Sony to build media service for PS3

24 October 2007 11:45 by Rich "vurbal" Fiscus | 37 comments

Sony to build media service for PS3 Sony Online Entertainment will be working with Sony Computer Entertainment to deliver movies, television, and music to PS3 gamers.

“We are building a software infrastructure to distribute video and music, more particularly video, through the PlayStation Network,” Sony CEO Howard Stringer said in an interview with the Financial Times. He wouldn't give a projected date for launching the new distribution Channel, but did say Sony will know more in early 2008. He added “We are trying to get our devices to talk to each other efficiently. PlayStation Network should migrate from gadget to gadget. But initially it starts with PlayStation devices and then to TV and beyond. That’s the goal.”

Despite having a great deal of movie, television, and music content of their own, Sony hasn't managed to build a channel to distribute content to PS3 users, although they envision the console as more of a home entertainment center. By comparison, Microsoft's Xbox Live service already allows Xbox 360 owners to buy television episodes and rent movies.

Although Xbox Live Video Marketplace already has deals with many major studios, they don't have access to Sony's properties, which the new Playstation service will.

I guess there are only so many ways of doing things. I'm so tired of sony dragging ass with these things. I bought my ps3 from the start and have been waiting and waiting for good things to happen. I'm still waiting.

And when it is complete you will get them, for free. Really, people complain about delays, but the complaining would be 10,000x worse if they rushed out a broken piece of crap that was barely usable.

For FREE? are you completely dillusioned? this content will have a heavy premium attached, anti consumer drm that limits its usage with an unfriendly eula, and more than likely with a whole load of targeted adds!

take a breat and breathe for a minute or two nobrainer. Everything has unfriendly eula so that if the company decides to do anything in this lawsuit happy world, they can point to the eula and say we are well within our rights to do that. Of course there is going to be drm, they are a company, out to make money, not a charity. Hopefully there will be adds, I can ignore adds, they don't force me to buy their product, but they will be giving sony their money to put the add there to keep sony's online service free, to me.

Thats is kind of the point. Sure its free butt its crap. If we had to pay like M$ I'm sure it would be finished by now. Personally I wouldn't mind paying a fee if it were worth it. Sony needs to get their ass in gear, quit talking and start putting out. They just don't seem motivated.

so there is one good game to justify the price and oblivion has been availably on both the 360 and pc for a long time now! games coming cannot be put in the list as they may suck, relying on a handful of upcoming games is ridiculous!

anyway back on topic has anyone seen the EULA, PRICE or DRM limitation of the proposed streaming of content that is yet again a work in progress as are all the games that may be worth playing, but does £300/£350 justify you waiting for them to be released?

That list is actually not very impressive. It has been over a year since release. Its not like they didn't know the system was coming out before release. Plus I wouldn't use warhawk as an example, that game has so many bugs its horrible. That game was great for about a week until everybody started playing and servers couldn't handle the load. You would think this was a hobby instead of a full time job for these guys. The only exclusive title worth a crap is Heavenly Sword and its nothing but a God of War clone. I mean how many times have they set release dates and then a week before they push it up a month? Oh, again and again. I'm not a fan of billy gate's box but he seems to be a little more innovative and driven. I see trailers for Bioshock, Halo 3, and Gears of War and my mouth waters. Make my mouth water sony.

Time will tell on the up coming games of course, but they have promise of being good. Sometimes you look a head and see promise of nothing but crap, these don't fall into that category. Zippy, most good games for the 360 that are any good are coming out on PS3/PC, whats your point? Most developers need to multi-platform to cover the costs of development because M$ and $ony keep thinking gaming is all about polygons and developers don't want to make a game that looks like crap compared to others on the market.

    and?
FF is utter crap,MGS aint half bad but then again is MGS so its either as good as you can stand it(MSG is ok), most devs make either cash in titles or release unfinished projects, so between the PS3 and 360 you might have a handful of games thats worth the price of the game but not the console itself.

Frankly I would rather have a bad looking game its its fun to play, something the whole indutry has forgotten games are abotu fun not mindless grinding/button pushing for the appearance there of.

if games are going multi format that negates the ps3 especially the new non ps2 b/c version as games on the pc look and play far better and the 360 is still cheaper, not sure if the 360 has any sort of media service but with the pc you are spoilt for choice unlike the ps3 where you will be locked into 1 service, sonys which will probably explode after 5mins due to drm restrictions and will need a licence for everyone in the house hold to listen/watch it.

imo i believe this is the way sony is going in the future to obtain more sales games and media content will be sold like warhawk via psn and locked to one account meaning every person will need to purchase their own copy even in your house making your family pirates for wanting to play it on their account as the DRM will block them. this is where things get ugly as all this content in non transferable so when you sell you ps3 all them games and content you purchased are lost and because of the drm you will not be allowed to move it to another device (none ps3) protecting your investment.

"Sony to build media service for PS3"

Sony Computer Entertainment !, what happend to all the beautiful things I am able to do with my PS3?.

Sony Computer Entertainment, shame on you. and dumb of me for believing in your empty promises, many sleepless hours, time spended it on long lines, cold December and did purchased not one, but two of your marvelous console, hopping that I would get the best of the best, and yet almost a year later you still are telling me to wait
    a little more longer.

Sony CEO Howard Stringer, “We are trying to get our devices to talk to each other efficiently. PlayStation Network should migrate from gadget to gadget. But initially it starts with PlayStation devices and then to TV and beyond. That’s the goal.”

Mr. Stringer, what the f**ing crap are you talking about, I have Sony Ericsson USB, IR + Bluetooth cell phone and PS3 not even recognize that it is there, also Sony Mini Disk Recorder with USB port and PS3 not even wink at it. Also my PSP connects with the PS3 one way only, explain yourself what would be the point for me to watch Playstation Network TV, or so call "the new distribution Channel". I tell you right now it's going to happend a tremendous miracle from your part for me to purchase any service related to Sony Computer Entertainment.

I just want GAMES.... WHERE ARE THE ORIGINAL BLU-RAY GAMES !, THAT HAS BEEN PROMISE

Sometimes I wonder why I even try to talk sense to you Zippy. You think all games are crap because they don't live up to FF6, which you have stated to be the best game ever. I'm not to sure what nobrainer is trying to say in his anti drm rant there. Like he thinks companies want people not to buy their games and will do little to nothing to get money for their product.

from a RPG stand point FF4 and FF6 are some of the best made yet, why? the games was made to be fun, not a incessant grind fest with boring equipment sets with happen to be 8,X-12,wild arms is as bland and so are most other rpgs not that all suck just most of the better known ones.

FF12 is broken and most want to ignore that....

NB is going on about Sony locking down content to each PS3,I think its a stretch but knowing sony it could happen.

Besides zippy makes no sense, "ZOMG you can not learn zippy sense for he THINKS!!!"

Even if Sony locks down the movies you are able to download, all you have to do is run your ps3 through a dvd recorder (the kind made to take home movies from vhs to dvd) and play the movie on your ps3 hard drive, press record on the recorder and it is just like recording something onto vhs like millions used to. The quality won't be as good probably but free is free.

Media service for PS3?! Um, wasn't this the promise of the PS2? Supposed to replace every media device in your house, and connect to the internet for game updates and user interaction. I personally don't believe any of this hype, and can't imagine Sony pulling off now what they've been promising for 6 or 7 years.
As was said, the little tiny bit of CRAP they do release will be all DRM fubarred anyways.
