New, larger HDD model of Xbox 360 coming?

9 March 2008 14:06 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 43 comments

New, larger HDD model of Xbox 360 coming? Microsoft may be planning to upgrade the Xbox 360 Pro to a 60GB HDD model, if new rumors are to be believed. The mid-tier model of the popular game console currently offers 20 GB of storage and the new rumor touts that Microsoft will be replacing the stock 20GB drive with the much higher capacity 60GB drive.

The upgraded console will come at the end of May or early June and although no exact reasons for given for the upgrade, we can imagine it is due to the growing power of the Xbox Video Marketplace and the larger size of game demos from the Xbox Live arcade.

On top of the upgrade, it is believed the company is considering a completely new model, although what will be inside this new model is uncertain as of yet. Could it possibly have an internal Blu-ray drive? We will keep you updated on any new developments.

I still sense fanboyism in this post. How can you go off and say that you own all 3 and also say that the 360 has too much violent games and the PS3 doesn't have enough? And because of that, the Wii is downright better, right? So if you think the Wii is sooooo much better than the other two, it would make sense to only own the Wii, again....right? All 3 systems have their advantages and disadvantages, thus making your post/statement invalid.

And please, lets not try to derail this thread and turn it into a flamewar/console war/fanboy thread.
When I say better, I don't mean it's better in things that it offerers and it's power. I simply mean that Nintendo seems to have thought out their sales plans better than Sony and Microsoft. BTW,if anything, I'm a complete Sony fanboy.

None of this interest me. Internal Blue-Ray will put it up there with the PS3 price... which I'm not willing to pay. $349 was hard enough for me to cough up. 60gb HDD... i'll worry about that if GTA4 DLC and Mass Effect DLC take up like 10 gigs combined. I prefer to DL movies from sites based around the PC since you can own those rather than just rent them for 24 hours.

Good point. Interal blu-ray would possibly boost the price of the 360. Unless they just want to be idiots and keep it still the same price. And I emphasize idiots.

Microsoft won't add a internal blue ray. there are legal issues. if there is an internal blue ray then Microsoft will be chatgrd a percent of what the entire device costs. now if it is external that microsoft will only be charged for the external portion of there drive, not the entire product.

this happened to sony. when they build recovers they have an external ipod dock instead of a internal one.

Sony and MS can work out a deal where the cost is transfered to the consumer so if they can strike a deal they both like it can happen.

Oy, the air is full of fanboyism... As for the article, this just seems like a copy of the PS3 with the changing of HDD sizes.

Alright... I'm going to try and not throw any fanboy gas on the current flame war...

I personally feel that putting an internal Blu-Ray drive on a 360 ONLY appeals to those who do not own one currently. This is ESPECIALLY true if MS ever expects to put games on the Blu format.. that COMPLETELY screwes almost 20 million people out of content. Yes it would play the older DVD disks, but I for one would be PISSED at the thought of not being able to play a new release short of putting 43.25 gigs of it on my new 60 gig hard drive. An external drive is the best option because it lets people CHOSE. Especially if they are runninga falcon-chipped model and don't want ANOTHER device taking up an HDMI port. This way they can plug in the external Blu-ray drive and use the 360 as a media center of sorts. SCREW the movie downloads anyhow as the machine will play DIVX fine as well as other formats (streaming).

I also want it to be known that I own a PS3. I still however see the value of the 360. My biggest problem would be deciding to plug either my external Blu-ray drive... or my 100 Dollar external wi-fi adapter... choices choices.

i bet it due to the fact that a 60 would be cheaper & easier to come by than a special made 20gb. maybe they ended the quantity contract for 20gb, or dated contract for current supplier

Talk about opinionated! How about stating some facts. For most people, the 480p output on the Wii is FINE. Just so happens, those same people are happy with their DVD's at... you guessed it, 480p.

