AnyDVD's new AI boasts ability to crack future DRM

13 October 2007 19:52 by Rich "vurbal" Fiscus | 25 comments

AnyDVD's new AI boasts ability to crack future DRM SlySoft claims AnyDVD now contains code that will be able to crack new DRM that may be added or changed in the future. The feature, officially called an "AI scanner" is supposed to work similarly to antivirus software, which can heuristically find new viruses. AnyDVD is a popular program for removing copy protection from DVDs, HD DVDs, and BDMV discs.

"The AI Scanner in AnyDVD is a new, pro-active copy protection circumvention method," said Giancarlo Bettini, SlySoft's chief executive, in a statement. "It allows the user to make safety backups of his DVD movies even if the newest anti-piracy technology is used. It is our belief that the AI Scanner will even work on protections yet to be released, so we see this as a future-proof technology. This is indeed a hard nut to crack for the copy protection industry."

As Blu-ray in particular was designed with an option to support changing DRM with player firmware updates, it's likely that AnyDVD's AI claims will be put to the test sooner rather than later. While it's possible it will work as advertised, SlySoft will certainly continue to provide program updates as new copy protection features are cracked. It looks like this is more of an attempt to reassure potential customers that future copy protection will always be broken.

if it can be coded, it can be cracked, but all the industry (apparently) wants to do is stop the commercial pirates from selling their wares at the launch and delay them long enough for the industry to make a profit. this is why there are countless law suits for private file sharers no doubt!

What the industry is lobbying for is in America and then American global laws (lol) that any software on your pc that circumvents DRM is illegal and you will be severely prosecuted just for owning this software and be charged with attempted ip theft, which is why imo drm like sony's xcp rootkit had a phone home abilty the same as bd+ on blu-ray so when the studios are ready they can scan your pc and alert the authorities to someone owning a copy of any dvd.

how do companies pull off a law that would criminalise people and send them to jail for 20 years for copywrite infringement exactly? i suppose the big lobby's and media owners like Rupert Murdoch can make what laws they like now then!

Back in May, the Justice Department issued some proposed legislation to tighten US intellectual property laws and to criminalize some forms of "attempted infringement." Now, legislation based on the proposals has been introduced in Congress by Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH), complete with stiffer jail terms for violators and the controversial "attempted infringement" clause.

H.R. 3155, the Intellectual Property Enhanced Criminal Enforcement Act of 2007, aims widely. Everything gets a section: unauthorized recording of films in theaters, circumventing copy protection, trafficking in counterfeit goods. The bill even directs the Attorney General to send federal prosecutors to take up permanent residence in Hong Kong and Budapest and specifies the number and makeup of FBI investigative teams.

In most cases, the bill appears to simply double existing penalties. Section 12 alone, for instance, makes a 10-year prison term into a 20-year term, three years into six, five into 10, and six into 12. Poof! More prison time!

I seldom make backups of my dvd's anymore - because most movies nowadays aren't worth watching again - however, there are occasionally a few I own that I do watch over again and make backups of.

The problem is I only use DVD shrink and DVD decryptor which haven't been updated in a few years and sometimes I can't make backups so I've been looking for a new program and I want to know if this programs is definatly worth getting?

Also what is the difference between AnyDVD and CloneDVD?
aabbccdd (Inactive) 14 October 2007 8:59 Send private message to this user
    anydvd

AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie as soon as it's inserted into the drive, allowing you then to backup the movie using a DVD backup tool such as CloneDVD and CloneDVD mobile. You can also remove the RPC region code, thereby making the movie region free and viewable on any DVD player and with any DVD player software.

    clonedvd 2

CloneDVD 2 copies movies to create unparalleled picture quality DVD backups, whether it?s the main title you?re copying or the complete DVD. CloneDVD will compress long footage at high speed to the highest of quality using specialised transcoding technology, allowing you to select your audio and language settings and also the final target size. Easy for even the novice user, CloneDVD?s intuitive Filmstrip assistant guides you through all the available configuration settings, allowing you to choose which chapters to include and offering the option to trim individual chapters.

so basically anydvd removes the protection then clonedvd 2 can transcode and burn the movie

I'm curious is the quality of the transcode/burn really that much better than a combination of freeware programs? For instance I use dvdfab, vobblanker, DVD shrink, and then burn with Nero. I guess what i'm really asking is, are you just paying for convenience and constant updates? Or is the final quality noticeably better?
    edit: for grammar

basically yes you're paying for convenience and constant updates and actually the final quality using the "Deep Analysis" with dvd shrink is a little better if the compression is higher . you won't notice a difference if the compression isn't that high between dvd shrink or clonedvd 2

SlySoft delivers, as usual. This time with a really nice addition to the software. WIth how well there products work, this shouldn't disappoint. This also should make it so you don't have to update as often in order to backup the newest titles. :-)

    Peace

as they do, a app that is designed to use easily and work!

the problem is that in the usa, just owning a copy of this will soon land you with a 20 year jail term!

I use it, and it works. AnyDVD will also help out old programs; DVD X Copy Express, DVD Decrypter and other old burning programs that just can't cut it buy themselves anymore!

    Burn On,
    Russell

PS. It it is less than half the price of DVD X Copy Express that I bought in 2003 and latter with updates at the OLD AfterDawn.
    Later!

The change log for AnyDVD indicates that AI Scanner is a DVD feature not an HD DVD feature. Therefore it is more likely something akin to DVDFab's PlayPath or RipIt4Me's process to emulate a standalone DVD player's firmware that ignors the nonDVD compliant stuff on the disc and thus able to play.

The private viewing systems supported by the major motion picture studios is seriously flawed as it supports the unwelcome transition of a would be theater released to the streets. Why would they support a lazy home viewer system where they're trusting anyone of there choice to view these films "For Your Consideration" from home or in someone’s privacy, as if this system would not encourage duplication of a given film which is due to be released or is still in theaters and being considered for an award? Private screenings should be held in theaters where no media is distributed and the movie remains in the possession of the studio. Today most computers are sold with DVD and or HD/BLU-RAY recorders. Your local BEST BUY is loaded with blank DVD media, and on the internet you can find numerous DVD decrypting software designed to assist in duplicating copy written material. The studios don't care. All of the attention from the so-called boot-legging is just another form of promotion and no doubt is a projected $insured$ loss. The motion picture company's and there distributors are making money off of this. This duplicating of copy written film media is being done in home by everyday people who purchase DVD, HD DVD & BLU-RAY DVD retail. Be it as collectors with interest in archiving there purchase, or the budding college student looking to make some extra cash on campus and Hollywood knows this. That's why this behavior isn't aggressively perused by the US legal authorities. It's very much a white collar crime. The guy on the street is doing nothing but pushing illegally sourced material from a downtown urban distributor for small profit, he's not making them. Your sons and daughters are making them at home and duplicating, uploading, & dowloading. All from their home PC.

Regarding the SlySoft product downloads, I don't intend to use them on this particular computer which I only use on the internet.
It is much more convenient for me to use another of my computers, which is in an office situation and not connected to the net.
Thus: Can I download any particular product that I may purchase from them, burn it to a CD, then use the programs on my other PC.
