterDawn. Can't wait for it to expand to have a even bigger list of products to choose from.

Maybe they should also add a comments box for the products so everyone can comment on the product. Other than that, it's awesome.

Every product page has a link on it "Rate this product" to do exactly that. The star rating already on pages is based on our Finnish users' ratings -- and they've submitted well over 1,000 ratings so far, but obviously we wont show them on English site, as very few people here would understand them.

But, yes, best ways to help us out with this project:

-if we have a product listed that you own or have owned in the past, please rate it, as it'll give other users extremely valuable info when making a purchase decisions in future

-if you have or know a product that we don't currently have in our lists, use the Suggest a new product for this category link shown on every category page to submit a new device.

Don't know about comments but I have posted a rating already with no problems.

As stated, commenting/reviewing is already there, dunno whether it is too well hidden or what, maybe we need to replace the current link with big flashy GIF image to make it more prominent :-)

PC hardware is something that we might consider, but then again, AfterDawn is all about video and related technologies, we're not exactly a generic hardware site like THG or Anandtech, so having stuff like CPUs listed is somewhat out of our niche. But we'll consider it.

I think the more video realted of PC hardwares should be included, such as DVD Drives - lots of people post asking which is best and seeing as no one takes notice of the sticky on it (written by me :P - shameless plug), it would be nice to have a database of decent dvd drive to link them too also. :-)

Not only ripping but some of the OTT protections halve or quarter its real speed in order to "protect" retail DVDs and hurts your seeking and skipping.

Video cards/Monitors effect what you can play at and the visual qaulity there of.

Sound cards for full sound and quality.

HDDs for speed, size, realbity in DVRs and other digital related tasks.

Ouch, that's a killer. Anyway, should stop the off topic chat ;-)

Monitors are there already, as are DVD players -- I really recommend checking the hardware front page to see the categories listed.

DVD drives and video projectors are coming soon-ish.

I have an idea. I'm not sure if its already there but here goes: what about user submittable prices? Something like prices that users can submit from places they know of such as submitting the price from this online store or that one. These, of course, would also need an expiration because they will often change and the site would be left with an out of date price. Anyways, props to the people that set that section up.

I have hoped for this as I would trust product reviews from AD members more that any other site.