Just how standard is HD anything at this point? I switched to satellite, because at least there I get "90" channels (most of which are movie channels included in a promo package, like HBO.) My cable system only offered about 15 HD channels PERIOD. We all get fussed up over Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, Sony, MS, etc. WHO CARES!

The 360 and PS3 are pretty horrible at streaming video and even audio for that matter. Just try browsing thousands of songs on the GUI and feel my pain. Or, try to get up to go get a snack or take a bathroom break while streaming Divx movies. Have fun if the playback doesn't start back up, the audio is out of sync, etc. Some stuff you can't even fast forward or rewind. The consoles should stick with what got them this far: gaming. I do enjoy my HD gaming, movies, TV, etc. but by no means am I disappointed in a 480p game of Wii Bowling.

If you really want to enjoy HD gaming, limitless potential for audio and video playback, then use your PC and be done with the shenanigans.

Heh. or mabey they just relized that manufactures of HDD's forgot what a 20Gb HD was, when they didnt come out in laptops anymore in 2000.

take a 20 gig drive for lik3 5 dollars put it in a special casing, what Costs about 20 dollars and charge a Consumers 100 dollars for it.

Or charge Me 60 dollar's for a Non Hi-Def game that isnt even on hi-def media.

Its the Xbox Hardware that Mimics the High-Def experince.

your only saying that cause your stuck with 480p picture and i got a 1080p picture.....

this is not a fanboy comment its common sense both the xbox and ps2 have HD output available with the more expensive cable, here we are at another generation and the wii hasn't shown any HD capabilities... they only changed their controller....your supposed to keep the controller the same (so its easy to transition) and change the console so meet a newer higher standard.....i guess Nintendo just didn't get the memo?

    feed the fire!!

I have an xbox 360 with hdmi output and I use it with my computer monitor (hdmi to dvi). I think it is nice. In fact, I think a 20 inch monitor is perfect for playing the xbox on a 1 person game.

As for upgrading to blu-ray, I have no problem with that. If they want to enable it in newer systems or even just add an extension, that is fine. Who cares? They will not be releasing games in that format; it will merely be for movies if you want it.

As for the harddrive, I have 120gb. It is necessary to have a large harddrive because of all the games that can be added nowadays. Look at Guitar Hero or Rock Band or Halo. Many add-ons.

Gallagher knows what he's talking about. Something that's not fanboy BS. Who knows if he owns multiple consoles like others out there. Short, sweet, and to the point.

HD output? What are you referring to exactly? If your source isn't in HD, you don't get HD with better cables. More color depth yes, but not HD.

    Update: Ahh, Xploder HDTV player.

    Quote:
The HDTV Player has not been designed for DVDs, only games. However, we have found that some DVDs do work. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that any DVD will work.
I think this thing would distort the games since they aren't natively in HD(1024x768 or 1920x1080).

"look honey, it said goodswipe! oh wow, that's amazing."

A bigger HDD means people wasting even more money on downloads! Great for them ^^

Anyways, a bigger HDD is useless unless your 360 is modded or you find it necessary to waste money on downloads. The same kinda goes for the PS3 too but you can put linux on it for free and use most of the HDD for Bit Torrent like I did :D

I almost died laughing when I saw the 120GB HDD for $220! Like, Holy Crap lmao

I predict this will cost $100, which is pretty sad.

i predict all cars as of 2010 will be fueled by Tomato soup.

i also predict vinny will ignore my post on predictions.

    hehe.

    WTF? lol

Actually, more likely around $110. Do the math, and your paying $1.83 CAD per GB. Multiply that my 60, and you get $110 (not 100, oops).

Pay half and get half. Makes sense to me.

Oh and for the 20GB you pay $2.50 per GB lmao

    (+[PSP]%) = 3.52M33-4

"I get no respect, I tell ya!"

Its just sad that MS still cant make up their freakin mind after 87 different models of 360's.

Seriously... they keep changing it year after year.

