Hard drive partitioning

Hard drive partitioning tools allow you to "split" your HDD into logical drives (such as C: D: etc in Windows), change the size of each disk, change disk format from FAT32 to NTFS, ext3, FAT16, etc.

Many of the tools allow doing changes to HDD partitions without damaging your existing data on the HDD -- a feat that your basic operating system tools usually can't accomplish. However, as with always when making major changes to file system, it is recommended to back up your data before attempting to do any changes to your partitions and/or file system.
