Wii sales are stagnant, says Nintendo pres

2 November 2009 16:41 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 14 comments

Wii sales are stagnant, says Nintendo pres Confirming the news that has been bugging Nintendo investors for months, president Satoru Iwata says Wii sales are completely stagnant at this point, partially due to the lack of "must-have" games and accessories.

Nintendo's president has admitted that sales of the Wii console have stalled, in part due to a lack of must-have software.

Recently quarterly earnings showed sales had fallen 40 percent year-on-year, from 10 million in the first six months of 2008 to 5.75 million in 2009.

"Wii has stalled,"
Iwata adds. "We were unable to continually release strong software, and let the nice mood cool. We were unable to show a new game to become 'the next thing.' In the game market, once you’ve lost the momentum, it takes time to recover."

"With the price drop, sales returned to a certain level, but they just did not reach the level of last year around this time. We decided that it would be difficult to sell enough to recover from the poor performance of the first half of the year."

    New console or GTFO.

I modded the Wii, so it plays copied games, and I still haven't touched it in like a year or so.

There is a reason its stagnant already its sold 3 or 4 times as many bloody units. Its saturated the market. Why not sell a Blu ray upgraded one with the sensor bar installed into the wii for location(this would mean new wireless controllers) and millions more in profit.

Why do that Zippy When you can add a Camera And a Invisamote call it new and sell 10x more.

I needed some good news today...Nintendo doing poorly qualifies!

"Why not sell a Blu ray upgraded one..."
-They can't...it is just a toy, completely incapable of HD video in any form. They might as well sell a bluray addon for the N64.

They might as well try to bring back the powerglove...at least that wouldn't require a complete system redesign.

Not only that... is really unbelievable that you still need to pay "new release" prices for games that have been on the market for months, even years!

Pay $49.99 for a brand new Mario Galaxy?? I dont thinks so... that's why the pre-owned market is still growing...

I'm baffled. How long exactly were they expecting to ride this wave? I was hoping that the Wii was an ingenious marketing ploy that would fund the next-gen Nintendo system. Sort of like a trojan. 3 years of hand-over-fist profits.....3 years to plan for emergence into the expanding HD market....3 years to study how MS and Sony fare in laying the foundation for next-gen gaming and building upon it. I severely overestimated them. If I were an investor, I'd sell and invest in Tickle-me-Elmo stock.

I can't believe that they admit that after 3 years, they were still trying to squeeze juice from a rock.

The powerglove was fun if not poorly supported.

At the very least if they want to sell a few million more add a BR drive and some upscaling outputs.

IMHO, Wii sales have stagnated in part because the amount of discretionary household income has decreased.

For people worried about keeping roofs over their heads and food on the table, a $200.00 game console is the least of their concerns.

My elderly parents are moving in with me (health, not financial reasons). there goes the Wii that i would have purchased for them.

If this was the case, PS3 sales would not be going up.

Of course they're stagnant. Everyone who wanted one has it already. also, the "novelty" of saying you have one has long worn off. Need more proof, I would have to say 50-70% don't own more than 5 games for it.

Ya but 5 games is as good as it gets for any system then the rest of the tiles are not worth money :P

One word Goldeneye! There talkin bout new games well why not bring back an updated version of goldeneye people like me would buy the console just for that one game.I know the problems sourounding Rare,Activision,Nintendo but put profit aside & do something right for a change give the customers what they want the problem lies with nintendo nobody else.Goldeneye would sell lots n lots n lots n keep nintendo on top.But it'll never happen because of profit & pride.

That wouldn't be "a new game to become the next thing." I don't think many people would buy a system for a last-gen N64 port FPS. Maybe I'm wrong?

It is the next thing well for wii it would be.I play all my next gen on pc but even playing cod 4 online doesen't even come close to playing 4 player goldeneye in my view it'll remain next gen for years to come beating even next gen fps out there.I think rlsing goldeneye would be an awesome move for the wii an updated rare version but activision won't allow it.
