jEdit is a alternative to Wordpad or Notepad. Written with Java, jEdit is available for several platforms besides the Windows OS. Primary use for jEdit includes simple programming tasks, code-editing and automated text replacements. jEdit boasts a whopping 130 included syntax highlights for most of the popular programming languages and good plugin support. The more common features such as word wrap and auto indent are included as well to make this a complete alternative text editing program.

I've only just downloaded it. If there were existing reviews I wouldn't bother to write but as this is the first it may be of some slight value for me to mention that it downloaded and installed with no problem whatever on my XP Athlon64 system.

It has a sparse, functional, pleasant appearance. It seems to have all the features I'd expect of a programmer's editor. It is quickly responsive.

I look forward to using it.
