Sony PS3 getting Blu-ray 3D support September 21st

Meh I don't need it, 3D really doesn't interest me.

Even if I wanted 3D, Sony blocks support for both of my 3D screens because they do not support 1080P 3D (not that the PS3 supports this for either games or movies).

Another useless feature.

Still no word on exactly HOW GOOD/CAPABLE the PS3's version of 3D will be? Remember, the PS3 runs off of HDMI 1.3. All of the other 3D players require HDMI 1.4. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the reason for HDMI 1.4 because full 3D requires more bandwidth/capability of some kind? So I'm assuming the PS3 will offer some form of watered-down 3D? We probably won't know until the update hits, otherwise it would harpoon PS3 sales, and Sony knows this. You can bet an HDMI 1.4 version of the PS3 is on the way, but Sony doesn't want to talk about that because, again, it would harpoon current sales.

Well, you still need a 3D TV right? So, it doesn't really matter for me since I don't have one yet.

Personally I don't want a 3DTV until they make the same versions as the in-screen DS. Also I don't want to dish out between 5k-20k on them either. It's fucking ridiculous the $ on tv's, even OLED that are non-3D are still insanely priced out when it seems TVs get new models every 3 months.

I wish we could take it back to the old days where you could make a TV that was high quality, 3D or no, but was build to last for 10-20 years without issue, and then charge high $ for it, for at least than you can keep the value of it for a long time. But no, corporations much like with fridges and stoves, were not seeing a quick enough turn around so got the go ahead to make it shittier quality for fear they would go out of business, rather than relying on the consumers that can afford to get the next best model as it comes out.

Mysttic, I agree. It seems like everything is "built to break" these days. The newer mainstream blu-ray players are as cheap looking as the lowest-level Wally World Chinese DVD players of a few years ago. I'm not exaggerating, either. They weigh next to nothing, and will probably last under 2 years.

We bought a Fisher-price baby swing for my daughter and it's soooo cheap. Was worried about problems mentioned online, and we had the same issues... parts break or quit working through basic use after just a few months. Companies don't want people using something then selling it to another family. The just want to pump-out breakable crap at twice the price.

Yep, they stopped making things that last :( Better yet, they eventually will stop releasing firmware updates, which forcing you to buy the hardware again for higher profit margins... It already happened in the DSLR cameras.

Here is your correction:
The PS3 supports HDMI 1.4. HDMI 1.3 (what almost every TV over a year old has) is capable of 3D at 720P. HDMI 1.4 allows for 3D at 1080P. Now, the PS3 has no 1080P 3D support at all...the video chip simply can't do it...so the maximum resolution of PS3 3D is 720P...and thus, there is no need for HDMI 1.4 whatsoever; there is no way that it could benefit anyone under any circumstances.

Many HDMI 1.3 screens are 3D capable even if they were not sold as "3D TV"...as the only difference between a 3D TV and a regular TV is refresh rates. This is why I have two 3D capable monitors in spite of the fact that I just purchased them because they were high quality 2D displays.

Here is the kicker...Sony makes 3D TVs, so they have come up with an "interesting" sales tool on the PS3. They have blocked 3D for HDMI 1.3 devices (remember, this is all the PS3 needs for any TV). This is an obvious attempt to force people to buy new TVs...and they hope that some of those people will buy the overpriced units made by sony. Me? IF I were willing to replace a 3D screen with another 3D screen just for the whims of the Sony marketing department, Sony would be the last brand I would buy.

so..... does it get h.264 Level 5.1 support? That's required for 720p in 3D right?

I loved my PS3. It was, and still is, the best CD player I've ever had. The upscaled sound was absolutely phenominal. I sold it, though, because I just didn't game. Bought a stand-alone that's cheaper (and plays more video files I use). As great at the PS3 is, I found myself annoyed by the little copyright controls Sony built into the machine. Still might get another one some day, if the price is right. I miss the sound I got from it -- people can talk about no difference between upscaled sound or not until they are blue in the face, but I sure thought it made my .mp3 files sound better through my Marantz/Paradigm system.

Now, back to 3D: I'm not buying into it, either. No need. No desire. It's a gimmick that I won't get until it becomes mainstream and cheaper (and there is actually some content available). Ever look at blu ray dot com? The 3D listings are a joke. They have to list the same 3 movies 4 times with different languages releases just to make the section look like it has anything in it. Pathetic.

Hi! instead of buying a 3d tv, buy a SONY BRAVIA KDL-40EX400. with 4d glasses and a blu-ray player, you get 3d!
