Five would-be cammers arrested attempting to record Transformers

11 July 2007 15:28 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 55 comments

Five would-be cammers arrested attempting to record Transformers The MPAA and the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) announced that over the July 4th weekend, five would-be cammers were arrested after they tried to illegally record the blockbuster hit Transformers.

“These arrests serve as a reminder to potential movie thieves that whether you use a camcorder or a cell phone, stealing movies off the silver screen is a crime and you will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,”
said Dan Glickman, Chairman of the MPAA.

“Once again, theatre employees and theatre patrons have worked together to protect the art form they love, by intercepting movie thieves in the act of their crime. Thieves beware -- if you attempt to steal movies off the screen, we will find you and we will have you arrested.”
said John Fithian, President and CEO of NATO.

The first arrest was made in New York City and the suspect is the first to be charged under new laws that were passed in May by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He faces up to six months in jail and a $5000 USD fine.

The second defendant was arrested in El Centro, California when the projectionist saw her trying to record using a Nokia video phone. She faces up to one year in jail and $2500 USD in fines.

The other three were arrested respectively in Illinois, Georgia and Orlando. The suspect in Georgia was also carrying an ounce of marijuana but only faces charges for the camming because apparently in Georgia, carrying illegal drugs is better than illegally recording a film.

I hear not doing wrong things keeps you from being punished from doing wrong things.

All I want to know is why did they only charge the girl in Georgia with "Stealing" a movie and not the pot. The last time i checked, no one has ever had there life completely ruined from illegally recording movies, as some have had theirs ruined from drugs. In my opinion, the movie police probably should have called the real police, and had them (the real police) handle the situation.

Just as a comparison, if an individual robs a bank and fires a gun in the process, do they ignore that he fired the gun in order to emphasize that he was trying to steal money?

The movie theaters tried that law down here in Australia but somebody took them on for restrictive trading and the theaters lost. :-)

    Go the little guy!!!!

this is where being inventive with consumer friendly fees would come into play, charge 5$ pre ice bag (you know thos stay cool bags for meats and stuff, they also have bag based coolers) make a simple clean up charge if you want to bring your own stuff charge 5-10$ for it, they spend so much time raping the consumer they forget that if you ask nicely and try and not charge so much they will bend over without being forced :P

It's beyond me why anyone would even want to watch a movie recorded like that. I want the 5.1 and the works!

    DjDanio,

Why do you need the whole film in cam quality to judge whether it is worth spending any money on?

Most people can tell from a Trailer whether it's their cup of tea or not. I think downloading a cam copy to make sure you like a film, and that it's worth spending any money, is a bit over the top to be honest.
Ahh you don't know what kind of nuts power this forum. We have too much time on our hands and we do it because we can.

Ya I was surprised over hellboy, since I knew lil about the comic I could relax a bit, even so the charatcers and humor came through well,it was a solid non pompous action flick, when thous "people" try and tell me Xmen is done with style and grace I turn off, sorry I don't care if the writers of the comics where there,I don't take kindly to pompous action flicks they try and "recreate" the IP they are based on.....

I went and saw this film in the theatre and to be totally honest with you I didn't go to the movie expecting much. The movie was actually a whole lot better than I thought it would be. I was expecting a movie that was completely CGI and a little more exciting than a cartoon. That is not what this one turned out to be. There were some quite good action sequences as well as car chases. The main female character was eye candy with a mechanical knowledge of how things work, and believe it or not there were quite a few funny parts too.

There have been telecine machines for ages, and that's how film is captures for transfer to DVD (and friends). The problem is that the machines are expensive and to make use of it you need to get your hands on the actual film of the movie, which is more difficult to do than use a camcorder from the audience.

I personally did not like this film due to the fact that it was not at all interesting. If they got arested for this film well thats their own headache. Cam versions are no good anyway.

The cam version i got was pretty good (if it wasnt i would get it exchanged!) especially since i got it 3wks before it came out, but i got it by accident & didnt realise it was the film version until i read about in a Face-Off version with The Simpsons Movie also out on the same day (27th July) LOL

Although the story-line was a bit thin, but the action sequences were the filler throughout the film, no doubt there will be a sequel as usual :)

I must ask them the next time i see them, as they might have The Simpsons Movie as well?

All this talk of pivacy gets me really, really sick. The more pivacy laws they make, the richer these producers, actors, and directors become. I just have to laugh when I hear Mel Gibson or Steven Spielberg talk about all the money they lose from pivacy. They are both BILLIONAIRES. Not millionaires, BILLIONAIRES. Now that is just plain ridiculous and should be a crime, if anything is a crime. Then we have the blood sucking Movie theatures that charge more money for a box of 2 boxes popcorn & 2 sodas than I pay for food for the entire week. They do not allow you to bring food in and totally rip you off. Can anyone say price gouging? The bottom line with Pivacy is this. These people that download movies or get these recorded cam movies are not going to spend money anyway. Eithwer they do not have the movie or they will not spend it. All the people making the billions of dollars should just accept it already. They are getting all the money they can get already.

I read that story in my local newspaper of someone being arrested at UltraStar theatres in El Centro, California. I live about 20 miles away from UltraStar. According to the Imperial Valley Press, I understood that her Nokia phone was capable of recording the entire film. I didn't read a follow up of the incident again and the newspaper did not say if it was a male or female.

How much is enough? If you make $200 for two weeks delivering pizzas is it OK for some bum off the street to take five bucks out of your pocket because HE thinks you make 'enough'? Movie going is a luxury service. If you can't afford to go, don't do it. I don't.
rwzz (Newbie) 1 January 2008 17:46 Send private message to this user
it's a luxury to get a box of popcorn that costs about 20 cents to make? But that is not the point. My point is that Federal laws permit recording any movie. You can sell the copy, give the copy away or do anything you want with it. So you are saying that movie going is a luxury and the quality of the movie does not matter to the average person that pays $10 a ticket? They just go there to get ripped off on popcorn, soda & candy, and then they can brag that they went to the movies. It is a luxury and they want to brag that they are rich? We all know this is not the truth. The MPAA spends millions of dollars to advertise horrible movies every week. Then they want more and more laws passed so they can get away with it. And most of these laws would never get passed through Congress either, because they are unconstitutional. They are all State laws that would be thrown out in any supreme court

The theaters make very little on the film itself. They only get a percentage of ticket sales with very little coming from the first couple of weeks. They make more money the longer the film runs. They make their real money from consessions. That's why popcorn and drinks are so high. Who in their right mind would run a business and not make a profit?
