MySpace Music finally launches

26 September 2008 18:54 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 7 comments

MySpace Music finally launches This morning the popular social networking site MySpace launched its highly anticipated MySpace Music service, a joint venture between MySpacec and the Big 4 record labels.

Evolving from simple artists pages, the new MySpace Music allows for artist's pages to stream their entire catalogs if necessary and a few artists have already made hundreds of songs available. Prince for example, has almost his entire catalog available already.

The service makes money from advertising revenue, which surrounds all the music but will not impede listening to the song. The site will also direct you to Amazon MP3 if you want to download the track after you have streamed it.

The service will also offer artist merchandise and concert tickets at some point and will allow users to make playlists of up to 100 songs and then embed it in their profiles.

    not that it makes me feel any better about myself, quite the opposite actually;
    but the above comments indicate you might not have visited myspace recently.
    either that or your adblock-type browser plugins work better than the ones i use.

    the entire site is a huge advertisement for everything mass media,
    from tv shows and new movies all the way down to their music.

    still, a fairly surprising move by these companies nonetheless.
    they probably just got tired of having to block people uploading unavailable songs to fake profiles.

    well what is payola? and who can collect the royalties?

    Its a case of the RIAA, remember who they are, Sony, Warner, Emi and Universal, taking sides with one of the key members of the MPAA, FOX, Ala news corp, myspace ect, to yet again steal Indie music royalties, and push their talentless garbage to the world of teenagers to brainwash them into supporting their continual anti-consumer behaviour.

    MySpace Music hears the antitrust song

But scores of labels have reported they've been blocked from uploading their catalogs, even though they own the rights. A stumbling block appears to be the metadata database administered for MySpace by Audible Magic. If, as is commonplace, a major label owns territorial rights to a piece of indie music somewhere in the world, then the "ownership" is assumed to belong to the major label, not the independent. Which means that a US major pockets the royalty revenue for a British indie label.

    and if you want to stream music then you MUST pay the gatekeepers their slice of the pie or you are not allowed to let ppl even hear you because you would be in breach of a copywrite violation and sent a DMCA take down notice even if you own the rights, wrote and produced the music yourself.

    RIAA Claims Ownership of All Artist Royalties For Internet Radio

Sounds good, except that the RIAA's affiliate organization SoundExchange claims it has the right to collect royalties for any artist, no matter if they have signed with an RIAA label or not. 'SoundExchange (the RIAA) considers any digital performance of a song as falling under their compulsory license. If any artist records a song, SoundExchange has the right to collect royalties for its performance on Internet radio. Artists can offer to download their music for free, but they cannot offer their songs to Internet radio for free ... So how it works is that SoundExchange collects money through compulsory royalties from Webcasters and holds onto the money. If a label or artist wants their share of the money, they must become a member of SoundExchange and pay a fee to collect their royalties.'"