Screw all the dedicated fans who camped out for hours just to buy it on launch day...they are stuck with POS consoles.

The completely new 360 model will come with an internal hand gun so you can shoot your self for buying the 360 again for the fifth time.

Learn from Sony and make the 360 with a HDD that can be replaced with what ever size HDD you want, plus HDMI, plus built in Wifi.

For Jeebus sake ppl if you diss on the PS3 for its multimedia capabilities then you are hippo-crits. "360 is better cuz its built just for gaming and thats what a console should be"

So which model of the 360 are you talking about?

Too bad MS doesnt think the same...
DXR88 (Senior Member) 26 March 2008 20:30 Send private message to this user
there are ways to upgrade the Xbox HDD without buying another One.

FATX is still the Xbox360 HDD partition however it has a new layout it's almost like Comparing ext2 to ext3.

however Risky, its cheaper than buying Another Btw the xbox360 hdd Size limit is 320Gigs. also dont go over 120Gig or your live account will get banned.

to the guy that was Complaining about the Revisions of consoles the Playstation 2 has 6 of them Xbox had 3 Xbox360 has 4 Playstation 3 has 3 and the gamecube had 3.

Also gamecubes with Ati powered by logo support Componete out and a resilution of 480P.
Playstation 2 10001 series had support for 480P Via the Componet out witch was later removed.
Xbox kept its Componet Out with a resilution of 480P.

The PS2 has around 15 versions (6+ years)
Xbox 360 already has over 10 (2+ years)

Core, premium, Elite, Halo , pro, arcade, and all the Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, Opus and Valhalla....all within 2-3 years.

    4 revisions my ass...

any who the PS2 may have alot of versions but it had nothing to do with HDD size...It was always optional to put what ever size you want (except for the slim model)

PS2 and GC and Wii all output 480p no matter what version...it all depends on the game, your TV, and if you have a component cable or not. So I dont know what you are talking about with all this and the PS2 having the component out removed???

Anyways stick to the topic...360 coming out yet again with a new model with a bigger HDD...so you can waste a crap load of money on the market place on movies that only last 24 hours...which is very similar to the HD DVD add-on and HD DVD movies that ppl wasted money on and are now useless...

I am > you at Fightnight Round 3...

This larger HDD is another way to nickel and dime the shit out of the 360 consumer base. Its a tricky system... They try to appeal to consumers by having a system that costs less than the PS3.. then charge outrageous prices for all the extra things that one would need to make it equal to a PS3 spec wise. 100 bucks for a damn wi-fi adapter??? what the hell? Not to mention the price of Xbox Live which will eventually bring a gamers costs to much more than the PS3 alone and still be full of drunken-frat types and the BS that is Halo 3.

Someone mentioned Sony trying to "nickel and dime" consumers by releasing the Dualshock 3 for 55$.... if you do the math, an Xbox 360 controller with comparable specs (rechargable battery and cable etc.) costs a MINIMUM of 60 bucks retail and still doesn't sense motion.

I like both systems, but I feel burnt on my 360 purchas.. not just because of the RROD crisis, but because of the prices on accessories and all of the things required to complete the setup. I much prefer my PS3 at this point and havn't really done much with the 360 in a while.
saltynuts (Inactive) 27 March 2008 18:33 Send private message to this user
yes i think the 360 can cost more in the long run than the ps3 but all the extra's are just that.in short if a kid wants to play games only hell you can get a 360 for what 280.00 and it will play games and sd dvds to some people that all they need i have a ps3 and dont use the wifi a still run the cable and yes i have a wireless setup in my house.to me my connection is better wired.what i'am trying to say is MS maybe made a few mistakes but by offering a larger hdd is not one of them.if i want to download a few things here and there fine.and as always if you dont like it dont buy it.its almost the same thing as when the ps3 came out at 600.00 people where all uptight over it.and i said the same thing if you dont like dont buy it.
