I'm surprised that there wasn't more of a buzz about this sooner; I have the Nero Ultra Suite with Nero digital,HE AAC (High Efficientcy Audio Compression) and Nero MediaHome. I love this entire suite the quality of the media is superb although the Nero Digital must be played in Nero ShowTime. The HEAAC compresses to 50% of MP3 file size and is excellent quality. I only wish that there were a DVD player that could support the codec as it is really advanced enough to set a new standard for compression and quality.

Five stars baby!

This just makes the Nero products that much more desirable.

I will watch this site as of now only one of the links actually leads to a purchasable player and I have no idea what the price is in their currency. I will look for or await for something available in the states.

Just to give an idea of the video compression I just burned a backup of Van Helsing, nearly 7.8 GB of original file, and got the entire movie on 1 700 MB CD minus the menu and extras. The quality is very good and there are other options that may allow for even better compression with a custom menu. I just haven't experimented with all of the options due to the fact that I can only view the disks on my computer (for now).

I'm still experimenting with the 30-day free trial of Nero Digital, and I agree - the quality of the encodes I've been getting is simply outstanding.

Any future combination of HE-AAC audio + mpeg-4 AVC/H.264 + Blu-Ray, is going to be mind-boggling!

I saw there was something for a recode 2? I know recode is similar to shrink. Has anyone played with the new recode?

I purchased a Philips DVP642 for $64 US, shipping included for watching DivX files (and many other common video formats). Within it's limits (bitrate mainly) it works pretty well. Don't be afraid of the price. DVD players are oversized almost empty boxes. Not much to them, even the expensive ones.

P.S. My only real complaint with the Philips player is it does not like to fast forward thru long segments of DivX files.

dvp642 is the best 70 us i ever spent it plays everything!

Nero Recode 2 is virtually the only program that I use; it is super fast has excellent quality and very easy GUI. There have been only 2 disks that I have had to remove the special features from due to size constraints; other then those two I have backedup over 100 movies that Recode 2 was able to backup the disk in it's entirety. I will say that the two disks that would not fit the special features onto the backup were easily handled by DVD Shrink with AnyDVD running in the backround (no need for seperate ripping step). I still stick with Recode 2 simply for the speed and quality it takes less then an hour from start to finish!

Yes it does in fact have the same advanced or deep analysis; in fact I recall having heard that the guy who developed "shrink" is now on the ahead Nero payroll and lead the recode 2 developement you can see that it is very similar. Other then that the GUI is very simple not many choices but extremely user friendly with excellent results. I am fairly new to this so I'm sure that there are folks out there who are ...weeell over zealous when it comes to quality I am not one of them. Many consider a combination of DVD Rebuilder and CCE to be the only way to go; personally I can't tell the difference as recode 2 looks great on my TV. Anyway GreyArea quoted a site on the Nero web page that links to Nero Digital players if that is the type of file your refering to in your last post; apparently they are fairly cheap. I must reiterate that the Nero Digital Video is quite impressive I fit the "movie only" portion of Van Helsing to a single CD and the disk is roughly VCD quality. Not bad for only 631MB file size. The HEACC is absolutely superb as the file sizes are 50% of MP3 and 66% of MP3PRO.

My apologies I should have stated that I use AnyDVD with Recode 2 and that they play very well together. Although, with that said, I do run AnyDVD in Safe Mode due to an apparent conflict that I never could root cause. To the best of my observations running AnyDVD in Safe Mode causes no loss of functionality. I've not tried writing an image file with Recode 2 so that DVDD could burn it; there is an option to burn with the image recorder to the hard drive so I don't see why it wouldn't work but again I haven't actually done it.

You can't keep menus, or other interactive features.

but you can keep wonderful quality, very hard to pick the difference.

I don't think that I would say that Nero Digital is the same as Nero's Recode 2; to make a Nero Digital DVD is a seperate function within the menu as opposed to say shrinking a dvd with Recode 2. Nero Digital does in fact open in Recode 2 and therefore must have some connection but the encoder is MPG4 not MPEG2 as normal DVD video is. The disks are not playable in a stand alone player. Besides Recode 2 could never get the "movie only" portion of a disk down to 631 MB. If you keep any DivX or XviD for viewing from your PC then you really should use the free trial and see first hand.
